Spencer County, Kentucky
Spencer County was formed from Bullitt, Shelby, and Nelson counties in January 1824 as Kentucky's 77th county and later that year, in December 1824, Taylorsville was made the county seat. The county was named for Kentucky's own Captain Spier Spencer, a hero who fought and died in the Battle of Tippecanoe. In January 1865, during the American Civil War, the courthouse at Taylorsville was burned by Confederate guerrillas, but the county's records were saved.
