Cynthia was 46 years of age, had completed her education through the 3rd grade of elementary school, and worked at home doing housework. They rented their house, which was not on a farm, for $20 per month and the family had lived in the same place, but not the same house, in 1935. The couple's four children were enumerated with them in 1940. Their daughter, Jessie was 26 years of age and had initially been recorded as married. The M was crossed out, and she was enumerated with her maiden name. As we had already learned from her former husband, Charles William Meade's, second marriage, he and Jessie were divorced. Jessie had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school. She worked as a waitress in a restaurant and had earned $12 in 1939. Her brother, Jack, was 20 years old, had completed his education through the 1st year of high school, and worked as a glove cutter in a glove factory. He had worked 26 weeks in 1939, earned $286, and worked 40 hours the week before the census was taken. His sister, Margie, was 15 years old, had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year; and Ida was 12 years old, had completed her education through the 4th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year.4 |

Aaron Benham, who may have been a relative of Eliza Benham, the future wife of Harriet's brother John H. Van Arnsdale, had been born in Ohio and was recorded as 25 years of age. The two remaining men enumerated in the Dixon household in 1860 were working as farm laborers. James Whitaker was 16 years old and James Boggs was age 18, and both had been born in Illinois.7 |
