Divorce*Charles and Ella separated, and were likely divorced. On the 1900 census, Charles was enumerated in Chicago, Illinois, and was reported to be a widower, and on the 1900 census, Ella was enumerated in Stoddard County, Missouri, and was also reported to be a widow. Their son, Robert D. Snyder, was enumerated in two locations on the 1900 census. On 5 June, he was reported to be with his paternal grandparents in Berrien County, Michigan, and on 18 June, he was reported to be with his mother in Missouri.10,16,17 
Census US 1900*2 June 1900Charley Snyder was enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 2 June 1900 at 6923 Normal Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was a boarder in the household of John W. and Ophelia Fisher who had four children between the ages of 20 and 4 years. Charley was recorded as widowed, 32 years of age, and a mason contractor. His wife, Ella L. (Reamer) Snyder, who was not deceased, was enumerated in 1900 in Duck Creek, Stoddard County, Missouri. Their son, Robert D. Snyder, was with his mother, who was also calling herself a widow. Charley was able to read, write and to speak English, and had been unemployed for nine months of the census year. Two other boarders, in addition to Charley, were enumerated in the Fisher household in 1900.10 
(Son) Research Notes9 April 1903His father, Wiliam F. Hurlbutt, was interviewed by a Buchanan, Michigan newspaper for a feature article published by The Niles Daily Star, Niles, Berrien County, Michigan, on 9 April 1903 under the headlines, "Marriage a Success" and "Views of Michigan Man Who Has Had Six Wives". (We note that Wiliam had married his seventh wife, Nellie (Daugherty) Vincent Hurlbutt, on 27 June 1901, two years before this interview.) In a light-hearted style, the article began by stating that after having escaped the shot and shell of some of the fiercest battles of the civil war, a Michigan veteran came home only to have fired at him six effectual shafts from Cupid's bow, and was at that time living with his sixth wife in Buchanan. It stated that Wiliam F. Hurlbutt is the name of the man who had, within a period of 34 years, capitulated a half dozen times to the little winged god.

Hurlbutt was then but 56 years old. He was a month less than 14 years old when he went in the Union army and was first married the year after the close of the war, in 1866. He was next married in 1870, and again in 1879, 1881 and 1902.

He was quoted as saying, "I believe in the wedded state," when spoken to concerning his record. "Children were born to me and I considered it my duty to keep them under a mother's care. None of my wives came to me as a result of a long courtship, although I met my first wife while I was at home from the war on a furlough. I do not believe in spending a long time in finding out whether I love a woman or whether she loves me; all that a man who really wants a wife who is well suited to him need do is to have a frank and serious talk before the marriage and before it is too late. Little heart to heart conferences throw a flood of light ahead.

" Have my marriages brought me happiness? An average amount, yes. I have always been a home man; I have tried to spend my evenings by my own fireside.

"Which wife did I like best? You must not expect me to answer such a question. The memory of the dead is sacred; I loved them all.

"I believe in taking the wife along wherever the husband goes; I have always found a deal of pleasure in that custom."

The journalist wrote that one odd feature of Hurlbutt's married life is that he secured four of his wives from two families, taking two sisters, one after the other in one family and repeating the experience in another.18 
(Son) Domestic Abuse2 June 1903 On 2 June 1903, a disturbing article was published in The Saginaw Courier-Herald of Saginaw, Michigan about Charles's father, Wiliam F. Hurlbutt of Buchanan, Michigan, and his many wives. Under the titles, "Abused His Wife as She Lay Dying" and "Citizens Make Charges of Gross Cruelty Against W. F. Hurlbutt of Niles", the newspaper, forwarding the story from Niles, Michigan on May 30, reported that the town of Buchanan, five miles to the west, was greatly aroused over the action of Wiliam F. Hurlbutt, a mason by trade, a so-called portable matrimonial bureau by profession, and an alleged tyrant by nature. The story reported he had been married seven times, that five of the women were dead, another was living in South Bend, Indiana while his present wife was lying at the point of death in the family home.

"Buchanan was stirred, as she rarely is, at the actions of Hurlbutt the other night." The account reported that his wife was lying on the couch, the victim of pneumonia, heart trouble, and a complication of other ailments, and that the physicians in attendance had little hope for her chances of recovery, placing them as one against a thousand. Hurlbutt came home in the evening, under the influence of liquor, and started in to abuse the poor woman saying, "Why don't you die; you are a nuisance and expense to me." He then turned his tongue on the others in the household, and the neighbors were attracted by the "racket. A miniature indignation meeting was held, the marshal was sent for and he finally succeeded in restoring quiet.

