Mother* | Elizabeth __?__2 b. 1759, d. 1801 |
Birth* | 1 July 1781 | Barbara Kinder was born on 1 July 1781, probably in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The spelling of her name in the family Bible was "Barbary."1,3,4 |
Marriage* | She married first James Heaton, son of John Heaton and Rebecca __?__.5
Census US 1800* | 1800 | Barbara was likely enumerated on the census taken in 1800 in the household of her husband James Heaton in East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of 4 people, 1 free white male aged 16 thru 25, 1 free white female aged 16 thru 25, 1 free white male under 10 and 1 free white female under 10.3 |
(Wife) Occupation | 27 February 1808 | Barbara's husband made and concluded an agreement on 27 February 1808 with Valentine Kinder of East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Their agreement stated that Valentine Kinder had lent, rented or set unto James Heaton his stills and still house and all belonging thereto, flour mill and brew house, hop yard and orchard and one-third of the meadow and the field adjoining the meadow for the term of three years, and one-third of the pasture and firewood as convenient as Valentine Kinder can get it, for the sum of 700 gallons of merchandisable whiskey deliveries to Frederick town in good barrels for each and every year. And James Heaton was to return everything to Valentine Kinder in good repair at the end of the term, and he was to take good care of the orchard and not skin the trees when he plowed, and he was to plow the orchard in the summer. Both men agreed to bind themselves, their heirs, and assigns in the penal sum of $500, the party failing paying to the party standing. Valentine Kinder and James Heaton each signed their names, Kinder with an "x", and their agreement was witnessed by John and Stephen Hill.5 |
(Wife) Death | May 1810 | Barbara became a widow when James Heaton died in early May 1810 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, at about age 35. Barbara was left with five young children.5 |
Administration* | 23 May 1810 | She was appointed Administrator for her husband's estate on 23 May 1810. She paid the sum of $2.31 to Isaac Kerr, Register, for taking bond and granting Letters of Administration.5 |
Census US 1810* | 1810 | She appeared as Barbara Heaton on the census taken in 1810 in East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her household consisted of 6 people, 1 free white female aged 26 thru 44, 1 free white male under age 10, 1 free white male aged 10 thru 15, 2 free white females under age 10, 1 free white female aged 10 thru 15. Five members of the household were under 16 and Barbara was over 25.4 |
Administration* | 23 March 1811 | On 23 March 1811, Barbara Heaton, as administrator for her husband's estate, paid $288.96 to Valentine Kinder as full payment for the last year's amount on the lease agreement Valentine Kinder had made with her husband. Valentine signed a document with his "x" stating that he had been paid in full.5 |
Marriage* | 1812 | She married second Alexander Laughlin about 1812, probably in Washington County, Pennsylvania.6 |
Married Name | She was called Barbary Laughlin.7
Relocation* | 1817 | Alexander and Barbara (Kinder) Heaton Laughlin were almost certainly members of the large company of families led by Barbara's father, Valentine Kinder, from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Madison County, Illinois, in 1817. The group would also have included Barbara's Heaton sons, John Heaton and Valentine Heaton, daughters, Betsey Heaton, Rebecca Heaton and Barbara Heaton and the newest member of the family, Mary Laughlin. The party traveled by flat boat down the Ohio from Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Shawneetown, Illinois. From there, their stock was driven across the country via the New Design Settlement, and they traveled from Shawneetown by keel boat to St. Louis, and then along the Six Mile route to their chosen home called originally, Six Mile Prairie, and later, Nameoki.8,9 |
Census US 1820* | 7 August 1820 | Barbara (Kinder) Heaton Laughlin was likely enumerated on the 1820 census taken on 7 August 1820 in the household of her husband Alexander Laughlin in Greenfield, Madison County, Illinois. His household was enumerated with 2 white males under the age of 10, with son James, who was 3 in 1820, being one of them and the other possibly daughter Mary, who was 6 in 1820, enumerated as a male in error, 1 white male between the ages of 26 and 44 that we believe was Alexander, and 1 white female between the ages of 26 and 44 that we believe was Barbara. The one person engaged in agriculture would have been Alexander.10 |
