Census US 1860*17 July 1860Sarah S. Strong was enumerated as the head of her household on the 1860 census taken on 17 July 1860 in Millcreek, Hamilton County, Ohio. She was 33 years of age and worked as a seamstress. Her three children, Anna, Taylor and William, ages 12, 11 and 8 years, respectively, were enumerated with her. They had all attended school within the census year.6 
Marriage*23 July 1876She married second, as his fourth wife, William A. Carman, son of Elijah Carman and Abigail Allen, on 23 July 1876 in Delaware County, Indiana. All of William's surviving children were adults, as were most of Sarah's. Only her youngest, Elmer Strong, who was about 12 years old, was not.7 
Census US 1880*8 June 1880Sarah and William Carman were enumerated on the 1880 census taken on 8 June 1880 in Center, Delaware County, Indiana. William was 75 years of age and worked as the keeper of a toll gate, and Sarah was 45 years of age and keeping house. William was sick with a disease known in 1880 as "gravel", which in 2026 is called kidney stones. Enumerated with the couple in 1880 was Elmer Strong, Sarah's son from a prior relationship. He was 16 years old and was usually a farm worker, although on the day the census was taken he was disabled in some way and not able to work.8 
Injury*4 May 1881 On 4 May 1881, The Muncie Morning News, Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana, reported that Sarah's husband, William A. Carman, the gate keeper on the Smithfield pike, had been assaulted and severely choked a few days before by a man by the name of Daniel Sutton, who was removing from Yorktown to Smithfield. Sutton, it appeared, had refused to pay the toll and the gate keeper closed the gate on him and would not let him pass through, which enraged Sutton. He went for the old man and choked him badly. Mr. Carman was described as about eighty years of age, not strong, and was unable to defend himself. It was reported that a warrant had been issued for the arrest of Sutton but he had not yet been apprehended.9 
Illness*3 June 1881A month after her husband's severe attack, The Muncie Morning News, on 3 June 1881, reported that William A. Carman, an old citizen of the county, was lying very low and was not expected to live.10 
(Wife) DeathJuly 1881Sarah became a widow for the second time when William Allen Carman died, probably as a result of his injuries, in June or July 1881 at age 75.10 
(Grandmother) Census US 19004 June 1900She was enumerated as Sarah S. Strong on the 1900 census taken on 4 June 1900 in the household of her granddaughter and her husband, Cora B. and Lewis E. Hickman, in Union, Delaware County, Indiana. Cora was the daughter of Zachary Taylor Strong, Sarah's son from her first marriage. Sarah was 72 years of age and was able to read, write and to speak English. She was a widow and had given birth to four children, all of whom were living.11,12 
Blindness*1901 Around 1901, while living with her granddaughter, Cora B. Hickman and her family, Sarah became blind. She was in her late 70s. Ater losing her independence and requiring more care, she moved from the home of her granddaughter, who had a young family, to the home of her son, Taylor Strong, whose children were grown.13 
Illness*1907She suffered a stroke of paralysis around 1907 which left her, at about age 83, a hopeless invalid. She'd been living for some time with the family of her granddaughter, Cora Belle (Strong) Hickman, whose children were young. After her stroke, she moved to live with her son. Taylor Strong, whose children were grown.13,12 
Death*12 December 1909She died from a stroke of apoplexy, ending eight years of a series of physical misfortunes, at age 85 on 12 December 1909 at the home of her son, Zachary Taylor Strong, in Royerton, Delaware County, Indiana,4,13

