We have arbitrarily changed their birth year to 1718 in this project to have it make more sense.1

(Minor) Guardianship9 December 1783 On 9 December 1783, in response to a petition by his brother Jonathan, Administrator of the estate of their deceased father, regarding the appointment of a guardian for Thomas and the other minor children of their parents, the Orphans' Court of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, appointed their uncle, Thomas Jones, guardian for the deceased's and Susannah (Jones) Heaton's minor children, all under the age of 14 years, Robert, Jesse, Mary and Thomas Heaton, to take care of them, and their estate.11,4

Thomas was 47 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $7,000 and a personal estate valued at $1,000. Eliza was 40 years of age and keeping house. The couple's six children resided with their parents in 1870. Annie was 10 years old, Jonathan was 9, Sallie 7, Mary 6, Newton 3, and the baby Alfred was one month old. The three older children, Annie, Jonathan and Sallie were all attending school. Also enumerated with the family in 1870 was Mary McClusker, age 24 and born in Ireland, who worked for the family as a domestic servant.8 
Census US 18804 June 1880Eliza and Thomas Heaton were enumerated on the 1880 census taken on 4 June 1880 in Moreland, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Thomas was 57 years of age and a farmer, and Eliza was 51 years of age and keeping house. Her father had been born in England, and her mother in Pennsylvania. All six of the couple's children were enumerated in their parents' household in 1870. Annie was 20 years old and at home, Jonathan was 19 years old and at school, Sallie was age 17, Mary was 15, Newton 13, and Alfred 9. All four of the younger children had attended school within the census year. Also enumerated with the family in 1880 was Eliza’s sister, Mary A. Marsh, who was 56 years of age.9

Census US 1870*17 August 1870Julia and Thomas Heaton were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 17 August 1870 in Buena Vista, Kenton County, Kentucky. Thomas was 57 years of age with real estate valued at $15,000 and a personal estate valued at $1,000. He worked as a clerk in a store, and Julia was 55 years of age. Their son, Arthur had died on June 1, the cut-off date for household enumeration, and was recorded posthumously. He would have been 19 years old by August 17, and had been a bookkeeper. The couple's four other children were enumerated in their parents' household in 1870. Ada was 25 years of age and at home; Stanley was 23 years of age and worked as a farm laborer; Mary and Theodore were ages 16 and 15, respectively, and attending school. Also residing with the Heaton family in 1870 was Laura Johnston, who was 35 years of age and worked as a domestic.2

(Daughter) Relocation1734Before she was born, and while her father was still in his early 20s, he was one of the seven proprietors who arrived in Upper Ashuelot, Keene’s original name, to open the dense forest for settlement. It was at Heaton’s log cabin where three of the settlers made the first attempt to winter in the area. Threat of starvation, however, made the venture unsuccessful. By February they were forced to return to Massachusetts to await warmer weather.2 
(Daughter) Research Notes We note that several of births of the children of Thankful and Seth Heaton were recorded in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire which makes it difficult to accurately determine their actual places of birth. We add to this our suspicion regarding the date of 1749 reported in the "Oldest house" article as Seth Heaton's second arrival and his family's subsequent residence in Upper Ashuelot, which later became Keene, New Hampshire. Our conclusion is that the dates don't actually matter. It all happened a long time ago, and Seth and his family were very early pioneers to the area. Their story -- and their house is a wonderful thing for the descendants of Seth and Thankful (Field) Heaton to know, and also for the town of Keene, New Hampshire, to celebrate.2

(Daughter) ResidenceAfter Indian hostilities lessened, her father returned to Upper Ashuelot and found charred ruins where his log cabin and small orchard once stood. On land across the pathway from his first home he built the low-framed farmhouse that, although extensively remodeled, still stands at 500 Marlboro Street.