(Wife) Death | 4 October 1825 | Barbary became a widow, for the second time, when Alexander Laughlin died on or about 4 October 1825 on the Ohio River below Louisville.11 |
Administration* | 12 December 1825 | Her husband's estate was opened for probate on 12 December 1825 in Madison County, Illinois. At her request, Barbara and Hiram Arthur, her brother-in-law, were appointed administrators. Barbara, Hiram, and Barbara's brothers, Jacob Kinder and Gallatin Kinder, posted bond with the court in the amount of $1,000.12,13,14 |
Inventory* | 29 December 1825 | An inventory for the estate of Alexander Laughlin, deceased, was initially begun on 8 December 1825, even before the administrators for the estate had been appointed. The Bill of Sale, listing the names of those purchasing items from the estate, was dated 29 December 1825. Both documents were signed, certified and submitted to Hiram Arthur, Administrator, and to the probate court in Madison County, Illinois, on 10 June 1826 by appraisers, Henry Hayes, Isaac Gillham Jr. and Thomas Gillham. The Bill of Sale, totaling $397.03¾, was filed by the court on 11 June 1826 and the appraisement of the estate, valued at $580.75½, was filed by the court on 19 June 1826. Almost all of the purchases from the estate listed on the Bill of Sale were made by the widow, Barbara.15,16 |
Census US 1830* | 1 June 1830 | Barbary Laughlin appeared as the head of her household in Madison County, Illinois, on the 1830 census taken as of 1 June 1830. Her household consisted of 1 male age 10 thru 14, 2 males ages 20 thru 29, 1 female age 5 thru 9, 1 female age 15 thru 19 and 1 female 40 thru 49. Barbary was a widow in 1830 and we suspect her unmarried Heaton sons, John and Valentine, ages 31 and 29 respectively in 1830, were the older males living with their mother, who was 49 years of age, in 1830. All of her Heaton daughters were married and enumerated in their husbands' households and her Laughlin daughter, Mary, had married early in 1830 and was enumerated in her husband's household. Her two other Laughlin children, James at 13 and the youngest Sarah being between the ages of 5 thru 9, along with a female household helper between the ages of 15 thru 19, we believe would have made up the remainder of her household.7 |
Death* | 9 December 1831 | She died intestate on 9 December 1831 in Madison County at age 50.17 |
Administration* | 20 December 1831 | Barbara's sons-in-law, Thomas G. Lofton and William Gillham, were appointed administrators of her estate on 20 December 1831 in Madison County. They made their sworn statement to the probate court that, in their opinion, the total value of the personal estate of which Barbara died possessed would not exceed $800 and John Gillham, Jacob Kensler and Ephraim Davidson were appointed by the judge to appraise the estate of the deceased. John Gilliam was a brother-in-law of two of Barbara's daughters, Rebecca (Hayden) Gillham and Barbara (Heaton) Gillham, Jacob Kensler was the father-in-law of Barbara's son, John Heaton, and Ephraim Davidson was the future father-in-law of Barbara's son, James Laughlin. A third son-in-law, Isaac Gillham Jr., joined Thomas G. Lofton and William Gillham in posting a bond of $1,600 with the probate court.18,19,20,21 |
Inventory* | 10 January 1832 | John Gillham, Jacob Kensler and Ephraim Davidson, acting as the probate court appointed appraisers of the estate of Barbara Laughlin, deceased, submitted their certified inventory list with appraised value of $560.75 to the probate court in Madison County on 10 January 1832. After items were sold and adjustments were made by her administrators, Thomas G. Lofton and Isaac Gillham Jr., the value of her estate had increased to $747.98½ and was submitted to the court on 4 April 1832 and filed by the court on 7 April 1832. Barbara's inventory analysis was confusing, both then and now, because the probates of Valentine Kinder and Alexander Laughlin, her father and husband, respectively, were at times being probated simultaneously with Barbara's. Her father's case had some legal issues which dragged things out. The paperwork of the three probates overlapped at times, and some documents were interchanged and misfiled by the court. Additionally, two probate packets were found for Barbara, causing her to be indexed twice. We found one folder with her surname spelled correctly and the other with it spelled "Langhlin."22,23 |
