Samuel Donaldson1

ChartsDescendants of John Hinds, including our Walters and Ralphs
Marriage*He married ______ Bell, daughter of Andrew Bell and Lettice __?__.1
(Witness to Deed) Marriage Settlement2 June 1752Samuel was identified as of the town of Cavan in County Cavan, gentleman, when he witnessed an articles of marriage agreement dated 2 June 1752 made between Andrew Bell of Aghacreevy, County Cavan, and Andrew Bell, his son and heir apparent, of the one part, Ann Clarke of Putiaghan, spinster, of the other part and Walter Hinds of Corrakane of the third part, all in the county of Cavan concerning a marriage to be had between Andrew Bell, the son of Andrew, and Ann Clarke. The two Andrew Bells were Samuel's father-in-law and brother-in-law.2
(Son-in-Law) Probate13 March 1756Probate was granted on the estate of his father-in-law Andrew Bell of Ardleny on 13 March 1756 to Robert Bell, the son and one of the executors named in Andrew's will, saving the right of Lettice Bell, Samuel Donaldson, Reverend Michael Neligan and Alexander Delanouze, the other executors.3
(Son-in-Law) EstateSamuel Donaldson was an executor for the will of his father-in-law Andrew Bell of Ardleny. Andrew's will confirmed that his wife Lettice Bell was to receive £14 yearly for life out of the lands of Aghacreevy as reserved to her by their marriage settlement upon the marriage of his son Andrew Bell. He bequeathed his son Andrew 5 shillings, having already settled on him the lands of Aghacreevy. His son Robert Bell was to receive his title and the lease of Ardleny when he came of age and his daughter Ann was to receive £100, provided she marry into a good protestant family. His granddaughters, Lettice Donaldson, Lettice Hinds and Lettice Ginty were each to receive £10 to be raised out of the lands of Lavagh upon their marriages, and in case any of the granddaughters should die unmarried, their legacies were to revert to their respective mothers.

Andrew's will then reviewed the line of succession, stating that if his son Andrew were to die without male issue, then the estate settled on him was to revert to the testator's son Robert Bell and his male issue. Failing such, his interest in Aghacreevy was to revert to the male issue of his eldest daughter and so on to the male issue of his youngest daughter successively. If his son Robert Bell were to die without male or female issue, the profits of Ardleny and Lavagh were to return in the same kind to his other five daughters and their heirs. (None of his children, other than Andrew and Robert, were named.)

He appointed his loving son Robert Bell, his wife Lettice Bell, his son-in-law Samuel Donaldson, Reverend Michael Neligan and Alexander Delanouze executors, and stated his desire that his son Robert might be directed by his other executors, and that he was not to marry without their consent. He further directed that the legacies charged on the lands of Lavagh were to be paid out of profits thereof, and further profits were to then return to his son Robert and his issue.

The will was witnessed by his son-in-law John Ginty, John Wilson and George Finley.3

Sarah Donaldson1

b. 1825
Father*John Donaldson1 b. 1796
Mother*Christina Cresimore1 b. 1795
Birth*1825Sarah Donaldson was born about 1825 in Virginia.1
Marriage*1867She married, as his second wife, Allen Cutlip in 1867 in Braxton County, West Virginia.2
Census US 1880*21 June 1880Sarah and Allen Cutlip were enumerated on the 1880 census taken on 21 June 1880 in Holly, Braxton County, West Virginia. Allen was 64 years of age and a farmer, and Sarah was 60 years of age and keeping house. Neither was able to read or write. Two of Allen's children from his first marriage were enumerated with them, as was a granddaughter and a niece. Allen's son, George Wesley, was 32 years of age, single, unable to read or write, and worked as a farmer. Allen's daughter, Margaret A. Crawford, was 37 years of age, divorced, unable to read or write, and worked as a clothes washer. Her daughter, Medora J. Crawford, was 6 years old. Sarah and Allen's niece, Sarah Crawford, who was 15 years old and the daughter of Sarah (Donaldson) Cutlip's sister, Frances (Donaldson) Crawford Crites, was also enumerated with the Cutlip family in 1880. Her mother and siblings were enumerated that year in the household of her mother and stepfather, Jesse Crites, in Otter, Braxton County.3
(Stepmother) Relationship NoteIt troubles us that we have not yet been able to identify the husband of Sarah's stepdaughter, Margaret A. (Cutlip) Crawford. We know his surname was Crawford, and that he and Margaret had separated, and likely divorced, before the 1880 census was taken. Margaret and their daughter, Medora J. Crawford, were enumerated in 1880 in the household of Margaret's father and stepmother, Sarah and Allen Cutlip, in Holly, Braxton County, West Virginia. Medora, who was born about 1874, died in April of 1885 at age 12.

We had originally thought that Margaret A. (Cutlip) Crawford's husband might become important in our search for Brick Wall Harry Crawford because we had been concentrating our search for Harry among the Braxton County, West Virginia Crawfords. Medora's mother, Margaret A. (Cutlip) Crawford, was the stepdaughter of Sarah (Donaldson) Cutlip, who was a sister of Frances (Donaldson) Crawford Crites who had married, as her first husband, Charles Crawford, a son of John Crawford and Susan (Woods) Crawford, whose extended family had ended up becoming the primary focus of Harry's Brick Wall research. We noted that Sarah Crawford, the younger daughter of Frances (Donaldson) Crawford Crites and her first husband, Charles Crawford, was also enumerated in Allen Cutlip's household on the 1880 census.

