Martha __?__

ChartsDescendants of Robert Heaton of Yorkshire, The Immigrant
Marriage*She married Thomas Heaton, son of John Heaton and Rebecca __?__.1
Census US 1800*1800Martha was likely enumerated on the census taken in 1800 in the household of her husband Thomas Heaton in Somerset, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of 5 people, 1 free white male aged 26 thru 44, 1 free white female aged 26 thru 44, 2 free white males aged 16 thru 25 and 1 free white female aged 10 thru 15.2
Illness*June 1807It appears that in June 1807 Thomas traveled by river to New Orleans, Louisiana, and was planning to be away for some time. He then appears to have become ill, either there or on his way home, and may have borrowed money from his uncle Jeremiah in Maryland during that time. It also appears his wife Martha joined him for part of his way home because she was later reimbursed $4.98 by his administration for "my expenses and two horses for 6 days" from 14 April 1808. Thomas arrived home very sick, probably on 14 April 1808, and borrowed money from his brother Washington for his final expenses.1
(Wife) Loan Agreement14 April 1808 On 14 April 1808, during his last sickness, Martha's husband Thomas Heaton received a loan of $15.50 from his brother Washington Heaton for the purpose of discharging his bills. Administration documents show that Washington's loan was needed immediately for $5 for a doctor and $10 for burial expenses.1
(Wife) Death14 April 1808Martha became a widow when Thomas Heaton died on 14 April 1808.1
Administration24 April 1808Martha and Duncan Campbell were appointed Administrators for her husband Thomas Heaton's estate on 24 April 1808. They paid the sum of $2.50 to Isaac Kerr, Register, for taking bond and granting Letters of Administration.1
Administration*16 May 1808Items from the inventory of the goods and chattels of the estate of Thomas Heaton late of the township of Somerset, Washington County, that were sold on 16 May 1808 reached a total of $764.15 and a list, including purchasers, items purchased and their values, was included in the administration packet. Many individuals made purchases, including Thomas' widow Martha Heaton and two of his brothers, James Heaton and Washington Heaton.

Martha purchased 1 tea kettle for $2.63, 1 watering pot for $.67, 2 chairs for $.53, 1 old tub for $.09, a cask of vinegar for $1.06, 16 acres of wheat @ $2.02 for $32.32 and 18 acres of wheat @ $2.00 for $36.00.1
Administration27 February 1809 On 27 February 1809,Martha, as administrator to her late husband's estate, paid $15.76 to Washington Heaton as payment in full for his final loan to his brother Thomas Heaton deceased.1
Marriage*before 20 April 1809She married second John Hardgrove before 20 April 1809 in Washington County. It is clear that Martha Heaton, widow of Thomas Heaton, married a man with the surname of Hardgrove as her name changed during the administration of Thomas's estate after 20 April 1809 to Martha Hardgrove late Heaton. It is not certain, however, if the given name of the man she married was John.1
Administration*20 April 1809 On 20 April 1809 Martha, as administrator for the estate of her late husband Thomas Heaton, paid his brother John Heaton $79.50 in full payment of her husband's earlier promissory note to him.1
(Widow) Administration18 December 1809 On 18 December 1809, John Hardgrove appeared in person before H. Wallace, a Justice of the Peace for Washington County, to present a list of monies he was owed from the estate of Thomas Heaton. He stated he was owed a total of $35 and itemized the amounts beginning with $6 for cash lent to Thomas on 25 June 1807 that, for verification, was in Thomas Heaton's book by entry in his own hand in his lifetime. He was owed $3 for two days grading and two days mowing and hauling in hay in 1807, $20 for cash lent to his widow Martha Heaton on 3 April 1808 for her expenses when she went after him on his return from the Territory of Orleans, and $6 paid to Jeremiah Heaton to settle an amount Jeremiah had loaned to Martha Heaton on 13 May 1808 against the estate of her deceased husband Thomas Heaton.1
Administration29 February 1812The final accounting for the estate of Thomas Heaton, dated 29 February 1812, reported a zero balance after a total amount of $1,848.62 in credits and debits. The itemized list of those who had received disbursements included two of Thomas's brothers, John Heaton and Washington Heaton, and Robert Clarke's name was listed next after Washington's. The document submitted and registered by the court in Washington County was signed by Martha Hardgrove and Duncan Campbell, administrators, and Isaac Kerr, Register.1

