Harry was 47 years of age, had been age 35 when he married for the first time, and worked as a general farmer on his own account. Mary was 27 years of age and had been 16 years old when she married for the first time. They rented their farm, and were both able to read, write and to speak English. Mary's two children from her first marriage were enumerated with their mother and stepfather in 1930. Ruth and Elmer A. Lindley were ages 9 and 7 years, respectively, and both had attended school within the census year.1 
Census US 1940*18 April 1940Mary and Harry Love were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 18 April 1940 on State Roads 150 and 56, east of Prospect, Rural, French Lick, Orange County, Indiana. Harry was 58 years of age, had completed his education through the 5th grade of elementary school, and worked as a farmer on his own account. He owned his farm which was valued at $600. He had worked 52 weeks in 1939 and 48 hours the week before the census was taken. Although he had received no money from wages or salary in 1939, he had received more than $50 of income from other sources. His wife Mary was 37 years of age, had completed her education through the 8th grade of elementary school, and worked doing her own housework. Mary's son from her first marriage, Elmer A. Lindley, was enumerated with the couple in 1940. He was 17 years old, had completed his education through the 1st year of high school, was a student and had attended school within the census year. Everyone in the Love household had lived together in the same house on April 1, 1935.

In the first house above Mary and Harry on the same census page, Mary's brother and sister-in-law, Blanche and Noble Charles, were enumerated with their son. And in three houses above Noble and Blanche, Mary and Noble's mother, Rhoda Charles, was enumerated with her other daughter, Anna Runyon, and Anna's three children.7,8,9

The news article, returning to the evening of January 9, reported that Godfrey had gone into a saloon in Peoria and called for a drink. When he was unable to pay for it, he and the bartender exchanged words, and Godfrey threw his coat on the bar and left the saloon. No one witnessed what happened next, although the supposition was that Godfrey went straight to the Illinois River and plunged in. Eleven weeks later, on Sunday, March 21, his body was found floating in the river and was identified by friends.

Godfrey was twice married. His first wife, Nancy Elizabeth Masters, who was not named in the article, secured a divorce, remarried and was living in Monroe, Nebraska; his second wife, as stated above, was living in La Harpe. Godfrey had been employed on several roads as a brakeman, but could not keep a job "due to his dissipated habits." Alice, born in March 1898, was 2 years old; and Benjamin, born in February 1900, was four months old.4

Obituary His obituary, posted to his Find a Grave memorial page, tells of a well-loved man, and was transcribed for the page as: "Died - At his home [missing] Monday morning, 9 o'clock February 26th, 1900, Prof. W. H. Lovitt aged 56 years, 5 months and 19 days.

"The above announcement will be read with sorrow by hundreds who knew the gentleman and loved and respected him as a friend and neighbor. For years he has gone in and out among us, mingling with old and young, his calling, that of singing teacher, bringing him into prominence and closest friendships where he taught, and throughout Hancock and adjoining counties his name has been a household word. He conducted some of the largest musical gatherings in the land and thus brought together the best musical talent.

"The Lovitt Concert Company toured Western Illinois a few years ago and thus he has identified himself with the best people and this has no doubt made him the best known man in this section. His knowledge of his music and tact in teaching it gave him a wide acquaintance which was profitable. He was industrious, energetic, faithful to his calling and being in robust health and with a strong constitution he did not realize the effects with the exposure of long night drives after an evening's entertainment might have upon him. He met every appointment, no matter what condition the roads or weather and it was the exposure that fastened upon him the disease which brought him to his death.

"Willis H. Lovitt was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, Sept. 7th, 1843. He came to Illinois with his father, Ivan Lovitt and family, when eleven years of age. The Lovitt home near the Old Bedford church was always a retreat for the young people of the neighborhood who loved music and singing, music being a family trait. Prof. Lovitt, with his natural and acquired talent was always a leader and never happier than when in dramatic or musical work. He was liberal - too liberal - in contributing his services to church and society enterprises. He united with the congregation of Old Bedford church in 1862 and was ever faithful to his obligations. He was made a Mason in Raritan about the year 1882 and was affiliated with La Harpe lodge Aug. 6th, 1892.

"He was married to Miss Mary Harris, of Fountain Green, Jan. 28th, 1886. Four children were born to them; two dying in infancy and two, Leah and Ivan, are left to the wife and mother's care. They are provided for through the Aetna and another insurance company with a small competence, together with a home.

"Funeral services were held at the Church, in the city, Thursday at 1 o'clock, conducted by Eld. K.C. Ventress, assisted by Rev. Stewart of the Congregational church and Eld. Swartz, of Lomax. A large congregation of sympathizing friends were present, more than could gain admittance to pay their respect to the memory of a good man. The burial was under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity."1

Lovitt and family, for the past year; on the evening of January 9, Godfrey, "the unfortunate man", went into a saloon and called for a drink; being unable to pay for it a few words passed between the bartender and Godfrey, when the latter threw his coat on the bar and left the place; the supposition is that he went straight to the river and plunged in; last Sunday his body was found floating in the river and was identified by friends; he was twice married; his first wife secured a divorce, is married again, and is living in Monroe, Nebraska; his second wife, as stated above, is living here; he had been employed on several roads as brakeman, but could not hold a job owing to his dissipated habits; his evil ways dragged him down and when he did not have the price of a drink of whiskey he went to the river and drowned himself; this said history is but the old story of the dreadful power of the demon rum.