If anyone reading this can help us identify the husband of Margaret A. (Cutlip) Crawford, please contact us.3,4

The family’s surname on the ship's manifest was written correctly as "Croghan" and was transcribed incorrectly by Ancestry as "Loghan". The family's ticket number was 8707 and their group, in addition to their mother Kate, consisted of her sons, Hugh and Joseph and daughters Julia, Annie, Tessie and Monica. They reported their last place of residence as Strokestown, Ireland and were going to depart the ship in New York City.6
Immigration*22 May 1898Their ship arrived in New York City on 22 May 1898 and, remarkably, immigration officials did not change the spelling of their surname. Immigration recorded everyone's health as "good", and noted that Kate's daughter Annie had a deformed back from a fall. On arrival in America, Kate's occupation was recorded as "widow". She reported they were planning to join Thomas Conry who resided at 930 Spruce Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and that they had a total of $700 with them.7
Census US 1900*6 June 1900Kate Croghan appeared on the 1900 census taken on 6 June 1900 at 863 46th Street, Ward 34, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was a widow, 57 years of age, reportedly born in May of 1843, although it was more likely 1841. She was reported to have given birth to 10 children, 6 of whom were still living and resided with her in the house she rented in 1900. Julia M. was single and 28 years of age, although her birth was recorded incorrectly as August 1871. She was employed as a cashier in a grocery. Annie was single and 26 years of age, although the year of her birth was reported incorrectly as 1873. She was not employed. Joseph P. was single and 23 years of age with his date of birth reported correctly. He was employed as a salesman in a grocery. Hugh's name was enumerated as "Hughbert". He was 18 years old although his year of birth was reported incorrectly as 1881. He worked as a salesman in a grocery. The two youngest, Teresa and Monica, ages 16 and 14 respectively, attended school and their dates of birth were reported correctly. Everyone in the family had immigrated in 1898 and had been in the United States for two years.8
Census US 1910*19 April 1910Catherine appeared on the 1910 census taken on 19 April 1910 in 897 North 48th Street, Ward 44, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Her age was recorded as 61, she was a widow and was recorded as having given birth to 6 children, all of whom were still living. She had actually given birth to 10 children, including a set of twins. All six of her surviving children were single and resided in her household in 1910, which was a house they rented. Her son Joseph P. was 33 years of age and employed as a salesman in a store. Julia M. was recorded as 30 years of age, was actually 39, and was not employed. Hugh "W." was 28 years of age and employed as a street superintendent. Annie, who was actually 37 years old, was recorded as 26 and was not employed. Teresa was 23 years of age and employed as a telephone operator, and Monica, who was 24, was recorded as 20 years of age and was a cashier in a grocery store. Everyone in the family was recorded with 1898 as their year of immigration and no one had been naturalized.9
(Mother) Death4 March 1912Kate provided the information for her daughter Annie's death certificate and reported her date of birth as 19 October 1883, while the year was actually 1872.10,11
Census US 1920*6 January 1920Catherine appeared on the 1920 census taken on 6 January 1920 at 230 South 40th Street, Ward 27, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. She was a widow, and her age was recorded as 72, although she was more likely about 79. Four of her children lived with their mother in 1920. Julia's age was recorded as 39, although was actually 49, and her occupation was hair dresser. Hugh was recorded as 37 years of age, although was actually 39, and was a grocery store manager. Theresa was recorded as 29 years of age, and was actually 35, and was a telephone operator. And, Monica was recorded as 26 years of age, and was actually 33, and was a hair dresser. The family rented their home. Also residing with the Croghan family in 1920 was lodger Albert Patrick Rorke, who was 38 years of age and a patrolman in the city of Philadelphia. It's likely that the Croghans and Rorkes knew each other in Ireland since their family’s homes were both close to Strokestown in County Roscommon. The Croghan family reported their year of immigration as 1888, although it was actually 1898. Hugh Croghan was the only member of his immediate family who had been naturalized. Their lodger Albert reported his year of immigration as 1910, although it was actually 1908. He also had been naturalized.12
Death*3 April 1930She died of chronic myocarditis, after having the disease for a period of three years, and acute cardiac dilatation for one day on 3 April 1930 in her home at 826 North 41st Street, Ward 24, Philadelphia, at age 88. Her daughter Julia, who lived at the same address, provided the information for her mother's death certificate, and believed her to be only about 81 years of age.5
Burial*She was buried in Section 38 of Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.13

  1. [S7] Obituary of Samuel Shove, submitted by his son Josiah Shove, pages 223-225, although some of the lineage information, especially of the early Shoves in America, has proved to be incorrect. (Names mixed up and at least one generation skipped.) Samuel's son Josiah likely wrote parts of the obituary from his memory of stories his father had told him. And, of course, neither of them had any first-hand information of anything before Samuel's birth in 1789. From this researcher's point of view, other sources should be considered more reliable -- especially on events and people of the 1600s and 1700s, Necrology of the Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of Domestic Industry, for the year 1874, Providence, Rhode Island, LHB Notebook - Books, News, & Online, Summerlin, Nevada.