Martha J. __?__1,2

b. November 1861
Birth*November 1861Martha J. __?__ was born in November 1861 in Illinois.2
Marriage*1889She married, as his second wife, James H. Spence in 1889.1,2
Census US 1900*16 June 1900Martha J. and James H. Spence appeared on the 1900 census taken on 16 June 1900 at 222 South Street, Warrensburg, Johnson County. James was 74 years of age and a retired farmer. He owned his house free of mortgage. Martha was 38 years of age, had given birth to no children, and they had been married 11 years.2
(Wife) Will15 June 1912Martha's husband prepared his will on 15 June 1912 in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. He stated he was of sound mind and memory and directed that after his decease his estate shall be disposed of as follows:

He first directed that the expenses of his funeral and last sickness and all just debts shall be paid as soon as practicable.

Second, he gave and bequeathed to his beloved wife Martha J. Spence to be hers absolutely, all of his clothing, household goods, furniture, domestic tools and utensils and $500. He did not devise to her any real estate because, in lieu thereof, he had already caused his homestead, to wit Lots One and Two of J. H. Spence's Addition to the said city of Warrensburg, to be conveyed to her absolutely.

Third, he gave and devised to his beloved daughter, and only surviving child, Catherine Braden, wife of Philip Braden, of Nameoki, Madison County, Illinois, absolutely in fee simple, and as her sole and separate estate, the following real estate situate in said Johnson County, state of Missouri, to wit the north one-third of lots forty-seven (47) and forty-eight (48) in Benjamin W. Grover's Depot Addition to the said city of Warrensburg.

Fourth, he stated his only other child was his beloved son, John W. Spence, deceased, and that he had assisted him financially to procure the farm he owned and upon which he resided at the time of his death. Therefore, his will gave and devised nothing to his son's children or lineal descendants, stating his son left surviving him twelve children, and some of them have perhaps double Christian names, but in mentioning them here from memory only, he would use but one Christian name for each. Namely, John, William, Edgar, Gentry, James, Roxanna, Katie, Jewell, and Robert Spence and Laura Shadwick, Irene Shadwick and Lucy Perry (or Peary) (or Parry).

Fifth, if after all the provisions of the foregoing sections numbered One, Two and Three are carried into effect there should yet remain some of his estate, he gave and devised the same, whether real or personal, to his said daughter Catherine Braden.

Sixth, in order that the cash may be derived to carry out the provisions of said sections numbered First and Second, to defray the necessary expenses of administration, he authorized and empowered his executor (or administrator with this will annexed) to sell and convey any of his real estate, except that herein devised, at the best price he can obtain, and without first requiring any order of Court or appraisement.

Seventh, he nominated and appointed William Shockey to be the sole executor of his will.

James signed his will with his mark in the presence of witnesses, D.W. Clark and Philip S. Day.1

Marriage*She married Nathaniel Heaton, son of Nathaniel Heaton and Elizabeth Wight, in Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England).1,3,4
Research Notes*Several researchers have published reports indicating that Mary's surname may have been "Minor". Some sources have gone so far as to identify her as Marie (Mary) Minor, daughter of Thomas Minor and Grace Palmer, born on 5 May 1651 in New London, Connecticut.

Although we would love to know her actual identity, we know she was not that Mary. Marie (Mary) Minor, daughter of Thomas and Grace Minor, died on 24 Jan 1659/60 at only eight years of age.

Heaton Families: 350 Years in America" speculated, without offering any source information, that Mary may have been related to John Maynard, also spelled "Minor", her husband's mother's third husband. Again, although Mary was probably the right age to have been one of John Maynard's missing daughters, without documentation, we don't know.5,6,7,1
(Possible Mother) Relationship NoteMary may have been the daughter of Nathaniel Heaton and Mary __?__. The Heaton Families identifies Mary as the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Heaton, however neither the "English Ancestry of Nathaniel and James Heaton" article nor Roy Heaton's Family Pedigree Chart mentions a daughter named Mary. Both refer to only 6 children for the couple, not 7.1,8,4

