Research Notes*Why was Elizabeth's middle name Everett? The name "Everett" has been and remains a puzzle to us. We have not found the name anywhere in John Bolton's family. After years of research, we have still found no evidence to indicate why "Everett" was Elizabeth Everett Bolton's middle name. We don't even know yet whether she received the name at birth, or if she or someone else added it to her name for a particular reason later. We do believe that "Everett" has a special significance that needs to be identified. Elizabeth named her first daughter Elizabeth Everett and her oldest son, James Ormond Brown, named his second son Everett. Our first clue to the "Everett" name was found just recently when we learned that Elizabeth's mother, Zilpah (Peirce) Bolton and a man named Nathaniel Everett both applied for membership in the Second Baptist Church in Boston at the same Friday evening meeting and were baptized together on the same Sunday just one year before Elizabeth was born. We obviously need to learn about this Nathaniel Everett and his family in order to determine if he may possibly be our link to the Everett name and maybe even to Zilpah's family and/or to Elizabeth's life between her mother's death in Boston in 1808 and Elizabeth's marriage in Milton, Norfolk County at age 17 in 1823.3,4
(Daughter) Death1 October 1808Elizabeth was only two years old when her mother, Zilpah Bolton, died on 1 October 1808 at age 26. Her death appeared in the records of the Second Baptist Church in Boston.5,6,7
Marriage Intention20 May 1823An intention of marriage for Elizabeth E. Bolton and James O. Brown was recorded on 20 May 1823 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.8
Marriage*12 June 1823She married first James O. Brown of Boston on Thursday, 12 June 1823 at First Parish Church, Milton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. Their marriage was performed by the Reverend Samuel Gile.9,10
Census US 1830*1830Elizabeth was likely enumerated on the 1830 census in the household of her husband James O. Brown in Wrentham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. The household consisted of 6 free white persons: 1 male age 20 thru 29, who would have been the father James Sr., 1 female age 20 thru 29 who would have been the mother Elizabeth, 1 male age 5 thru 9 who would have been their 6-year-old son James Jr., 1 female under 5 who would have been their 4-year-old daughter Elizabeth, and 1 male under 5 who would have been their 2-year-old son George. There was one additional male age 15-19 who resided in the household.11
(Wife) Deathbefore 1836Elizabeth became a widow when James Ormond Brown died before 1836.
Occupation*1836Elizabeth Brown was listed as a tailoress at the corner of Planet and Well in the 1836 Rhode Island City Directory for Providence.12
Marriage*7 July 1836Elizabeth Everett (Bolton) Brown married second Samuel Shove, son of Josiah Shove and Joanna Dow, on 7 July 1836 in Trinity Episcopal Church, New York City, New York. Their marriage likely caused some concern among family and friends because she was a member of the Episcopalian Church and he was a Quaker and active member of the Society of Friends. They were married by Episcopalian Minister Henry Anthon.13,14
Relocation*between 1837 and 1840During the years between 1837 and 1840, Elizabeth's husband Samuel suffered great financial difficulties from a variety of causes, not the least of which came as a result of the severe financial losses of friends and relatives for whom he had provided endorsements. The situation swallowed up the profits of all his previous years of toil and saving and, at the age of fifty-one, with a family of five still to provide for, he gave up everything to his creditors and began the relocation of his family west, to the undeveloped lands of Illinois. He borrowed $1,000 from his first wife's brother, possibly William, for their move to Mount Hope, McLean County, Illinois, a colony of Rhode Island and Massachusetts people. They had a small farm of sixty acres on which they lived with their family for about seven years.15,2
Residence1847About the year of 1847, Elizabeth E. Shove and Samuel Shove moved to Pope Creek, Knox County, Illinois, where Samuel continued to work a small piece of land and kept a stock of goods, enjoying the variety to be found in running a country store. Their two youngest children were with them in Pope Creek, and Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth Brown, age 21, had married Lucien Conger in 1845 and lived in Galesburg. Samuel's daughter, Nancy, had died in 1844 and his daughter, Hannah, had possibly already married Gershom Redway before her family moved from Providence. The whereabouts of the four older boys, all old enough to be on their own, William Shove at age 33, Josiah Shove at 23, James Brown, also 23 and George Brown at 19, remains a mystery to this researcher. William and Josiah Shove were still living in 1874, but James and George Brown have not yet been found.15
Residence1849In 1849, Elizabeth E. Shove and Samuel Shove moved with their family from Mount Hope to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.2
Underground Railroad*circa 1850One night the Shove's young daughter, Louisa, was awakened in the night in her upstairs bedroom in their Galesburg, Illinois house. She told her grandchildren, years later, of going sleepily downstairs as a nine-year-old would, and opening the door on a room filled with people -- her parents, some neighbors and some black strangers. She was hushed back to bed. And for a long time, she did not know whether it was dream or memory. When she was older, she realized that her parents' home had been a station on the Underground Railway.

