Amelia Tyler1,2

b. 24 July 1822, d. 6 September 1873
Birth*24 July 1822Amelia Tyler was born on 24 July 1822 in New York or possibly Ohio.3,4,5,1
Name VariationAmelia may have been a shortened form of Permelia.6
Marriage*13 July 1843She married Jeremiah H. Higgins on 13 July 1843 in Jerseyville, Jersey County, Illinois.2
Census US 1850*28 October 1850Amelia and Jeremiah H. Higgins were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 28 October 1850 between Macoupin and Apple Creeks, Greene County, Illinois. Jeremiah was 31 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $300, and Amelia was 28 years of age. Their daughter Mary was one year old. Also enumerated in the Higgins household in 1860 were Joseph P. Tyler and John Duncan. Joseph P. Tyler may have been Amelia's father. He was 78 years of age, had been born in England, and his occupation was tailor. John Duncan was 22 years old and worked as a laborer.7
Census US 1860*8 August 1860Amelia and J.H. Higgins were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 8 August 1860 in Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois. Jeremiah was 42 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $1,600 and a personal estate valued at $1,000. Amelia was 38 years of age. Their three children, May, Peter and Charles, ages 11, 3 and 1, respectively, were enumerated with their parents. Also residing with the family in 1860 were Marion and Joshua Higgins. Marion was recorded as 64 years of age and born in Tennessee, and Joshua was recorded as 26 years of age and born in Illinois. We suspect that both are related in some way to Jeremiah, although have not yet made the connections.8
Census US 1870*8 July 1870Permelia and Jerry Higgins were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 8 July 1870 in Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois. Jerry was 51 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $3,000, and Permelia was 47 years of age and keeping house. The couple's four children were enumerated with them in 1870. May was recorded as 18 years old, although was actually about 21; Peter was recorded as 15; Charles as 13; and Stella as age 12. None of the children had attended school during the census year.6
Death*6 September 1873She died on 6 September 1873 at age 511
Burial* and was buried in Crabtree Cemetery, Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois.1

Mary Unites1,2

b. 1794
Birth*1794Mary Unites was born about 1794 in Pennsylvania.1
Marriage*22 June 1811She may have been the Mary who married Thomas J. Rogers on 22 June 1811 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We've taken a major leap of faith to suspect that Mary's surname was "Unites" and that the Rogers she married was "Thomas J." . Mary had a son named Thomas J. Rogers, who may have been named after his father; and, although 1811 may have been early if their first child wasn't conceived until 1823, there may have been earlier children that were deceased or adults and on their own by the 1850 census.

We realize we may have jumped to totally erroneous conclusions, and welcome any and all corrections, ideas and information.1,2
(Wife) Death1841Mary became a widow when Thomas J. Rogers died, possibly in 1841.3
Census US 1850*27 July 1850Mary Rogers was enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 27 July 1850 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was 56 years of age, and her household consisted of seven other individuals. Her son, Thomas J. Rogers, was 22 years old and a printer; her daughter, Anna Rogers, was 20 years old; and her married daughter and son-in-law, Julia and James Harrison Thomson, also resided with Mary in 1850. James was 26 years of age and a hatter, and Julia was 24 years of age. Their son, Harrison A. Thomson, was one year old. Also residing with the family in 1850 were two servants, both born in Ireland. Ann Gibbons was 18 years old and Ann Donahue was age 13.1

Gertrude A. Ussery1

b. 8 March 1902, d. 16 May 1987
Birth*8 March 1902Gertrude A. Ussery was born on 8 March 1902 in Arkansas.1,2
Name VariationShe was called Gertie.3
Marriage*21 May 1918She married, as his second wife, John B. Jordan on 21 May 1918 in Van Buren County, Arkansas.1,4,3
Census US 1920*12 January 1920Gertie and John B. Jordan were enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 12 January 1920 in Linn Creek, Van Buren County, Arkansas. John was 36 years of age and a general farmer working on his own account, and Gertie was 18 years old. They rented their farm, two of John's three children from his first marriage were enumerated with them in 1920, and the family's surname was spelled "Jaurden" by the census taker. Bessie M. was 5 years old and "Jessie S." was recorded as a son and 3 years and 10 months of age. The entry for this child is confusing to us because John's first three children were Bessie M., William S. and Jessie M. Bessie's age was correct; she would have been 5 years old. William S., not "Jessie" S., would have been almost 4 years old; and Jessie "M." would have been about two years old. It's possible the census taker recorded the two younger children in his notes when he visited the home and then later, unintentionally, merged the two children together when he completed his report at home.2
Census US 1930*2 April 1930Gertie and John B. Jordan were enumerated on the 1930 census taken on 2 April 1930 in Red River, Stone County, Arkansas. John was 47 years of age, worked as a farmer on his own account, and was an employer. Gertie was 28 years of age. John reported being age 27 at his first marriage to Clara Cash, and Gertie was recorded as age 20 at her first marriage, which was to John. They rented their farm, did not own a radio set, and five children were enumerated with them in 1930. John's two daughters from his first marriage, Bessie and Jessie, were ages 16 and 14, respectively; John and Gertie's two sons, Frank and Arthur, were ages 7 and almost 5 years. None of the children had attended school within the census year, and Bessie and Jessie could both read and write.5
Census US 1940*3 May 1940Gertie A. and John B. Jordan were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 3 May 1940 in Glaize, Jackson County, Arkansas. John was 56 years of age, worked as a laborer making railroad ties, and had completed his education through the 3rd grade of elementary school. He had worked 30 weeks in 1939 for his income of $180, had worked 28 hours the week prior to the census, and had no other sources of income. Gertie was 38 years of age, did her housework at home, and had completed her education through the 4th grade of elementary school. They rented their house for $2 per month, and in 1935 the family had lived in rural Arkansas. Their three youngest children, all boys, were enumerated with them in 1940. Frank was 17 years old, had completed his education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had not attended school within the census year. He worked as a laborer making railroad ties, had worked 16 weeks in 1939 for an income of $100, had worked 26 hours the week prior to the census, and had no other sources of income. His brother Arthur was 14 years old, had completed his education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year. Young Homer was 5 years old and had not yet attended school.6
(Wife) Death28 April 1976Gertie became a widow when John B. Jordan died on 28 April 1976 at age 91.4