Mary __?__1

b. circa 1709, d. 30 July 1786
RelationshipGrandmother of John Bolton
ChartsDescendants of Nicholas Boulton, The Immigrant
Research Notes* Almost nothing is known about Mary's identity before she married Elisha Bolton and research is currently in progress trying to discover her maiden name and something about her early life. The Byrams in America sources, both editions, stated that the Jabez Bolton who married Bethiah Ripley in 1767 was the son of "John Bolton" and "Mary Pratt". Unfortunately, no source was cited for the statement. It is uncertain if the John Bolton referred to was supposed to be John Bolton, who was actually Jabez' uncle, or John Bolton, Jabez' older brother. Whichever was meant, both are incorrect. Jabez' father was Elisha Bolton. Jabez' mother's name was Mary, however we have no evidence, and only the clue from this one source, that suggested her surname may have been "Pratt". Just in case, though, we have begun to look in Plymouth County for potential Mary Pratt candidates. At this point, only one, Mary Pratt born in Scituate in 1708, has been identified as possible. Our plan is to research her family in hope of determining if she and Mary (__?__) Bolton were the same person.2,3
(CLUE Identity?) Baptism3 September 1710That "other" Mary Pratt was born on 23 Jul 1708 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts and was baptized on 3 September 1710 also in Scituate. She and her known Pratt family are included in this collection because she may be a clue to the identity and parentage of "our" Mary (__?__) Bolton.4,5
Birth*circa 1709Our "own" Mary, whose surname is not yet known, was born circa 1709. Her year of birth was calculated from her death information which stated that she died in the 78th year of her age.1
Marriage*She married Elisha Bolton, son of John Bolton and Sarah Chesebrough.1
(Mother) Death9 July 1762A son of Elisha and Mary Bolton died in the army and his death, although no name was given, was noted in the church records on 9 July 1762 in Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England). All of Elisha and Mary's known sons served in the French and Indian War and all but one can be found in one or more records after 1762. So, through the process of elimination, it is believed that John Bolton, their first born son, is the one whose death was recorded in the church record. The last account we have found for John was for money paid to him, under the date of 27 Nov 1760, for invalids and others belonging to Captain Dunbar's Company on the Albany road, returning home from the Westward.6,7,8,9,10
(Wife) Death26 February 1777Mary became a widow when Elisha Bolton died on 26 February 1777.1,11
Death*30 July 1786She died on 30 July 1786 in Bridgewater1
Burial* and was buried in Section D, grave number 482 of the Old Graveyard, Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts (Continental Congress). Her monument read "In memory of Mrs. Mary, the widow of Mr. Elisha Bolton ; she died July ye 30th, A.D. 1786, in ye 78th year of her age
Come young and old as you pass by,
Come view the grave wherein I lie ;
Though in my life I want like thee,
I was dispised for povertie.12,13,14
"
Research Notes*An individual named John Hooper erected the memorial gravestone in the Old Graveyard, Bridgewater, Massachusetts, for Mary Bolton who died in Bridgewater in 1786. We don't yet know Mary's maiden name, and thought that by identifying the correct John Hooper and learning more about him and his family, we might discover why he erected her gravestone and be led to more information about Mary and her life before she married Elisha Bolton. After researching several generations of Hoopers, we have selected John Hooper of Bridgewater as the most logical choice for our "gravestone candidate". He served in the French and Indian War in the same company as Mary and Elisha Bolton's son, John Bolton, and after the war he became quite wealthy and was known as "Money John Hooper". More research needs to be done, of course, because neither of these two pieces of information tells us why he erected the gravestone for Mary.12,15,16

d. before 16 May 1776
ChartsDescendants of William Bolton of Reading, The Immigrant
Marriage*William Bolton, son of William Bolton and Elizabeth White, married, as his first wife, a woman named Mary __?__ who was almost certainly not Mary Nurse. Most published sources, however, have perpetuated this erroneous information as fact. No record has yet been found for the marriage of William Bolton. A record was found for the marriage of Mary Nurse and Edward Powers on 17 Mar 1747/48 at Rutland, Massachusetts. The record for the birth of William's son William on 21 Jan 1743/44 in Reading, Massachusetts identified him as the son of William and Mary Bolton. Although the researching descendants of William and Mary would love to claim Mary Nurse as an ancestor, they are determined to set the record straight as they pursue the truth.1,2,3
(Mother) Birth5 May 1759The Boltons of Old and New England source surmised that Mary and William Bolton's son, Timothy Bolton, born on 5 May 1759 in Reading, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), may have been named for his mother's cousin, Timothy Nurse, brother of Jonathan Nurse, however it is now known that Timothy's mother, while named Mary, was not Mary Nurse.4,2,5
Relocation25 May 1773 On 25 May 1773, William sold his house and garden, with other lands in Reading, to Jeremiah Eaton, and three days later William and Mary, with their family, followed the family of their eldest son, William Bolton Jr., and relocated to Shirley, Middlesex County.4,3
Residence28 May 1773That same year, William purchased a large farm from the Honorable James Prescott.5,2,4
