Three sons, one from Benjamin's first marriage and two from the couple's marriage, were enumerated with them in 1880. Kirby S. was 18 years old and worked as a laborer, and the two younger children, Robert and Bennie, were ages 8 and 6 years, respectively. Kirby was able to read and write; Robert could read, and not write; and Bennie was too young to have learned to do either. A nephew, Bennie Violet, was also enumerated in the Thomas household in 1880. He was 17 years old, able to read and write, and was working as a laborer. Three additional households of their family members were enumerated nearby, and all were within five households of each other. Benjamin's daughter, Annie Kate, and her husband, Asher B. Armstrong, were enumerated two households above Benjamin and Lucinda on the same census page; in the middle household, between Benjamin's and his daughter, Annie Kate's, Asher's brother and his wife, Louisa and William R. Armstrong, were enumerated; and two households away from Benjamin and Lucinda, on the next census page, another of Benjamin's daughters, Mary E., and her husband, John G. Langford, were enumerated with their two young sons. John Langford was the brother of the Louisa Armstrong who was next to Benjamin and Lucinda on the next census page.6,7,8,9 |

After the deaths of both of Eliza's parents, the four minor Langford children were split up to live with various relatives in Bureau County. Eliza's sister, Ethel, who was 7 years old, was enumerated in the Wolf household in 1880, and the sisters' brothers, Richard, Ellsworth and Willie, were enumerated with other relatives that census year. Richard and Ellsworth, ages 19 and 17 years, respectively, were with the family of their married brother, Jackson, and their youngest brother, Willie, who was 15 years old, was with the children's maternal grandparents, Mary and Richard Brewer. All of the boys had attended school within the census year. We've not been able to find their brother John, who was 24 years of age in 1880 and not yet married.5 |

Jesse was 37 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $100 and Evaline, who could neither read nor write, was 36 years of age. They were enumerated with seven children in 1850, six from Jesse's first marriage and one from the couple's marriage together. Jesse's married daughter, Mary Jane Wheeler, was recorded with her father's surname "Buley", and was 17 years old. She was also enumerated one month earlier with her husband, Benjamin Wheeler, and baby son, Zachariah, in their own household, also in Division 1, Barren County. Jesse's other five children from his first marriage were all single. Cena was 13 years old; Isaac and Thomas were ages 8 and 7 years, respectively; and Martha and Jesse were ages 5 and 3 years, respectively. Jesse and Evaline's son, James L., was 8 months old. Jesse's parents, Mary and Jesse Bewley Sr., along with Jesse Jr.'s family, and his brothers, Thomas Bewley and Nathan Bewley, with their wives and children, were all enumerated in 1850 in their own households, on either side of their parents. The four households of the extended Bewley family were clustered together and spanned two consecutive census pages.2 |