Estate Sale* | 11 January 1832 | Almost all of Barbara's estate inventory was purchased by her immediate and extended family. John Heaton, Valentine Heaton, Thomas G. Lofton, Isaac Gillham Jr., Fielding Jefferson Lewis, Gallatin Kinder, Samuel Kinder, Hiram Arthur, Thomas Gillham, Jacob Kensler, Isaac Braden, Ephraim Davidson and Margaret Letitia Davidson were among the names appearing on the list dated 11 January 1832 as those individuals having purchased items from her estate. The Bill of Sale documents were signed and certified on 3 April 1832 as just and true to the best of their knowledge and belief by Administrators William Gillham and Thomas G. Lofton and filed with the probate papers for Barbara Laughlin, deceased, lately of Madison County, Illinois.23 |
Estate Distribution* | 6 April 1833 | Final payments were made on 6 April 1833 to each of the heirs of Barbara Laughlin, deceased. Her heirs were her eight children, Betsey (Heaton) Lofton, John Heaton, Valentine Heaton, Rebecca (Hayden) Gillham, Barbara (Heaton) Gillham, Mary E. (Laughlin) Lewis, James Laughlin and Sarah Laughlin. Her two older sons, John and Valentine Heaton, received their payments directly, the shares of her four married daughters were paid to each of their husbands, and the shares of her two minor children were paid to their half-brother, Valentine Heaton, as their guardian. On 13 February 1846, Barbara's daughter Rebecca Gillham provided a written statement to the probate court stating that she was one of the several heirs of Barbara Laughlin and, that to her knowledge, the several heirs of said deceased received of the administrators of her estate the sum of $105.50 each, by themselves or through their guardians.24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31 |

Marriage* | 1801 | He married second Amelia Evans about 1801.2 |
Occupation* | 27 February 1808 | An article of agreement was made and concluded on 27 February 1808 between Valentine Kinder of East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania, of the one part and James Heaton also of East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania, of the other part. Valentine Kinder and James Heaton each signed their names, Kinder with an "x", and their agreement was witnessed by John and Stephen Hill.1 |
Administration* | 23 March 1811 | On 23 March 1811, Valentine Kinder signed a document with his "x" stating that he had received $288.96 from Barbara Heaton, administrator for the estate of James Heaton deceased, as full payment for the last year's amount on his lease agreement with the deceased.1 |
(Husband) Death | 1817 | Valentine became a widower for the second time when Amelia (Evans) Kinder died about 1817 at about age 38.2 |
(Grandfather) Relocation | 1817 | Valentine Kinder led quite a large company of families from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Madison County, Illinois, in 1817, and almost certainly his son-in-law, Alexander Laughlin, daughter, Barbara (Kinder) Heaton Laughlin, grandsons, John Heaton and Valentine Heaton, granddaughters, Betsey Heaton, Rebecca Heaton and Barbara Heaton and the newest member of the family, Mary Laughlin, were among the travelers. The party traveled by flat boat down the Ohio from Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Shawneetown, Illinois. From there, their stock was driven across the country via the New Design Settlement, and they traveled from Shawneetown by keel boat to St. Louis, and then along the Six Mile route to their chosen home called originally, Six Mile Prairie, and later, Nameoki.5,6 |
Death* | 9 November 1822 | He died intestate on 9 November 1822 at age 63.7 |
Probate* | 16 December 1822 | Probate papers reported that Valentine Kinder had while living and at the time of his death goods, chattels or credits within the state of Illinois. Probate was opened for his estate on 16 December 1822 in Madison County, Illinois, and his sons, Gallatin Kinder and Jacob Kinder, were appointed administrators of his estate. On the same date, Gallatin Kinder and Jacob Kinder and Valentine's son-in-law, Alexander Laughlin, paid a bond to the probate court in the amount of $2,000. Also on the same date, Alexander Laughlin was deposed and made his oath to the Probate Court that Valentine Kinder had departed this life on 9 November 1822 and that, to the best of his knowledge, had died intestate and that his estate would total less than $800.8,9,10 |
Inventory* | 18 December 1822 | On 18 December 1822 the inventory of the estate of Valentine Kinder was taken by Isaac Gillham Jr. and Amos Squire. The inventory, which they valued at $646.12, was approved as true and perfect by the probate court on 15 Apr 1828.11 |
Estate Sale | 26 December 1822 | Purchasers on 26 December 1822 of items from Valentine's estate included Valentine Heaton and William Gillham, husband of Barbara (Heaton) Gillham. William Gillham purchased his Bible, and Valentine Heaton, spelled "Heyton", purchased a plow. We suspect, at this point in our Brick Wall research, that Valentine and Barbara Heaton were grandchildren of Valentine Kinder.12 |
