John was 36 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $700 and a personal estate valued at $226, and Catharine was 39 years of age and keeping house. Catharine was able to both read and write, and John was able to read, although not to write. Seven children were enumerated with them in 1870. Alfred N. and David were ages 13 and 12 years, respectively, and had both attended school within the census year; Thomas, John E., Jacob M. and Wison S. were ages 9, 7, 4 and 3 years, respectively; and the baby, William G., had been born in October and was seven months old.1 
(Husband) DeathJohn became a widower with seven children when Catharine (Thrash) Watson died at about age 40.1,4

(Grantee) Deed Memorial25 March 1831A memorial of an indenture of lease dated 25 March 1831 was made between John Hinds of Waterloo Lodge in the county of Meath, Esq. and Sarah Atkinson, otherwise Atkinson, widow, of the first part and James Watt of North Cumberland Street in the city of Dublin, Esq. of the other part.

Whereby the said John Hinds and Sarah Hinds, for the consideration therein mentioned, did devise, grant and set unto the said James Watt all that the lot of ground with the dwelling house or cottage built thereon called "Elin" and the out houses and gardens behind the same part of the land of Monkstown, in the parish of Monkstown and county of Dublin, situate on the south side of the road leading from Dublin to Monkstown containing in breadth in front to said road 60 feet and one-half or thereabouts, in breadth in the rear 60 feet or thereabouts, in depth from front to rear on the east side 204 feet or thereabouts, and in depth from front to rear on the west side 200 feet or thereabouts to be the said level measurements, more or less. Which said devised premises are bounded on the north by the High road, on the south by the passage therein after mentioned and a field in the possession of Joshua Mason Chaytor, on the east by the holding of Rose Cross and under tenants, and on the west by Prestige Cottage and garden and the garden of the said Joshua Mason Chaytor together with that strip of ground containing 3 feet in breadth running from behind the said garden to behind the said cottage called Elin along the east side of the said field belonging to the said Joshua Mason Chaytor, containing in length 168 feet 10 inches thereabouts and communicating with the stream of water which runs along the south side of said field and divides the same from the land belonging to John Hall Esq. and Richard Clarke Esq. and which said strip of ground is bounded as follows.