The article went on to report that Hurlbutt's varied matrimonial experiences had been the topic of household discussions in Buchanan for a long time and that, strangely enough, his wives had died with striking regularity. One, then living in South Bend, Indiana, Mary E. Phillips, she having assumed her prior married name, was credited with saying that Hurlbutt would have sent her to her grave if she had continued to live with him. Some of Hurlbutt's matrimonial alliances had been brought about through the aid of a matrimonial bureau, and he had married the woman who was then critically ill three months after the death of her predecessor.19

Hurlbutt, a mason by trade, a so-called portable matrimonial bureau by profession, and an alleged tyrant by nature; that he had been married seven times; that five of the women were dead, another was living in South Bend, while his present wife was lying at the point of death in the family home; Buchanan was stirred, as she rarely was, at the actions of Hurlbutt the other night; that his wife was lying on the couch, the victim of pneumonia, heart trouble, and a complication of other ailments; that the physicians in attendance almost despaired of her chances of recovery, placing them as one against a thousand; that Hurlbutt came home in the evening, under the influence of liquor, and started in to abuse the poor woman; that he said to her, "Why don't you die; you are a nuisance and expense to me"; that he then turned his tongue on all the household; that the neighbors were attracted by the "racket", and a miniature indignation meeting was held; that the marshal was sent for and he finally succeeded in restoring quiet; that Hurlbutt's varied matrimonial experiences had been the topic of household discussions in Buchanan for a long time; that strangely enough, his wives had died with striking regularity; that the one now living in South Bend, Mary Phillips, she having assumed her maiden name, was credited with saying that Hurlbutt would have sent her to her grave if she had continued to live with him; that some of Hurlbutt's matrimonial alliances had been brought about through the aid of a matrimonial bureau; that he married the woman who was then critically ill three months after the death of her predecessor. John was 56 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $4,000, and Hannah was also 56 years of age. Four of the couple's children were enumerated in the Snyder household in 1850. Mary was 29 years of age; Alfred was age 27 and worked as a laborer; Wilhelmina was 16 years old; and Emma was age 12. Another boy, John Snyder, age 16, was also enumerated with the family and may have possibly been a nephew.

It's unfortunate that relationships were not included on the 1850 census. We can determine that he was not a son because of his placement in the family by the census taker. The first four children were all listed in descending order by age -- until John, who was listed after 12-year-old Emma.

Whatever John's relationship in the family was, he and the other two youngest children, Wilhelmina and Emma, had all attended school within the year. Hannah's mother, Catharine Jacoby, also resided with her daughter and son-in-law in 1850. Catherine was 92 years of age.6 
(Husband) Death22 September 1854John became a widower when Hannah Catherine (Jacoby) Snyder died on 22 September 1854 at age 60.5,2 
Census US 1860*28 July 1860John Snyder was enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 28 July 1860 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was 65 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $8,000 and a personal estate valued at $300. His youngest daughter, Emma, who was 20 years old, was the only other member of his household in 1860. Enumerated in the previous household on the same census page was the family of John's daughter and son-in-law, Wilhelmina and Nathan M. Wiser, and in the next previous household before Nathan and Wilhelmina was the family of Nathan's parents.7 
(Father-in-law) Census US 187016 August 1870John was enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 16 August 1870 in the household of his daughter and son-in-law, Wilhelmina and Nathan M. Wiser, in Warrington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was 76 years of age and a retired farmer with a personal estate valued at $4,200.8 
Death*7 December 1871He died on 7 December 1871 at age 773 
Burial* and was buried with his wife in Beulah Cemetery, New Britain, Bucks County, or in Saint James Church Cemetery, Chalfont, Bucks County. Our confusion developed when we learned that Find a Grave memorials placed them in different cemeteries with matching gravestones, and The Jacoby Family reported that John, who died 17 years after Hannah Catherine, was buried in the same cemetery as his wife.3,9,5

(Biological Father) Research NotesThe birth registration for Emajean Stevens, who was born on 12 October 1935 in San Diego County, California, recorded her surname as STEVENS, and James Emery Stevens Jr. certainly raised her as his daughter. Her conception, however, probably occurred in January 1935, about a month after her mother, Vera Dowis Welcome's, marriage to Joseph A. Snyder, whom we suspect was likely Emajean's biological father.10,7

Divorce*Rose and Wiliam separated, and were likely divorced not long after being enumerated together with their young son on the 1870 census. After her divorce, Rose and her son lived with Rose's parents, Rebecca and Charles Snyder. Her son Charles, whose name had become Charles E. Snyder, remained with his maternal grandparents after his mother left their household. Rose married a second time in October of 1873, and William also married again. Although we don't know his second wife's name, or when they married, we do know she died in July of 1878.10,14

