Edmund Sherman1

b. say 1572, d. between 29 October 1640 and May 1641
Father*Edmund Sherman2 b. s 1548
Mother*Ann Pellett2 b. s 1549
Birth*say 1572Edmund Sherman was born say 1572 in Dedham, Essex County, England.1,2
Marriage*circa 1597He married Grace Makin of Fingringhoe, County Essex, daughter of Tobias Makin and Katherine Westbrome, circa 1597 in England.3,4
Inheritance*1601 In 1601 Edmund inherited his father's lands, property and the cloth manufactory.1
Religion* Although he had sent his son John to Immanuel College in Cambridge for his religious training, Edmund was a Puritan. He felt so persecuted by the established Church of England that he and Grace left everything and fled with their children and some townsmen to New England, where he could worship according to the dictates of his conscience.1
Immigration*April 1634Grace and Edmund Sherman, with their sons John and Samuel and daughter Grace and the 21-year-old grandson of Edmund's Uncle Henry, John Sherman, may have sailed from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, in the ship Elizabeth during " the last of April 1634" for New England. Their daughter Hester and her husband Andrew Ward had immigrated with their children the previous year. Only the Sherman Genealogy source reported a name of the Sherman's ship and a date of the family's embarkation and immigration to New England. A John Sherman, age 20, is the only passenger with a Sherman surname who appears on the ship Elizabeth's April 1634 passenger list. Whether he was Edmund and Grace's son John or Edmund's cousin John, or another John Sherman altogether is not known. The Sherman Genealogy also stated, incorrectly, that because Edmund's wife was not mentioned it was therefore probable she had died at Dedham, England before 1634 and that the couple's oldest child Edmund, who was 34 years of age in 1634, had immigrated with the family. Additional research showed us that son Edmund remained in England, and his mother Grace, who was alive, immigrated. All of the passengers listed who signed an oath of allegiance in preparation for their immigration signed at Ipswich, County Suffolk , which is also the embarkation place noted in the Sherman Genealogy source.1,5,6,7,8
Residence*June 1634 In June 1634 the family arrived at Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), where their daughter Hester and her family had settled the previous year, and it was there in Watertown that Edmund and Grace's son John, "under a tree," preached his first sermon as an assistant to the pastor, Mr. George Phillips.9,1
(Father) Relocation29 May 1635Grace and Edmund Sherman were among the group of members from the church at Watertown who were dismissed on 29 May 1635 to go and form a new church in Wethersfield, New Haven Colony, Connecticut, with their son John Sherman as their first minister. Many others in their extended family also made the move.9,1,10
Death*between 29 October 1640 and May 1641He died in New Haven, New Haven Colony, Connecticut, between 29 October 1640 and May 1641, when an inventory of his estate was taken.2,1

Grace Sherman1

b. 18 June 1616, d. 14 June 1691
Father*Edmund Sherman1 b. s 1572, d. bt 29 Oct 1640 - May 1641
Mother*Grace Makin1 b. s 1578
Baptism*18 June 1616Grace Sherman was baptized on 18 June 1616 at Dedham, Essex County, England.1,2
(Daughter) ReligionAlthough Grace's father had sent her brother John to Immanuel College in Cambridge for his religious training, her father was a Puritan. He finally felt so persecuted by the established Church of England that he left everything and fled with his family and some townsmen to New England, where he could worship according to the dictates of his conscience.1
(Daughter) ImmigrationApril 1634According to the Sherman Genealogy source, Grace sailed with her parents and siblings from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, in the ship Elizabeth during " the last of April 1634" for New England. All of the passengers listed who signed an oath of allegiance in preparation for their immigration signed at Ipswich, County Suffolk , which is also the embarkation place noted in the Sherman Genealogy source.1,3,4,5,6
(Daughter) ResidenceJune 1634The family arrived at Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), in June 1634 where, "under a tree," Grace's brother John preached his first sermon as an assistant to the pastor.7,1
Marriage*say 1635She married John Livermore, son of Daniel Livermore and Elizabeth Hammond, say 1635.2
(Daughter) Relocation29 May 1635Grace and her husband John were among the group of members from the church at Watertown who were dismissed on 29 May 1635 to go and form a new church in Wethersfield, New Haven Colony, Connecticut, with Grace's brother John Sherman as their first minister. Grace's parents and many others in their extended family also made the move.7,1,8
Relocation*1640Following their minister and others from the church, Grace and John Livermore moved again in 1640 to New Haven, New Haven Colony.9
Residence*1650They returned to settle in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), in 1650.9
(Wife) Death14 April 1684Grace became a widow when John Livermore died on 14 April 1684.2
Death*14 June 1691She died on 14 June 1691 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England), at age 74.2

(Cousin) ImmigrationApril 1634According to the Sherman Genealogy source, John immigrated to New England with the family of his father's cousin Edmund Sherman, sailing from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, in the ship Elizabeth during " the last of April 1634". All of the passengers listed who signed an oath of allegiance in preparation for their immigration signed at Ipswich, County Suffolk , which is also the embarkation place noted in the Sherman Genealogy source.2,3,4,5,6
