They had been married for six years and Anna had given birth to four children, all of whom were living and enumerated with them. Otto J. and Goldie A. were ages 5 and 4 years, respectively, and had attended school within the census year; Grace was 2 years old; and an unnamed infant son was seven months old.5

Barkdull committed suicide by hanging himself on 31 December 1913 at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, Rilla and Phillip Barkdull, at 2132 North C Street, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana. John was 55 years of age had been an invalid for 17 years.6,7,8,9

Census US 1920*6 January 1920Anna and William F. Hale were enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 6 January 1920 in Washington, Starke County, Indiana. William was 47 years of age and a general farmer who rented his farm, and Anna was 44 years of age. Two children were enumerated with them in 1920. Leo, William's son from his, probably, second marriage, was 15 years old, and Lucy, the daughter of William's deceased third wife, was 11 years old. Both of the children had attended school within the census year, and everyone in the household, with the exception of William's wife, Anna, was able to read and write.11 
Census US 1930*16 April 1930Anna and William F. Hale were enumerated on the 1930 census taken on 16 April 1930 in Washington, Starke County, Indiana. William was 57 years of age and had been 17 years old at his first marriage, and Anna was 54 years of age and had been 15 years old when she married for the first time. They rented their home, which was on a farm, and owned a Radio set. They were both able to read, write and speak English. Three of their grandchildren, sons of William's divorced daughter, Lucy (Hale) Freet, were enumerated in the Hale household in 1930. Ray R., Fred and William Freet were ages 6, 5 and 2 years old, respectively. The children's parents had divorced and their father, Carl Edward Freet, was enumerated in 1930 with his former brother-in-law, Leo Waldren Hale, in Gary, Lake County, Indiana. We've not been able to identify the children's mother on the 1930 census.13

Two roomers were also enumerated in her household that year.
