Marriage*26 December 1848She married William Nelson Houchens, son of Robert Houchens and Frances Jane Britt, on 26 December 1848 in Barren County, Kentucky.1,5,2,6
(Daughter) Will15 October 1872Identifying himself as Obadiah Britt Sr., probably because his nephew, Obadiah S. Britt, resided nearby, Elizabeth's father prepared his will dated 15 October 1872 in Barren County, Kentucky. He named his only surviving son, Nelson Britt, his three surviving daughters, Sally Britt, Elizabeth (Britt) Houchens and Jane (Britt) Bewley, a grandson, John W. Woodcock, who was the son of his deceased daughter Ann Eliza (Britt) Woodcock, and a granddaughter, Artelia Britt, a daughter of his deceased son John Britt. Obadiah also mentioned his wife, Jane L. (Powell) Britt, although he did not name her, and mentioned Louisa (Harrison) Carver, the widowed mother of his daughter-in-law, Mary T. (Carver) Britt, wife of his son Nelson. He also named two neighbors with land adjacent to his, James H. Houchens, who was his grandnephew, and John Devasher. Signing as witnesses were John T. Rogers and Obadiah's brother, John W. Britt. Regarding his land, Obadiah made several mentions of a "creek", and we note that he was referring to Peter's Creek in Barren County, Kentucky.

To his son Nelson Britt, he gave all of his tract of land "on this side of the creek" including his residence, and the bottom field on the other side of the creek next to John Devasher, to have the land on the top of the bluff. He also gave his son Nelson the interest he owned in the dower land of Mrs. Carver, reserving to his wife her dower in the same. To his daughter Sally he gave the room in his house that he then occupied, and directed that his son Nelson pay for her support out of the land during her life, and at her death to go to Nelson. To his grandson, John W. Woodcock, he gave 60 acres of the tract over the creek to be laid off next to James Houchens. To his daughters, Elizabeth Houchens and Jane Bewley, he gave them each $400 in the land over the creek, and directed that if the land should be purchased by his son, he was to have his own time in paying for it and was not to be harassed by law. To his granddaughter, Artelia Britt, he gave a cow, a bed and bed clothing. He also gave to his wife during her life, his household and kitchen furniture and, if there was a surplus of his personal property after paying his debts, and also a surplus arising from the sale of the land over the creek, said surplus was to be divided between Nelson Britt, Elizabeth Houchens, Jane Bewley and his daughter, Sally Britt. He appointed his daughter, Jane Bewley, executrix of his last will and testament, further directing that he wanted no appraisement of his property. Obadiah Britt signed and dated his will on 15 October 1872, with his brother, John W. Britt, and John T. Rogers signing as witnesses. Jane Bewley was interviewed before signing, and made her X mark.7,8,9,10
Death*20 April 1909She died on 20 April 1909 in Glasgow, Barren County, at age 772

Elizabeth Britt

Father*______ Britt
(Sister) Relationship NoteWhile we believe it certain that these three men, Obadiah Britt, John Britt and William Britt Sr., were closely related, we cannot be certain they were brothers. The primary source of our information is from correspondence of an earlier researcher, Cheyene Britt Conner Zink, with Colonel Albert S. Britt, Jr., and from copies of his 1974 manuscript, The Willaim Britt Family. Colonel Britt wrote that during the period from 1750 to the latter part of that century, these three Britt men, Obadiah, John and William, all appeared to have been contemporaries in western Goochland and Albemarle Counties, Virginia. John and William married Conolly sisters, Winifred and Hannah, respectively, and Obadiah married Ann Thomson, all in Goochland County. William died in 1787 in Goochland County and left a will naming his children. Obadiah died in Albemarle County in 1797 and also left a will naming his children. Considering the English "naming rules" and the similarity of the names among the children of Obadiah and William, we are convinced they were from the same family. Colonel Britt believed that John Britt was also a member of that family. His research indicated that John moved away from the area about the time of the revolution, and we have no will for him and don't know the names of all of his children. Of the six baptised in Goochland County between 1756 and 1768, though, the naming pattern of John's children appears to be somewhat different from the children of Obadiah and William, and the "new" names may have been common names in his wife's family. Whatever their actual relationships, Colonel Britt wrote, "It is almost an inescapable conclusion that the three men were related in some way and came from the same place. To locate the origins of one should lead to the others."

From our own research, based upon the 1759 date of her marriage, we have added Elizabeth Britt to this group of "closely related" Britts whose origins we haven't identified.1
Marriage*before 7 March 1759She married Josias Pierce about a year before 7 March 1759 in Goochland County, Virginia. They very likely married about a year before that date because, unfortunately, the marriage date reported for them in The Douglas Register is incorrect, and is actually the date of birth of the oldest of their children found in the birth and baptism section of the Register starting on page 150.2