In the 1850s the Underground Railroad existed in every State from Maine to Iowa, but mainly in Ohio and Illinois. It functioned without formal organization, officers, rules or maps. It was altogether spontaneous. The slaves fled across the border, appealed for help, found it, sent back word; others found the way, and soon scores of men were helping them, how many no one knows. Galesburg was the most important station in Illinois. The galleries of its Old First Church afforded hiding places for slaves. There were houses in the village and farms on the prairie whose occupants, like the Shoves, were ready to receive fugitives at any hour of the night. Each group worked in ignorance of the size of the movement or its ramifications. All they knew were the stations nearest and the men who went to and fro. There were no records, no statistics. The less they knew the better when it came to testifying in court. Passwords were arranged between those dealing with each other. The routes were frequently changed. It was the simplest organization imaginable and in its simplicity lay its success.16,17
Census US 1850*24 September 1850Elizabeth E. Shove and Samuel Shove appeared on the 1850 census taken on 24 September 1850 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Samuel's occupation was recorded as Merchant. The household was made up of Samuel, age 63, Elizabeth, 43, son Clarence Vinton, 13, and daughter, Louisa, age 9.18
Residence13 December 1853In 1853 the family moved to Mercer County and, by Warrant, Samuel Shove purchased federal land on 13 December 1853 in Mercer County, Illinois. The land, consisting of 40 acres, was located in Section Number 32, Township 14N, Range 2W of the 4th Principal Meridian of the County of Mercer, and had the legal description SESE.2,19
Residencebetween 1854 and 1864Elizabeth E. Shove and Samuel Shove made several shorter moves after relocating from Rhode Island to Illinois in 1840 and their actual pattern of movement was described differently by their daughter, Louisa Shove Conger, who was a very young child and with them at the time, and Josiah Shove, Samuel's grown son, who was not. Samuel, on a journey he made to New England in 1853, contracted an infection of his eyes which resulted within a year or two in a total loss of sight in one eye, and such impaired vision of the remaining one, he became no longer able to continue the work of his business. He was a much-disciplined man however, with a very strong work ethic, and continued to make himself as useful as he possibly could. In 1857, following the loss of his sight, he and Elizabeth removed to Oneida, Knox County, Illinois, where they remained until Elizabeth's death in 1864.15
Census US 18608 July 1860Elizabeth E. Shove and Samuel Shove appeared on the 1850 census taken on 8 July 1860 in Oneida, Knox County, Illinois. Samuel was 71 and lived with his wife Elizabeth who was 51.20
Death*21 January 1864Elizabeth died on 21 January 1864 in Oneida, Knox County, Illinois, at age 57.2

Our research indicates that Harry's 2nd Great-Grandfather, if William Bolton, was actually the son of Elisha Bolton, Nathaniel's brother. It appears from the French & Indian War records that the young William was very close to his Uncle Nathaniel, and they may have continued their close relationship later in life as well. Nathaniel and Elisha Bolton were sons of John Bolton who was the son of the immigrant Nicholas Boulton.1,7

Birth*9 January 1721/22Hannah Bolton was born on 9 January 1721/22 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1,2,3
Married NameHer married surname in Bridgewater records was also spelled THOMPSON. At an earlier time the name was spelled TOMSON; then an h was added for THOMSON, as was the case most often in the Halifax records. THOMPSON became most common in the later 1700s.4,5,6,1
Marriage*18 March 1740She married as his first wife Peter Thompson, son of Peter Thomson and Rebecca Sturtevant, on 18 March 1740 in Halifax, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).4,1
(4th Daughter) Will27 May 1755Hannah's father wrote a will dated 27 May 1755 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, in New England, naming his five daughters his primary beneficiaries. To his well-beloved daughter Hannah, her heirs and assigns forever, he gave £40 lawful money to be paid in ware at the South Titicut Furnace next blast or the first of next May. Additionally, Hannah and her sisters Elizabeth and Martha, as joint recipients, were bequeathed all the rest of their father's land, at home or abroad, his Purchase Right, his Right in Furnaces, and all his moveables of every sort and kind, other than the sixty acres he had already bequeathed to her two eldest sisters Susanna and Ruth, the £40 lawful money he bequeathed to her, and a silver tankard he bequeathed to the church, their heirs and assigns forever, to be equally divided among them, excepting that he directed that the girls' aunt, his sister Abigail (Bolton) Ripley, during her widowhood, to her improvement, should have the small west front room in his house and as much firewood as she wanted out of his home farm.7,8,9,1
Death*6 July 1755She died shortly after her father and before his estate was probated on 6 July 1755 at age 33.5,1
(Daughter) Estate28 July 1755Her father's estate was valued at a total of £1404,15,4 and Hannah and two of her sisters, Elizabeth and Martha, inherited most of this by his will. His apparel and bedding and all his indoor moveable estate was appraised at £58,3,9; his livestock and husbandry tools at £59,8,3; his home lands together with all his other lands, cedar swamps and meadows given by will to his three daughters, Elizabeth, Hannah and Martha at £1036,5,4; his eighth part of Titicut Furnace and his sixteenth part of the South Furnace at £62,13,4; and his interest in the stock of coal and the next profits at the furnace at £27,15,4.

An inventory of the estate, completed and appraised on 4 July 1755, provided an itemization of the inheritance value for each of Bolton's daughters, but no additional documents, or information regarding the final accounting or distribution of his estate, were found in his probate packet. Further research of land records and probates, particularly of his daughters under their married names of Cowing, Leach, Thomson and Willis, may yield a more complete story. We do know that his 4th daughter, Hannah Thomson, wife of Peter, died just one month after her father's death, and before his will was probated. We also know that his youngest daughter, Martha Willis, wife of Joab, was alive after the will was executed, and that his 2nd daughter Ruth Leach was living in 1771 when she was appointed Executrix of her husband's probate. Research will continue in our attempt to finalize the distribution of his estate to our satisfaction.7,8,10,9

LineageHarry Emmett Bolton stated to the New England Historic and Genealogical Society, sometime before his death in 1958, that he was unable to prove the ancestry of his great-grandfather, Lemuel Bolton, but he believed that Lemuel was the son of William, the son of Nathaniel, the son of Nicholas, the Immigrant. Nathaniel and Elisha Bolton were sons of John Bolton who was the son of the immigrant Nicholas Boulton.1,2
