(Brother) Brick Wall | The birthdates, and even an accurate birth order, for the brothers LANKFORD, Larkin, Benjamin, Isaac, Edmund, Walker, John, Stephen, Richard and Jackson, remain questions to us. On the 1810 census, their parents had six sons, two born before the date of the 1800 census and four born between 1800 and 1810; and on the 1820 census, the family included nine sons, three born between 1797, the year their parents married, and 1804, two born between 1805 and 1810, and four born between 1810 and 1820. There was also a probable daughter, born between1810 and 1820, on the 1820 census. The children's mother was recorded as over 45 years of age on the 1820 census, and would have been nearing the end of her child-bearing years. The age of her youngest son, Jackson, was consistently recorded, within one year, on the 1850 through 1880 censuses, estimating his year of birth between 1822 and 1823, which means he would not have been born in time to be included on the 1820 census. Many of her younger sons, according to the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, reported being born in or about 1800. While twins are possible, we hesitate to jump to that conclusion without some evidence to support it. We know nothing about the family’s daughter or daughters, and only the 1810 Franklin County, Kentucky census has given us enough confidence to conclude that the parent's' first six children were sons. So, bottom line, because we can't be sure of the brothers' years of birth, we've hit a Brick Wall when we try to decide the order of their births. Using the limited and inconsistent information obtained in our research, we've chosen to provide an arbitrary birth order we feel certain needs to be corrected. If you have information to help us resolve this issue, please contact us and let us know.3,4

(Grantor) Land Records | 11 November 1850 | From a deed dated 11 November 1850 in Anderson County, Kentucky, we learned that, after the death of their father, Larkin Langford Sr., Walker Langford, Benjamin Langford, Larkin Langford, Edmond Langford, Richard Langford, Jackson Langford, Stephen Langford and Isaac Langford, all brothers of John Langford, had agreed to sell their shares in a tract of land they had all inherited from their father's estate to John. We suspect from reading the deed, that the brothers were slow in making their commitments to John legal. John filed suit against his brothers for title to the land he had purchased from them, and won his case. What follows is our transcription of the deed confirming the sale of the land to John: This indenture made and entered into this 11th day of November 1850 between Walker, Benjamin, Larkin, Edmund, Richard, Jackson, Stephen and Isaac Langford of the first part by W. S. Hickman, the Master of Commissioners in Chancery appointed at the November term of the Anderson Circuit Court 1850 of the first part, and John Langford of the second part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the pursuit, pleadings and exhibits in the Suit in Chancery in the Anderson Circuit Court wherein the said John Langford is Complainant and the parties of the first part are the Defendants, and for and in consideration of their title names filed in said cause and the amounts therein set forth, have bargained, sold, released and conveyed, and by these presents do bargain, sell, release and convey all their right title and interest unto the party of the second part, in a certain tract of land lying on the waters of Crooked Creek in the county of Anderson, formerly in the counties of Shelby and Franklin and bounded as follows: Beginning at a white oak, hickory and sugar tree in Phillips line also N E corner to Thomas Harris, thence with Phillips’s line N 5½ degrees E 220 poles to the bank of Crooked Creek cornering at a shellbark hickory, thence down the Creek with its meanders N 44 degrees W 36 poles, hence North 7 degrees East 67 poles to two sugar trees and buckeye at the mouth of a drain, thence S 75 degrees W 36 poles to a cherry, dogwood, and hornbeam, thence S 55 degrees W, crossing the Creek at 80 poles, 126 poles to a stake in a field, thence N 84½ degrees West 248 poles to a maple, sugar tree and beech, thence South 5½ West 220 poles to two beeches and maple on the bank of Mitchell’s run, thence South 84½ degrees East 404 poles to the beginning, containing six hundred acres, it being the tract of land on which Larkin Langford Sr. died, and the same he purchased by deed from one George W. Kinney, which deed is recorded in the Clerk’s Office of the Shelby County Court. To have and to hold the interest hereby conveyed unto the said John Langford, his heirs and assigns forever, and the said W. S. Hickman conveying as Commissioner and in no other capacity whatever. Whereof the parties of the first part have hereunto set their hands and seals the date above set forth, and the document was signed with the signatures and seals of Walker Langford, Benjamin Langford, Larkin Langford, Edmond Langford, Richard Langford, Jackson Langford, Isaac Langford, and by William S. Hickman, Master Commissioner. The deed was certified and recorded by the Clerk of the Court in Anderson County, Kentucky on 13 November 1851. (We note that the name of Stephen Langford, although a party to the deed, was not listed as a signer on the transcription of the deed filmed at the courthouse.)1 |
Census US 1870* | 23 June 1870 | Elizabeth and Richard Langford were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 23 June 1870 in Walnut, Bureau County, Illinois. Richard was 52 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $2,000 and a personal estate valued at $1,400, and Elizabeth was 40 years of age and keeping house. Six of their children were enumerated with them in 1870. Jackson was 21 years of age and worked as a laborer on the farm; John and Eliza were ages 16 and 13 years, respectively; and Richard, Ellsworth and Willie were ages 10, 7 and 5 years, respectively. Also residing with the Langford family in 1870 was Chester Green, who was 21 years old, had been born in New Jersey, and worked as a farm laborer.

(We note that the name of Stephen Langford, although a party to the deed, was not listed as a signer on the transcription of the deed filmed at the courthouse.)5 |

(We note that the name of Stephen Langford, although a party to the deed, was not listed as a signer on the transcription of the deed filmed at the courthouse.)2 |
Death* | 1859 | He probably died about 1859 in Indiana at about age 58. His last child was born about 1858 and his widow would marry again on 24 April 1860.10 |

Three households of the Gilbert family were enumerated on that same census page in 1880, one right after the other. The first of the three was that of Deweese's father and stepmother, Martha and John B. Gilbert, then next, in the middle, was the household of Deweese and Louisa, and third, immediately below Deweese and Louisa, was the household of Deweese's half-sister, Allie, and her husband, John H. Gilbert, built the theatre that now bears his name, and is considered one of the greatest contributions to art in the state. When in health, you would always find him busy at his work. And he was a man who did his work in a workman like manner, never being satisfied until it just suited him.
