b. circa 1763
Birth* | circa 1763 | Zilpah Snow was born circa 1763 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1 |
Marriage Intention | 24 May 1795 | An intention of marriage for David Bolton and Zilpah Snow of Raynham was recorded on 24 May 1795 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.3 |
Marriage* | | She married David Bolton, son of Jonathan Bolton and Thankful Borden.1 |
Census US 1800* | | Zilpah (Snow) Bolton was likely enumerated on the 1800 census in the household of her husband David Bolton in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. David and Zilpah would have been married about 5 years in 1800, and were both noted in the age category of 26 thru 44. Their household had two children: 1 male under 10 and 1 female under 10 who were probably their children and have not yet been fully identified.4 |
(Daughter) Will | 9 March 1807 | Zilpah Bolton was named in the will of her father Ebenezer Snow dated 9 March 1807 in Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The will named his son Ebenezer his Executor and made the following bequests: to his beloved wife Elizabeth, during her life, he gave the use of the easterly front room in his dwelling house along with a "decent annual maintenance" to be provided by his son Ebenezer; to his son Ebenezer, his heirs and assigns forever, he gave all his real and personal estate of whatever name or nature forever, and instructed Ebenezer to pay all the debts, funeral charges and other bequests named in the will; to each of his three daughters, Sarah Hall, Betsey Warren and Zilpah Bolton, he gave $20, and to his grandson Nathan Snow, he gave $1, stating again that all were to be paid by his son Ebenezer.5,6 |
(Heir) Probate | 1 January 1811 | In addition to a copy of her father's will, the only other document in the probate packet for her father's estate was dated 1 January 1811 at Raynham, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The will officially approved on that date, his son and Executor, Ebenezer Snow Jr., along with Jonathan Shaw, Esq. and Seth Hall, Gentleman, agreed to pay the sum of $5,000 to the Judge of the Probate and Wills. The condition of the obligation was that Ebenezer Snow Jr. agreed as Executor to assume and pay all the debts and legacies of his father, Ebenezer Snow. The document appears to imply that all recipients named in the will were still living on 1 Jan 1811.6 |

Children | 1. | John Bolton+; He was probably the son of one of the sons of Jonathan Bolton and Thankful Borden, but whether of John, David, Thomas or possibly another not yet identified, is entirely speculation at this point in our research. Not much has been learned yet about David and Zilpah Bolton, but since we already placed one "stray son John" with David's brother John, we've placed this "son" with David and Zilpah |

b. 5 January 1794, d. 7 December 1871
Birth* | 5 January 1794 | John Snyder was born on 5 January 1794 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.3,2 |
Marriage* | 24 December 1815 | He married Hannah Catherine Jacoby, daughter of Philip Jacoby and Catharine Klinker, on 24 December 1815.1,4,3,5,2 |
Relocation* | 1819 | John and Hannah moved with their surviving daughter, Catherine, to Holmesburg, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, in the Spring of 1819.2 |
Census US 1850* | 1 September 1850 | Hannah and John Snyder were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 1 September 1850 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. John was 56 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $4,000, and Hannah was also 56 years of age. Four of the couple's children were enumerated in the Snyder household in 1850. Mary was 29 years of age; Alfred was age 27 and worked as a laborer; Wilhelmina was 16 years old; and Emma was age 12. Another boy, John Snyder, age 16, was also enumerated with the family and may have possibly been a nephew.
It's unfortunate that relationships were not included on the 1850 census. We can determine that he was not a son because of his placement in the family by the census taker. The first four children were all listed in descending order by age -- until John, who was listed after 12-year-old Emma.
Whatever John's relationship in the family was, he and the other two youngest children, Wilhelmina and Emma, had all attended school within the year. Hannah's mother, Catharine Jacoby, also resided with her daughter and son-in-law in 1850. Catherine was 92 years of age.6 |
(Husband) Death | 22 September 1854 | John became a widower when Hannah Catherine (Jacoby) Snyder died on 22 September 1854 at age 60.5,2 |
Census US 1860* | 28 July 1860 | John Snyder was enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 28 July 1860 in Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was 65 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $8,000 and a personal estate valued at $300. His youngest daughter, Emma, who was 20 years old, was the only other member of his household in 1860. Enumerated in the previous household on the same census page was the family of John's daughter and son-in-law, Wilhelmina and Nathan M. Wiser, and in the next previous household before Nathan and Wilhelmina was the family of Nathan's parents.7 |
(Father-in-law) Census US 1870 | 16 August 1870 | John was enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 16 August 1870 in the household of his daughter and son-in-law, Wilhelmina and Nathan M. Wiser, in Warrington, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was 76 years of age and a retired farmer with a personal estate valued at $4,200.8 |
Death* | 7 December 1871 | He died on 7 December 1871 at age 773 |
Burial* | | and was buried with his wife in Beulah Cemetery, New Britain, Bucks County, or in Saint James Church Cemetery, Chalfont, Bucks County. Our confusion developed when we learned that Find a Grave memorials placed them in different cemeteries with matching gravestones, and The Jacoby Family reported that John, who died 17 years after Hannah Catherine, was buried in the same cemetery as his wife.3,9,5 |