A local newspaper published the results of the court hearing under the headline, "Indian Woman Given Divorce", and the article noted that the boys' mother was one of the descendants of the old Indian families of Grant County.3 
(Brother) Census US 19102 May 1910Brothers, Clarence Sailors, Lester Saylors and Chester Saylors were enumerated as Wards on the 1910 census taken on 2 May 1910 at the Grant County Orphans Home, Center, Grant County, Indiana. Clarence was 13 years old and the twins, Lester and Chester, were age 10. They were identified as American Indian, were all able to read, write and speak English, and had all attended school within the census year.1 
(Brother) Death21 May 1916His twin, Lester Saylors, died from pulmonary tuberculosis on 21 May 1916 at the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital, Adams, Parke County, Indiana, at age 148,9 
(Brother) Burial and was buried in the Orphans Home Lot, Block 28, Lot 30, which has no gravestones, in Estates of Serenity, Marion, Grant County, Indiana.8 
Marriage*17 June 1927He married, as her first husband, Zelma Delores Miller, daughter of Jacob F. Miller and Amy E. Bocock, on 17 June 1927 in Grant County, Indiana.10,2,11 
Divorce Filing*June 1937Zelma Sailors filed for divorce from Chester in June 1937 in Grant County, Indiana. An application for temporary custody and support money was submitted and, by agreement, the temporary custody of the three (two) older children was given to Chester, and the youngest child was placed in the custody of her mother. Chester was ordered to pay to the Court Clerk $2.50 per week for support beginning July 6, 1937 and $25, on or before 140 days, for the use of Zelma to pay her attorney. We were unable to find any further report of their actual divorce until late September of 1939.12 
Divorce GrantedSeptember 1939Chester was granted a divorce from Zelma Sailors in late September 1939 in Grant County, Indiana. A local newspaper reported that the court found for Chester, the plaintiff, against Zelma, the defendant, in that the allegations of the complaint were true and that Chester was entitled to a judgement and decree of divorce. The care and custody of the couple's two daughters, Faye Sailors, age 8, and Joyce Ann Sailors, age 3, was awarded to Zelma, while we learned from the 1940 census that their sons, Robert and Donald, remained with Chester, their father. The court order of support was continued, and costs were ruled against the defendant.13 
Census US 1940*22 April 1940Chester Sailors was enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 22 April 1940 at 828½ Meridian Street, Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He was 39 years of age, Divorced, rented his home, which was not on a farm, for $8 per month, and had completed his education through the 8th grade of Elementary School. He worked as a Painter on his own account, had worked 44 weeks in 1939, reported no income from his work that year, and worked 32 hours the week before the census was taken. He reportedly had income from other sources. His two sons were enumerated with him in 1940. Robert was 10 years old and had completed his education through the 2nd grade of Elementary School, and Donald was 6 years old and had completed the 1st grade of Elementary School. Both boys had attended school within the census year, and everyone in the Sailors household had lived in Marion, although not in the same house, on April 1, 1935. Chester's former wife, Zelma Delores Miller, had remarried and was enumerated in 1940 with Chester's two daughters, Delene Faye Sailors and Joyce Ann Sailors, in the household of Zelma's parents, Amy and Jacob F. Miller, who also lived in Marion.14 
Death*23 July 1942He died from advanced, chronic, pulmonary tuberculosis on 23 July 1942 at the Irene Byron Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana, at age 40. He had been admitted to the hospital six months and twenty-four days before his death.15

Mae was 28 years of age, and had been 16 years old when she married. They rented their house for $25 a month and did not own a radio. Their son, Robert M. was enumerated with them. He was 9 years old and had attended school within the census year. Jefferson's mother, Anna Sayre, and his sister, Lolley M., were also enumerated in Mae and Jefferson's household in 1930. Anna was 61 years of age and divorced, and Lolley was 19 years old and worked for wages as a seamstress in a glove factory. Everyone in the family was able to speak English and, with the exception of Anna, all the adults were able to read and write.8

Jefferson was 44 years of age, had completed his education through the 3rd grade of elementary school, and was unable to work when the census was taken. he had previously worked as a cab driver for a taxi company on his own account. Naomi was 28 years of age, had completed her education through the 4th year of high school, and worked for wages as a grey mender in a privately owned hosiery mill. Enumerated with the couple in 1940 were Jefferson's son, Robert M. Sayre, and Naomi's daughter, Patricia I. Stephens, from their previous marriages. Robert was 19 years old, had completed his education through the 8th grade of elementary school, and was employed by the government's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp program. Patricia was 6 years old. Everyone in the family had lived in Indianapolis, although not in the same house, on Apri1 1, 1935. A lodger, Wallace Decker, was also enumerated with the family in 1940. He was 58 years of age, divorced, had completed his education through the 8th grade of elementary school, and was unable to work.11

Census US 1950*24 April 1950Jefferson Sayre was enumerated on the 1950 census taken on 24 April 1950 on East Thompson Street, Warren, Marion County, Indiana. He was 54 years of age, divorced, and working as a grinder in a privately owned steel mill. His stepdaughter, Patricia, the daughter of his divorced wife, Naomi (Albright) Stephens, was with Jefferson in 1950. She was recorded as his daughter, with his surname Sayre. Patricia was 16 years old and working as a check girl at a privately owned swimming pool. The other two members of Jefferson's household in 1950 were his son, Robert, from his first marriage, and Robert's wife, Lillian. Robert was 29 years of age and worked on his own account as a trucker of gravel and dirt, and Lillian was 25 years of age and worked as a telephone operator for a privately owned telephone company.14 
Death*1 November 1980He died on 1 November 1980 in Greenview Manor Nursing Home, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, at age 85. His death certificate reported that he was divorced and that his usual occupation had been as a foundry worker. The informant was Delores Weaver.15 
Obituary3 November 1980His obituary was published on 3 November 1980 in The Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis. It reported that he had been born in Paducah, Kentucky, and had lived in Indianapolis for 60 years. He served in the Army during World War I, was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, and was employed in production for 15 years at the Non-Ferrous Foundry, retiring in 1950. His survivors included a daughter, Patricia McKenzie, and a foster daughter, Delores Weaver, who had resided with him at his usual home address and was the informant on his death certificate.5 
Burial*He was buried in Mooresville Cemetery, Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana.3
