On their shared censuses, from 1930 through 1950, they were both the same age, with an estimated year of birth as 1910, and on the 1930 census they both reported themselves to have been 17 years old when they married. Finally, we learned Martin's date of birth from his World War II draft registration information.4,1,2,5,3 
Census US 1930*4 April 1930Hazel and Martin E. Walker were enumerated on the 1930 census taken on 4 April 1930 at 1434 17th Street, Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. They were both 20 years old, were able to read and write, and had been age 17 when they married. They rented their house, which was not on a farm, for $27.50 per month, owned a radio, and Martin owned his own oil business. Their son, James A., was 2 years old. Martin's mother and brother were also enumerated with the couple in 1930. His mother, Bertha, was 47 years of age and divorced; and his brother, Melvin, was 26 years of age and worked as a cook in a restaurant. Melvin was recorded as married and reported he had been age 19 at his first marriage. His second wife of less than two years, Myrtle Funk, was enumerated with her parents, Huldah and Hiram E. Funk, in Kansas in 1930. She was recorded using her maiden name and reported as single.1 
Census US 1940*17 April 1940Hazel and Martin E. Walker were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 17 April 1940 in Wilson Township, Gentry County, Missouri. They were both 30 years of age and owned their home, which was on a farm, and valued at $150. Martin had completed his education through the first year of high school, worked as a farmer on his own farm, and had worked 60 hours the week before the census was taken. He was reported to also have other sources of income. Hazel had completed her education through the second year of high school and was not employed outside the home. They reported the family had lived in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, and not on a farm, on 1 April 1935. Three children were enumerated with their parents in 1940. James A. was 12 years old, had completed his education through the 7th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year; Robert Lee was 9 years old, had completed his education through the 4th grade of elementary school, and had also attended school within the census year; and Patricia was 2 years old. Five households away from the Walkers, on the next census page, the couple's niece, Dolores J. Walker, the 13-year-old daughter of Martin's deceased brother, Melvin J. Walker, was enumerated with her maternal grandfather, Robert Price Chapman.2,6

Also residing with the Ickes family in 1900 was Lizzie Johnson, who was age 18 and worked as a servant.1 
Divorce*between 1900 and 1910Whether or not Mary E. (Walker) Ickes and William J. Ickes were legally divorced is not known to us. We do know they separated between 1900 and 1910 and that Mary left her husband and children. William and the children relocated to Washington state before 1910, and we didn't find Mary again until about 1930 in Pennsyvania.4,5,3

Divorce*before August 1932Melvin J. Walker and Myrtle (Funk) Walker were permanently separated, and probably divorced, before August 1932 when Melvin died. No wife was included among the survivors listed in his obituary and they were recorded living separately as early as April 1930.8,9,4 
Death*25 August 1932He died of mural thrombosis caused by mitral endocarditis, with a contributory cause of malaria on 25 August 1932 at Rose Hospital, Albany, Gentry County, Missouri, at age 27. From his obituary we learned that Melvin had spent the greater part of the last year in hospitals, or at home as an invalid under his mother's care, and had recently been in an Omaha, Nebraska hospital for three weeks. He and his mother had arrived in Stanberry, Gentry County, from Omaha, a month before his death. His condition did not improve in Stanberry, so he was taken on the Wednesday afternoon before his death to Rose Hospital in Albany where he died early Thursday morning.1,10,4 
Burial*He was buried in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove, Gentry County.1 
Newspaper Item*8 September 1932 On 8 September 1932, the Stanberry, Missouri newspaper published an item issued by Bertha (Coffey) Walker and addressed to all her friends in and around Stanberry, stating that Elza Ackert Walker, father of Melvin J. Walker, did not in any way, financially or sympathetically, help during the three months' illness of his son.11
