Relocation*After their marriage George Spear and his wife Elizabeth went to New Dartmouth, Cornwall County, Maine, (now in Lincoln County) and occupied the Gent property.2 
Indian Attack*21 May 1688George was still living there on 21 May 1688 when, calling himself husbandman, he sent a petition to the Governor of New England stating that his wife's first husband, John Gent, was an ancient inhabitant of New Dartmouth, owning much land, before the Indian War, and was "cast away" while his family was in Boston, that he, Spear, had married the widow, returned to New Dartmouth when it was newly settled, bringing much stock with him, and that now being "very Antient" he wished to have his two sons Samuel and Nathaniel Spear live near him and to see them settled while he was still alive, and therefore asked that they be granted one hundred and fifty acres apiece as near to the town as may be, by His Majesty's patent and at a moderate quit-rent. His hopeful plan was never achieved, for less than four months later on 5 and 6 September 1688, New Dartmouth was attacked by a strong force of Indians. Although most of the inhabitants were able to reach the safety of the garrison and eventually escaped to the westward, all of the houses and buildings were burned and the place was completely deserted for the next thirty years.2 
Death*September 1688He may have died as a result of the Indian attack on New Dartmouth in September 1688 because he was never heard of again. He would have been about 75 years of age.2

Census US 1900*13 June 1900Catherine and Philip Braden were enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 13 June 1900 in Nameoki, Madison County, Illinois. Philip was 60 years of age and a farmer, and Catherine, spelled "Katherine", was 50. The couple had been married for 29 years and Catherine had given birth to 8 children, all of whom were living. Five of their children, all unmarried, resided in their parents' household in 1900. Katherine was 21, Martha was 18, Chester 16, Emma 12 and Joseph 10. The three younger children had all attended school for 9 months within the census year. John Morgan, a 45-year-old farm laborer, also resided in the Spence household in 1900 as a boarder.8 
(Daughter) Will15 June 1912Catherine's father prepared his will on 15 June 1912 in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. He stated he was of sound mind and memory and directed that after his decease his estate shall be disposed of as follows:

He first directed that the expenses of his funeral and last sickness and all just debts shall be paid as soon as practicable.

Second, he gave and bequeathed to his beloved wife Martha J. Spence to be hers absolutely, all of his clothing, household goods, furniture, domestic tools and utensils and $500. He did not devise to her any real estate because, in lieu thereof, he had already caused his homestead, to wit Lots One and Two of J. H. Spence's Addition to the said city of Warrensburg, to be conveyed to her absolutely.

Third, he gave and devised to his beloved daughter, and only surviving child, Catherine Braden, wife of Philip Braden, of Nameoki, Madison County, Illinois, absolutely in fee simple, and as her sole and separate estate, the following real estate situate in said Johnson County, state of Missouri, to wit the north one-third of lots forty-seven (47) and forty-eight (48) in Benjamin W. Grover's Depot Addition to the said city of Warrensburg.

Fourth, he stated his only other child was his beloved son, John W. Spence, deceased, and that he had assisted him financially to procure the farm he owned and upon which he resided at the time of his death. Therefore, his will gave and devised nothing to his son's children or lineal descendants, stating his son left surviving him twelve children, and some of them have perhaps double Christian names, but in mentioning them here from memory only, he would use but one Christian name for each. Namely, John, William, Edgar, Gentry, James, Roxanna, Katie, Jewell, and Robert Spence and Laura Shadwick, Irene Shadwick and Lucy Perry (or Peary) (or Parry).

Fifth, if after all the provisions of the foregoing sections numbered One, Two and Three are carried into effect there should yet remain some of his estate, he gave and devised the same, whether real or personal, to his said daughter Catherine Braden.

Sixth, in order that the cash may be derived to carry out the provisions of said sections numbered First and Second, to defray the necessary expenses of administration, he authorized and empowered his executor (or administrator with this will annexed) to sell and convey any of his real estate, except that herein devised, at the best price he can obtain, and without first requiring any order of Court or appraisement.

Seventh, he nominated and appointed William Shockey to be the sole executor of his will.

