Census US 1940*10 April 1940Cynthis and John E. Garrett were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 10 April 1940 at 1211 Alexander Street, Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. John was 47 years of age and worked as a laborer for the railroad. His income in 1939 had been $816. He had completed his education through the 2nd grade of elementary school, had worked 51 weeks in 1939 and 40 hours the week previous to the census being taken. Cynthia was 46 years of age, had completed her education through the 3rd grade of elementary school, and worked at home doing housework. They rented their house, which was not on a farm, for $20 per month and the family had lived in the same place, but not the same house, in 1935. The couple's four children were enumerated with them in 1940. Their daughter, Jessie was 26 years of age and had initially been recorded as married. The M was crossed out, and she was enumerated with her maiden name. As we had already learned from her former husband, Charles William Meade's, second marriage, he and Jessie were divorced. Jessie had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school. She worked as a waitress in a restaurant and had earned $12 in 1939. Her brother, Jack, was 20 years old, had completed his education through the 1st year of high school, and worked as a glove cutter in a glove factory. He had worked 26 weeks in 1939, earned $286, and worked 40 hours the week before the census was taken. His sister, Margie, was 15 years old, had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year; and Ida was 12 years old, had completed her education through the 4th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year.4

All of the children, with the exception of Matilda and Josephine, had attended school within the year. We'll learn later that Julia Meldrum will marry Thomas Jr. first and, after his death, marry Charles Harrington.5

(Applicant) Religion29 March 1805Zilpah Bolton and Nathaniel Everett, along with eight others which included George Briggs Cox, Peter Vallett, John Woodward, Lydia Sweetser, Sally Lovis, Mary Marnson, Ruth Thayer and Venus Sylvester, applied for membership in the Second Baptist Church, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, at a Friday evening meeting on 29 March 1805. The applicants spoke "with regard to works of grace upon their souls and after a candid and full examination, they were unanimously received into the fellowship as Candidates for baptism."2

Jeanne was 6 years old and had attended school within the census year; Gerry and Blanche were ages 4 and 3 years, respectively, Marie was one year old and Alice was 5 months. Also enumerated with the family in 1940 was Cail's father, Harry Friel, who was 49 years of age and had completed his education through the third year of High School. He was unable to work and was recorded as married, although his wife, Cail's mother, Marie, was enumerated on 17 April 1940 with the man who would become second husband, Joseph Kieffer Stouffer, in National City, San Diego County, California. Everyone in the Friel household in Philadelphia had lived in the same house in Philadelphia on 1 April 1935.2 
Marriage Separation*Jeanne and Cail separated, ending their marriage, and were possibly divorced. By the April censuses of 1950, Jeanne was living separately with the couple's six daughters, and Cail had married his second wife who was living with his mother and stepfather.9,11,12

O'Neil, whose relationship to the family has not yet been identified, had been born in New York, was 10 years old, and had attended school within the census year. Aaron Benham, who may have been a relative of Eliza Benham, the future wife of Harriet's brother John H. Van Arnsdale, had been born in Ohio and was recorded as 25 years of age. The two remaining men enumerated in the Dixon household in 1860 were working as farm laborers. James Whitaker was 16 years old and James Boggs was age 18, and both had been born in Illinois.7
