In some records, an "e" was inserted between "Thorn" and the remainder, spelling the name as THORNEBOROUGH or THORNEBURGH. When speaking the name, the ending was silent, which resulted in all of the different spellings of the name sounding the same to the listener who heard Thornbro, Thornburo or Thornbra. From the mid to late 1700s, the surname began to appear in our research as THORNBURG or THORNBURGH, the spellings that are still the most common today.3 
Birth*before 1680It is believed that Edward Thornbrough was born before 1680 near Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland.4 
Religion*He was a Quaker.3 
Marriage*The name of Edward's first wife, the mother of his older children, is not known.2 
DeathEdward became a widower when his first wife died.2

Land Records*1722 In the early 1700s, Delaware was part of Pennsylvania and Wilmington was a major port of entry to America. Edward Thornbury, also listed as Edward Thornbrough, owned land in 1722 in what was called The Christiana Hundred, located in what is now New Castle County, Delaware.3 
Religion6 November 1725Edward was received on his certificate from Lurgan Monthly Meeting in Ireland to the Kennett Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on 6 November 1725.3 
Relocation*1726 Around 1726 Edward and Jean moved with their children to Warwick Township, Chester County.3 
Land Records*1729When Lancaster County was formed out of the western portion of Chester County in 1729, the family's lands became part of Lancaster County.3 
Will*13 April 1734Edward wrote his will, naming his wife Jean and each of his children, on 13 April 1734 in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He named his son George Thornborough and his cousin Thomas Thornbrough as executors6,7,1

Indian Attack*9 June 1757In a Monthly Meeting for Sufferings held at the School House in Philadelphia on 9 June 1757, the meeting was informed that Thomas Thornbrugh and his wife, two aged Friends lately belonging to the Monthly Meeting of Hopewell within the Compass of Chester County Quarterly Meeting, have some time ago been driven from their habitation by the incursion of the Indian enemies on the frontiers and thereby suffered very considerable loss and that they at present reside near Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.4 
Religion* Throughout the coming year, the Meeting for Sufferings was kept informed of the needs of Thomas Thornbrugh and his wife. They granted them at least £20 in relief funds.4 
(Husband) DeathThomas became a widower when Sarah (Hannah) Thornbrough pre-deceased him.4 
Will*20 July 1758In his will dated 20 July 1758 Thomas directed that the Friends of the Meeting for Sufferings in Philadelphia be paid ten pounds to be applied by such Friends in purchasing the lands of the Indians at Opequon, provided that such a thing be accomplished within three years after Thomas's decease. His real and personal estate was to be sold in two years and the money paid to his three children, Robert, Benjamin, and Margaret, equally. The will made no mention of his wife or of any other children.4 
Death*1758He died in 1758 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.4 
Land Records*The Friends in Philadelphia and vicinity had been concerned for many years that the Quaker settlers at Hopewell, Frederick County, Virginia, had not purchased their lands from the Indians before moving to Virginia. The settlers had made the excuse that the Indians had mostly moved away and there were none left with which to bargain. The minutes for the Meeting for Sufferings indicate that shortly after Thomas Thornbrough's death, a committee from the Meeting for Sufferings traveled to Virginia and attempted to reach an understanding with Hopewell Friends concerning this matter.4

Name-SpellingsSeveral variations of the spelling of the THORNBOROUGH surname have been found in our research of this family. Other spellings in early colonial times in America included THORNBURY, THORNBERRY, THORNBRUGH and Thornbrough, as well as some others. In some records, an "e" was inserted between "Thorn" and the remainder, spelling the name as THORNEBOROUGH or THORNEBURGH. When speaking the name, the ending was silent, which resulted in all of the different spellings of the name sounding the same to the listener who heard Thornbro, Thornburo or Thornbra. From the mid to late 1700s, the surname began to appear in our research as THORNBURG or THORNBURGH, the spellings that are still the most common today.3

Research Notes*In our efforts to determine the relationships of various members of the extended Thornbrugh family, we found the practices of the Society of Friends, especially regarding marriage ceremonies, helpful. We learned that the Quaker marriage ceremony was solemnized in either a public or private Meeting. According to Discipline, the gathering together of at least 12 Friends was sufficient to constitute a legal Meeting. One thus finds that document, peculiar to Quaker weddings, the marriage certificate signed by at least 12 witnesses. The signatures are usually arranged in 3 columns with the place of honor reserved for the fathers of the bride & groom at the top of the rightmost column, immediately beneath the signatures of the groom & the bride.

The witnesses signing in the right hand column of the two column certificate, in order of their signatures, were Thomas Thornbrugh, father of the groom, James Brown, father of the bride, James Brittain, John Grayham, Walter Thornbrugh and Richard Beeson. Witnesses signing in the left-hand column were Hannah Thornbrugh, Mary Wall, Ann Beeson, Charity Beeson, Sarah Wood and Elizabeth Beeson.5,6 
Relocation*1752Thomas and Abigail moved with their children in 1752 to North Carolina.7 
(Husband) Death21 April 1780Thomas became a widower when Abigail (Brown) Thornbrugh died on 21 April 1780.8

Malinda was 22, Edward was 21 and working as a laborer, Keziah was 19, Benjamin and Margaret 15, Hannah 10 and Leonard 8. With the exception of Malinda, all had attended school within the year.7