Census US 1850*22 October 1850Rocceana and James H. Spence were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 22 October 1850 in Township 3 N R 9 W, Madison County, Illinois. James was 26 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $500, and "Roxceanna" was 38. Five of the Heaton children from their mother's first marriage resided in the household of their stepfather in 1850. Valentine was 18, Emaline 15, Jacob 13, James 10, and Matilda 9. Catherine Spence, daughter of James and Rocceana, was age 1. All of the children except Catherine had attended school within the year. In 1850, Rocceana's eldest daughter, Henrietta Heaton, age 16, was enumerated as a student in a seminary school for girls in Madison County, Illinois.7 
Census US 1860*28 July 1860Rocceana and James H. Spence were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 28 July 1860 in Township 3 Range 9, Venice post office, Madison County, Illinois. Their surname was transcribed as "Spiece". James was 35 years of age, and a farmer with real estate valued at $2,800 and a personal estate valued at $1,000. "Roxiana" was keeping house and her age was recorded as 28, 10 years less than had been recorded 10 years earlier. She was likely about 48 in 1860. Three of Rocceana's children from her marriage with John Heaton resided with her in the Spence household. Emeline was 21 and keeping house with her mother, James was 20 and a laborer, and Matilda was 18 and also keeping house. Two children of James and Rocceana Spence also resided with their parents. Catherine was 11 and John was 9. All five of the children had attended school within the year. Adam Gates, age 60 and born in France, also resided with the family in 1860 and worked as a farmhand. Lucinda Braden, whom James Heaton would marry in 1863, was enumerated in her father's household on the same census page.8

James was 45 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $10,000 and a personal estate of $800. His birth place was recorded as Missouri. Rocceana was 58 and keeping house. Two of their children resided with the couple in 1870. Catherine was 20 and John was 18 and had attended school within the year. A 22-year-old male laborer also resided in the Spence household in 1870.9 
Census US 1880*12 June 1880Rocceana and James Hamilton Spence appeared on the 1880 census taken on 11 and 12 June 1880 in Nameoki, Madison County, Illinois. James was enumerated as "Hamilton J. Spence", 54 years of age and a farmer, and Roxana was 68 years of age and keeping house. Residing with the couple in 1880 were three children. The two youngest children were identified as the couple's grandsons. Henry Deer was 8 years old and his brother Osie Deer was 6. Their mother had been born in Illinois and we believe was Roxana's daughter, Matilda Heaton. The boys' father had been born in Germany. The third and oldest child residing in the Spence household in 1880 was a 14-year-old girl named Augusta Taulmann, who was identified as "adopted". She had been born in Illinois and there was no record of where either of her parents had been born or who they were. All three of the children had attended school within the census year. Two men described as laborers also resided with the Spence family in 1880. John Koerner was 60 years of age, born in Kentucky and his relationship to the family was recorded as "servant", and Colin H. McLean was 21, born in Illinois and had no relationship to the family other than as a laborer.10

Grover's Depot Addition to the said city of Warrensburg.

Fourth, he stated his only other child was his beloved son, John W. Spence, deceased, and that he had assisted him financially to procure the farm he owned and upon which he resided at the time of his death. Therefore, his will gave and devised nothing to his son's children or lineal descendants, stating his son left surviving him twelve children, and some of them have perhaps double Christian names, but in mentioning them here from memory only, he would use but one Christian name for each. Namely, John, William, Edgar, Gentry, James, Roxanna, Katie, Jewell, and Robert Spence and Laura Shadwick, Irene Shadwick and Lucy Perry (or Peary) (or Parry).

Fifth, if after all the provisions of the foregoing sections numbered One, Two and Three are carried into effect there should yet remain some of his estate, he gave and devised the same, whether real or personal, to his said daughter Catherine Braden.

Grover's Depot Addition to the said city of Warrensburg.

Fourth, he stated his only other child was his beloved son, John W. Spence, deceased, and that he had assisted him financially to procure the farm he owned and upon which he resided at the time of his death. Therefore, his will gave and devised nothing to his son's children or lineal descendants, stating his son left surviving him twelve children, and some of them have perhaps double Christian names, but in mentioning them here from memory only, he would use but one Christian name for each. Namely, John, William, Edgar, Gentry, James, Roxanna, Katie, Jewell, and Robert Spence and Laura Shadwick, Irene Shadwick and Lucy Perry (or Peary) (or Parry).
