Hannah Pond1

b. 16 March 1693/94, d. 10 June 1755
Father*John Pond2 b. c 1651
Mother*Rachel Stow2
Birth*16 March 1693/94Hannah Pond was born on 16 March 1693/94, probably in Wrentham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).2
Marriage*3 December 1718She married Joseph Fales, son of John Fales and Abigail Hawes, on 3 December 1718 in Boston. They were both identified as of Wrentham and were married by Samuel Lynde Esq., Justice of the Peace.3,4
Research Notes*The Daniel Pond source speculated that this Hannah Pond, daughter of John, was "probably" the Hannah who married Nathaniel Wight of Wrentham on 9 January 1722. Our research indicates however that it was the widow of Hannah's first cousin Robert Pond, Hannah (Bacon) Pond, who married Nathaniel Wight. Additionally, our research led us to the marriage of, probably, this Hannah Pond to Joseph Fales on 3 December 1718.2
Death*10 June 1755She died on 10 June 1755 in Wrentham5
Burial* and was buried in the Wrentham Centre Cemetery. Her gravestone remembered her year of death as 1751 at age 63.5

John Pond1

Father*"old" Pond1
Birth*John Pond was born in Groton, Suffolk County, England.1
(Brother) Immigration1630John Pond was thought to have emigrated from England, at least briefly, in 1630. The story presented by Harris in his Daniel Pond genealogy was that John Pond and an unnamed brother, sons of one of Governor Winthrop's old neighbors, came to New England in the year 1630 with the Governor. After his arrival here, Governor Winthrop wrote home to his eldest son in Groton, asking him to tell "old Pond that both his sons are well and remember their duty." The author conjectured that "John and his brother were, doubtless, men of humble birth and small means, launched forth from the paternal roof by the old sire, to seek their fortunes in the new world. No further record of John was found, and "he may have returned to England, or pushed on to a more congenial climate. But one Robert, who it is surmised was the brother, sat down at Dorchester."1

Jonathan Pond1,2

Father*Robert Pond1 d. b 27 Dec 1637
Mother*Mary __?__1,2
Birth*Jonathan Pond was probably born in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England).1,2
Will*19 November 1657Jonathan left his will as a note to his mother before he left for sea on what would be his last voyage. Jonathan's sister, Sarah Pond, and Steven Meares, aged about 18 years, who also lived with the family of Edward Shepard in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), gave depositions to the court on 19 November 1657. Steven testified that Jonathan lived in the house when he was not at sea, and that while he was in Jonathan's room, he saw Jonathan put his clothes into a chest and asked him if he would carry the chest to sea. He said that Jonathan answered no, "I will leave these with my mother, that if I com not agayne, shee may dispose of then, & do so of all that I have, onely that she out of thence first pay my debts, and I have writt my mother a note to that purpose." Steven said that Jonathan showed him the note, and he read it, and that the note presented to the court as Jonathan's will was the very same note. Sarah Pond, "neere 17 years of age", although she was probably a little older, said that she saw Jonathan Pond, her brother, write the note, deliver it to his mother and tell her that he desired her to dispose of his estate if he should not return and to tell his mother "and here is a note to that purpose."2

Robert Pond1

d. before 27 December 1637

Research Notes*Early Massachusetts research introduced us to Robert Pond, Robert Pond Jr. and William Pond, all found in Dorchester, and Daniel Pond of Dedham. Nineteenth century researchers suspected there was a relationship between the Dorchester Ponds and Daniel of Dedham, and were disappointed in their unsuccessful attempts, over many years, to find the desired documents to prove their hypothesis. Our work continues under the belief that their theory was probably correct, although we also continue to look for documentation to either prove or disprove that premise.

Robert Pond emigrated from England with his wife and young family and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England). He died there in 1637. His widow Mary married Edward Shepard of Cambridge. Robert and Mary Pond had a daughter Mary who was eleven years old at the time that her mother joined the church at Cambridge, and who later married John Blackman. There is evidence also that the widow Pond took at least two other children with her to Cambridge, Jonathan and Sarah. Edward Doubleday Harris in his 1873 Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond stated his belief that Robert Pond of Milton was also a son of Robert and Mary of Dorchester. Robert Jr. was made a freeman in 1642, married Mary Ball and died between 1600 and 1663. Their children were Mary, Martha, and probably the Sarah who married Desire Clap. William Pond was also supposed to have been a son of the first Robert Pond. William married Mary Dyer, had several children and remained in Dorchester. His daughter Thankful married Philip Withington.

James Savage, in his Genealogical Dictionary, published 1860-1862, suggested that Daniel Pond was perhaps also a son of Robert Pond, and a brother of Robert Pond and William Pond. Harris in his Daniel Pond work strongly supported this belief. He reminded his readers of the custom of our English ancestors to retain and pass down from father to son the family given names. Daniel Pond had several sons and Harris wrote that "if Savage's supposition is not correct, there is certainly a singular coincidence in the names which he bestowed upon them, for we find a Robert, a William, and a John. Another circumstance favoring the idea of a connection between the Dorchester and the Dedham men is that of Daniel's marriage." As presented earlier, after the death of Robert Pond of Dorchester, his widow Mary Pond, likely the mother of our Daniel Pond of Dedham, married Edward Shepard of Cambridge, a widower. Then Daniel married, as his first wife, Abigail Shepard, daughter of that same Edward Shepard by his first marriage. Although no positive evidence regarding Daniel's parentage has been found, there is a probability that he was the son of Robert Pond and a descendant of the Groton family.2,3
Birth*Robert Pond was thought to have probably been born in Groton, Suffolk County, England.4
Marriage*He married Mary __?__ in England.1
Immigration*1630Mary and Robert Pond were thought to have emigrated from England with their children in 1630. They settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England). But one Robert, who it is surmised was the brother, sat down at Dorchester."2
Residence*Mary and Robert Pond settled with their children in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England).2
Death*before 27 December 1637He died at Dorchester before 27 December 1637 when the inventory of his estate was taken.1,4
Inventory*27 December 1637According to the inventory, the total value of his estate was £165. 5s.5

Will*19 November 1657Sarah gave a deposition to the court on 19 November 1657 regarding the note to their mother her brother Jonathan left as his will before he left for sea on what would be his last voyage. Steven Meares, aged about 18 years, who also lived with the family of Edward Shepard in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), gave his deposition on the same date.

(Dorchester Son) Research NotesEarly Massachusetts research introduced us to Robert Pond, Robert Pond Jr. and William Pond, all found in Dorchester, and Daniel Pond of Dedham.

Although no positive evidence regarding Daniel's parentage has been found, there is a probability that he was the son of Robert Pond and a descendant of the Groton family.1,2
