Enoch Leonard1
b. 25 December 1707
Father* | Enoch Leonard1 d. bt 16 Sep 1757 - 19 Oct 1757
Mother* | Elizabeth Hooper1 b. 8 Jul 1689 |
Birth* | 25 December 1707 | Enoch Leonard was born on 25 December 1707 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1,2 |
Marriage* | He married Abigail Perkins of Hampton, New Hampshire, daughter of Humphrey Perkins and Martha Moulton.3
Occupation* | He was a cordwainer (shoemaker) in Bridgewater.4,5
Land Records* | 17 April 1744 | Enoch Leonard, cordwainer of Bridgewater and his wife Abigail signed a deed agreement on 17 April 1744 to sell land in Bridgewater to Silvanus Blossom, also of Bridgewater and a cordwainer, for the sum of £97. The property was described as a certain piece of land in Bridgewater's South Precinct, being about 20 acres of their homestead. It was bounded as follows: beginning at a stake and heap of stones, the southerly corner of Richard Davenport's land, from there running southerly about 75 poles to a stake and heap of stones to the highway, then running easterly about 42 poles to the corner post and a heap of stones, then running northerly about 53 poles by Seth Hayward's land to a red oak tree marked on two sides, and from there about 45 poles in a straight line to the bounds first mentioned. The deed further stated that Enoch had received the property as an "absolute estate of inheritance in fee simple" and had the full power and lawful authority to sell it. Silas Willis, William Lunt, Daniel Snell and Zachariah Whiten signed as witnesses and the deed was recorded in Plymouth County on 30 June 1744.6,4 |
(Occupation Clue) CLUE? Identity | Josiah Leonard and Enoch Leonard were first cousins and in related occupations in Bridgewater. Enoch was a shoemaker and Josiah a leather maker. As we work to identify the origins of our "Brick Wall" William Leonard, it's possible that his occupation may provide a clue. William, like Enoch, was a shoemaker in Bridgewater, and later in life in Taunton, as was his son James. Enoch and Josiah were both grandsons of John Leonard and great grandsons of Solomon Leonard, both of Bridgewater. During the same period, however, the occupations among the Taunton Leonards often dealt with iron ore, iron making, iron working and iron refining.7,8,9,5,4,10,11,12 |

(Brother) Relationship Note | For over 200 years now, researchers are still looking for clues to the relationship between Solomon Leonard of Duxbury and Bridgewater, and the three "other" known Leonard brothers, James Leonard, Henry Leonard and Philip Leonard. Mitchell's Bridgewater History speculated that Philip Leonard of Duxbury "might have been" a brother or son of Solomon Leonard of Duxbury and Bridgewater. Deane's Genealogical Memoir of the family of James Leonard of Taunton noted that the Reverend Dr. Peres Fobes, pastor of the Congregational Church in Raynham, prepared an account in the late 1700s of the Leonard family, particularly of its longevity, promotion to office and involvement with the manufacture of iron, that is in the Massachusetts Historical Collections, Volume III. Fobes wrote that James Leonard had "three" brothers; but, in his genealogical tree of the Leonard family, he reported on only two, Henry and Philip. He went on to speculate that, if there was a fourth brother in their family, perhaps he may not have immigrated to America, or if he came to New England, he may have been Solomon Leonard of Duxbury in 1637 and then of Bridgewater, or John Leonard of Springfield in 1639, or Rice Leonard of Rehoboth in 1644. Fobes stated he knew of no others of a proper age.2,3

Biographical Info* | 1652 | In 1652, brothers James Leonard and Henry Leonard settled at Taunton where they erected the first forge in Plymouth Colony. Before deciding upon Taunton, Henry was at Lynn in 1642 and James was there in 1651. They were both of Braintree in 1652, and probably earlier, before arriving in Taunton in 1652.1 |
Relocation* | Henry did not remain long at Taunton, and was of Hammersmith (Lynn) in 1655, a freeman of Lynn in 1668 and of Rowley Village in 1674. After that he went to Monmouth County, New Jersey.1,4 |

King Philip's War* | 1675 | In 1675 Isaac took part in the Narragansett Expedition during King Philip's War, and in 1733 his son Isaac Leonard of Bridgewater claimed a grant for his father's service.1 |
Land Records* | 10 May 1677 | On 10 May 1677 Samuel deeded land to his brother Isaac Leonard. Their brothers John, Jacob and Solomon were mentioned in the deed.4 |
(Father-Possible) Research Opinion | Considering all the "coincidences" which connect Bridgewater William Leonard's activities with the Bridgewater Leonards (especially if, as this researcher believes, coincidence is truly "the messenger of truth") it is suggested at this point in our research that William Leonard of Bridgewater was a descendant of Solomon Leonard of Bridgewater. Solomon's 4th son Isaac Leonard (c1650-c1717) and his wife Deliverance Ames are the strongest and sadly, through a process of elimination, the only candidates currently being considered as William's parents.7,8
Land Records* | Isaac Leonard of Bridgewater and his wife Deliverance sold land with dwelling and barn in Bridgewater to Samuel Chandler, also of Bridgewater. Their transaction was dated 29 February 1705/6, but likely should have been dated either 28 February or 01 March of that year.1
Residence* | 27 March 1717 | Isaac owned land in Mendon and Worcester and was of Bridgewater when he transferred Worcester land, his wife Deliverance consenting, on 27 March 1717. On 5 April 1717, their son Benjamin Leonard attested he saw Isaac sign the deed which was recorded on 10 December 1717.1 |
Land Transfer* | 5 April 1717 | On 5 April 1717, and acknowledged on 10 December 1717, Isaac Leonard gave his son Joseph Leonard his homestead in Bridgewater, on the condition that Isaac have lifetime use.1 |
Death* | between 10 December 1717 and 9 March 1719/20 | He died between 10 December 1717 and 9 March 1719/20 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1 |
Research Notes* | No Plymouth County probate or land records were found to connect Deliverance as their probable daughter.1 |
