"old" Pond1
(Father) Immigration | 1630 | Two of his sons immigrated to New England in 1630. The story presented by Harris in his Daniel Pond genealogy was that John Pond and an unnamed brother, sons of one of Governor Winthrop's old neighbors, came to New England in the year 1630 with the Governor. After his arrival here, Governor Winthrop wrote home to his eldest son in Groton, asking him to tell "old Pond that both his sons are well and remember their duty." The author conjectured that "John and his brother were, doubtless, men of humble birth and small means, launched forth from the paternal roof by the old sire, to seek their fortunes in the new world. No further record of John was found, and "he may have returned to England, or pushed on to a more congenial climate. But one Robert, who it is surmised was the brother, sat down at Dorchester."1 |

Daniel Pond1
d. 4 February 1697/98
(Dedham Son) Research Notes | | Early Massachusetts research introduced us to Robert Pond, Robert Pond Jr. and William Pond, all found in Dorchester, and Daniel Pond of Dedham. Nineteenth century researchers suspected there was a relationship between the Dorchester Ponds and Daniel of Dedham, and were disappointed in their unsuccessful attempts, over many years, to find the desired documents to prove their hypothesis. Our work continues under the belief that their theory was probably correct, although we also continue to look for documentation to either prove or disprove that premise.
Robert Pond emigrated from England with his wife and young family and settled in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony (New England). He died there in 1637. His widow Mary married Edward Shepard of Cambridge. Robert and Mary Pond had a daughter Mary who was eleven years old at the time that her mother joined the church at Cambridge, and who later married John Blackman. There is evidence also that the widow Pond took at least two other children with her to Cambridge, Jonathan and Sarah. Edward Doubleday Harris in his 1873 Genealogical Record of Daniel Pond stated his belief that Robert Pond of Milton was also a son of Robert and Mary of Dorchester. Robert Jr. was made a freeman in 1642, married Mary Ball and died between 1600 and 1663. Their children were Mary, Martha, and probably the Sarah who married Desire Clap. William Pond was also supposed to have been a son of the first Robert Pond. William married Mary Dyer, had several children and remained in Dorchester. His daughter Thankful married Philip Withington.
James Savage, in his Genealogical Dictionary, published 1860-1862, suggested that Daniel Pond was perhaps also a son of Robert Pond, and a brother of Robert Pond and William Pond. Harris in his Daniel Pond work strongly supported this belief. He reminded his readers of the custom of our English ancestors to retain and pass down from father to son the family given names. Daniel Pond had several sons and Harris wrote that "if Savage's supposition is not correct, there is certainly a singular coincidence in the names which he bestowed upon them, for we find a Robert, a William, and a John. Another circumstance favoring the idea of a connection between the Dorchester and the Dedham men is that of Daniel's marriage." As presented earlier, after the death of Robert Pond of Dorchester, his widow Mary Pond, likely the mother of our Daniel Pond of Dedham, married Edward Shepard of Cambridge, a widower. Then Daniel married, as his first wife, Abigail Shepard, daughter of that same Edward Shepard by his first marriage. Although no positive evidence regarding Daniel's parentage has been found, there is a probability that he was the son of Robert Pond and a descendant of the Groton family.3,4 |
