Fayette, Chautauqua County, New York

Fayette is the early 1800s historical name of the prominent settlement that was later named Silver Creek, and is located within the Town of Hanover in Chautauqua County, New York. Settlers established a sawmill in the area in 1804. When gristmills were later added, local pioneer Nehemiah Heaton named his mills, immediately after their completion, or as soon as they were able to grind wheat, the Fayette Mills. The village went by that name until about 1828 or 1829 when the Post Office Department in Washington D.C. refused to officially register the name because another Fayette already existed in Seneca County.