They owned their house free of mortgage, had been married for 26 years and Rose had given birth to one child, and he was living. Their grandson, Robert D. Snyder, was enumerated with them in 1900. He was 14 years old, able to read, write and to speak English, and had attended school for nine months of the census year. Robert was the son of Rose's son, Charles E. Snyder, from her first marriage.18 
(First Wife) Research Notes9 April 1903Her former husband, Wiliam F. Hurlbutt, was interviewed by a Buchanan, Michigan newspaper for a feature article published by The Niles Daily Star, Niles, Berrien County, Michigan, on 9 April 1903 under the headlines, "Marriage a Success" and "Views of Michigan Man Who Has Had Six Wives". (We note that Wiliam had married his seventh wife, Nellie (Daugherty) Vincent Hurlbutt, on 27 June 1901, two years before this interview.) In a light-hearted style, the article began by stating that after having escaped the shot and shell of some of the fiercest battles of the civil war, a Michigan veteran came home only to have fired at him six effectual shafts from Cupid's bow, and was at that time living with his sixth wife in Buchanan. It stated that Wiliam F. Hurlbutt is the name of the man who had, within a period of 34 years, capitulated a half dozen times to the little winged god.

Hurlbutt was then but 56 years old. He was a month less than 14 years old when he went in the Union army and was first married the year after the close of the war, in 1866. He was next married in 1870, and again in 1879, 1881 and 1902.

He was quoted as saying, "I believe in the wedded state," when spoken to concerning his record. "Children were born to me and I considered it my duty to keep them under a mother's care. None of my wives came to me as a result of a long courtship, although I met my first wife while I was at home from the war on a furlough. I do not believe in spending a long time in finding out whether I love a woman or whether she loves me; all that a man who really wants a wife who is well suited to him need do is to have a frank and serious talk before the marriage and before it is too late. Little heart to heart conferences throw a flood of light ahead.

" Have my marriages brought me happiness? An average amount, yes. I have always been a home man; I have tried to spend my evenings by my own fireside.

"Which wife did I like best? You must not expect me to answer such a question. The memory of the dead is sacred; I loved them all.

"I believe in taking the wife along wherever the husband goes; I have always found a deal of pleasure in that custom."

The journalist wrote that one odd feature of Hurlbutt's married life is that he secured four of his wives from two families, taking two sisters, one after the other in one family and repeating the experience in another.19 
(First Wife) Domestic Abuse2 June 1903 On 2 June 1903, a disturbing article was published in The Saginaw Courier-Herald of Saginaw, Michigan about Rose's former husband, Wiliam F. Hurlbutt of Buchanan, Michigan, and his many wives. Under the titles, "Abused His Wife as She Lay Dying" and "Citizens Make Charges of Gross Cruelty Against W. F. Hurlbutt of Niles", the newspaper, forwarding the story from Niles, Michigan on May 30, reported that the town of Buchanan, five miles to the west, was greatly aroused over the action of Wiliam F. Hurlbutt, a mason by trade, a so-called portable matrimonial bureau by profession, and an alleged tyrant by nature. The story reported he had been married seven times, that five of the women were dead, another was living in South Bend, Indiana while his present wife was lying at the point of death in the family home.

"Buchanan was stirred, as she rarely is, at the actions of Hurlbutt the other night." The account reported that his wife was lying on the couch, the victim of pneumonia, heart trouble, and a complication of other ailments, and that the physicians in attendance had little hope for her chances of recovery, placing them as one against a thousand. Hurlbutt came home in the evening, under the influence of liquor, and started in to abuse the poor woman saying, "Why don't you die; you are a nuisance and expense to me." He then turned his tongue on the others in the household, and the neighbors were attracted by the "racket. A miniature indignation meeting was held, the marshal was sent for and he finally succeeded in restoring quiet.

The article went on to report that Hurlbutt's varied matrimonial experiences had been the topic of household discussions in Buchanan for a long time and that, strangely enough, his wives had died with striking regularity. One, then living in South Bend, Indiana, Mary E. Phillips, she having assumed her prior married name, was credited with saying that Hurlbutt would have sent her to her grave if she had continued to live with him. Some of Hurlbutt's matrimonial alliances had been brought about through the aid of a matrimonial bureau, and he had married the woman who was then critically ill three months after the death of her predecessor.20

Nathan's parents, Elizabeth and Jacob Wiser, were enumerated in the next previous household which was recorded, spanning two pages, on both the same census page and the previous page, and Wilhelmina's widowed father, John Snyder, was recorded with his daughter Emma in the next household on the other side of Nathan and Wilhelmina on the same census page. So, Nathan and Wilhelmina were surrounded on all sides by their parents in 1860.10

Nathan was 36 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $6,500 and a personal estate valued at $2,000, and Wilhelmina was 35 years of age and keeping house. The couple's three surviving children were recorded with their parents in 1870. Charles was 9 years old and had attended school within the year; Emma was 5; and Walter was 2 years old. Wilhelmina's widowed father, John Snyder, was also enumerated with the Wiser family in 1870. John was 76 years of age and a retired farmer with a personal estate valued at $4,200. Isabel Knoll, who was 14 years old, also lived with the family that year and worked as a domestic servant, as did Thomas B. Weir, who was 22 years old and worked as a farm hand.12
