Birth*June 1886Eugene G. Gaston was born in June 1886 in Iowa.1
(Son) Census US 190022 June 1900Eugene G. was enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 22 June 1900 in the household of his parents on Second Street, Cherokee, Cherokee County, Iowa. He was 13 years old and had attended school for nine months of the census year.4
(Son) Residence1907He was listed as Eugene G. Gaston, USN, rooming with his parents at 1317 Avenue J, Council Bluffs, in the Council Bluffs, Iowa, City Directory for 1907. His father and sisters, Hazel and Lulu, were also listed in the Directory, at the same address, that year.5,6,7,8
(Son) Residence1908He was listed as Eugene G. Gaston, Midshipman, boarding with his parents at 3005 W. Broadway, Council Bluffs, in the Council Bluffs, Iowa, City Directory for 1908. His father was listed in the Directory, at the same address, that year.9,10

Research Notes* Although Eugene was listed at his parents' address in the 1910 Council Bluffs City Directory, he was not enumerated in his parents' household in April of that year. In 1907 he had been listed in the Directory at his parents' address, and his occupation was recorded as USN (United States Navy); and in 1908, in the Directory, he was a Midshipman, and still listed at his parents' address. After his Directory listing in 1910, we have 20 years missing from Eugene's life and would like to know where he was, whom he was with, and what he was doing. He disappeared from our radar shortly before the 1910 census, and didn't surface again until the 1930 census when he was living with his widowed mother, and two of his brothers, in California. If anyone knows anything about Eugene's "missing years", and is willing to help us piece together his life, please let us know.1,14,13,9,6

(Daughter) Residence1907She was listed as Hazel Gaston, boarding with her parents at 1317 Avenue J, Council Bluffs, in the Council Bluffs, Iowa, City Directory for 1907. Her father, her brother, Eugene, and sister, Lulu, were also listed in the Directory, at the same address, that year.6,7,8,9

His death certificate appears hastily written and reported his place of death as 2930 Broadway, Council Bluffs, Iowa. We suspect he actually died at 3029 Broadway, Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the home of his maternal grandparents.12
(Wife) Arrest9 April 1909Hazel's husband, Vernon Olson, was arrested the morning of 9 April 1909 in Medical Lake, Spokane County, Washington, on the charge of deserting her in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The arrest was made on instructions received by wire at the Medical Lake sheriff's office from the constable's office at Council Bluffs. Olson was working as a plumber in Washington, and his sister, Pearl, and her husband, Henry J. Lubben, were employed at a summer resort at Medical Lake. Olson claimed to the officer who made the arrest that "no such charge would lie against him." He stated he left his Iowa home in April of the previous year and came west for the purpose of bettering his condition. He did not desert his wife, he claimed, but left her $50, all the money he had except what he needed for the trip, and the plan was understood by her that he would send for her as soon as he could become located in Washington.11
(Daughter) Census US 191019 April 1910She was enumerated as Hazel Olson on the 1910 census taken on 19 April 1910 in the household of her parents at 3029 W. Divorce*After remaining separated for at least two years following the death of their infant son, Hazel and Vernon were probably divorced. Vernon may have remained in Spokane without returning to Iowa at all. He married his second wife in Spokane in 1916. Hazel married her second husband about that same time.12,11,13,14,10,15
Marriage*She married second Royal C. Conger, son of Lincoln Allen Conger and Ada Adele Card.16,1
(Wife) Draft Registration12 September 1918Hazel's husband, Roy Carl Conger, completed his World War I Draft Registration Card on 12 September 1918 in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. His home address was reported as 3531 Fremont Avenue North, Minneapolis, and he was employed as a painter for the Chicago Bakery.