Four of Seth and Thankful's children served in the Revolutionary War. At the time of his death in 1797, he owned several hundred acres of land in the Beech Hill area, all of which he willed to his children. Remarkably, descendants of Seth and Thankful Heaton lived in the house until 1962, when the property was sold.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, hobos, who were usually penniless migrant workers, “rode the rails” into Cheshire County during warm weather months looking for any kind of work. The Cheshire Railroad tracks ran behind the Heaton backyard. Freight trains coming into Keene from the south had to slow down for the Eastern Avenue crossing. Stories were told that hobos would jump off the train onto the Heaton backyard and knock on the back door. They would offer to mow the lawn, split firewood or do other chores in exchange for a hearty meal that the residents were known to provide as compensation.

Although the house has been extensively remodeled through the years, it continues to capture the interest of historically minded citizens as “the oldest house in Keene,” so designated by the Ashuelot Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Brick Wall*Valentine Heaton was John Shelton's Brick Wall. John knew Valentine was born around 1800 in Pennsylvania, married widow Nancy (Berry) Gordon in 1843 in Morgan County, Illinois, had one son, and died in Scott County, Illinois in 1845. John had been focusing his research efforts in Washington County, Pennsylvania because he had heard from family stories that Valentine had grown up near his future wife, and that Nancy's parents had lived for a time in Pike Run, Washington County.

John Heaton had been a frustrating Brick Wall for Dave Benne for a long time. Who was John? Where did he come from? Who were his parents? Dave knew from early Heaton research that John had been born in Pennsylvania, married Rocceana Kensler in 1830 in Madison County, Illinois. had seven children, and died in Madison County in 1844. The early Heaton research reported that John had probably relocated to Madison County with his brother "Benjamin".

Dave and John, both Heaton researchers, connected with each other through the wonders of the internet. Dave told John he had genetic evidence that his John Heaton and John Shelton’s Valentine Heaton may have been brothers. Dave had broadened his research to include additional DNA studies and contacted us because one of his reports indicated a possible connection to Isaac Heaton and/or his wife Hannah Bowen, both of whom he found on our website. Isaac and Hannah had relocated with most of their 12 children in 1785 from Berkeley County, Virginia to that part of Washington County, Pennsylvania that would become Greene County in 1796. Dave hoped, because of our thorough study of Isaac Heaton and his extended family, we might know something that could lead him to identify his John Heaton's parents. We agreed to help, and rather quickly determined we couldn't connect his John to any of Isaac's or Hannah's extended families.3,4,5,6 
Relationship Note*John Shelton's wife, Amanda, is a descendant of Brick Wall Valentine Heaton, Dave Benne is a descendant of Brick Wall John Heaton, and this researcher is a descendant of Isaac Heaton.3,4,5 
Brick Wall Research* Both researchers, Dave Benne and John Shelton, wanted us to pursue the idea that their two Brick Walls might have been brothers. They suggested that the Benjamin Heaton who was enumerated in Madison County, Illinois, on the 1830 census might be the earlier proposed "brother Benjamin" and would be a good clue to follow. Benjamin's 1830 household included three males ages 20 thru 29 whom, they thought, "Might turn out to be Benjamin, John and Valentine. We learned that Benjamin had been born in Culpeper County, Virginia and, as we researched him and his extended family, we added some new Heatons to our database. We enjoyed the process and, unfortunately, found nothing to connect him to John or Valentine and had to conclude that Benjamin was not our John's or Valentine's brother.3,4,6,7,5,8,9,10,11 
Brick Wall ResearchBecause we knew more about Dave's Brick Wall John Heaton than we did about John's, we next chose Valentine Heaton and his wife, Nancy Berry, as our focus. Theirs was a love story that began while they were both teenagers in Pennsylvania and, even after they broke up and Nancy married and moved away, Valentine never forgot her. He would be 42 years old before they were married in 1843, and he would die just two years later. Nancy’s first husband, William E. Gordon, had died in 1839 leaving her with six children, and together she and Valentine had one son, Samuel Washington Heaton, who married Margaret Campbell in 1869. We researched the extended families of all the parents, children, siblings, spouses and anyone else we could find who might have known Valentine, collected lots of new families and some great stories, yet learned nothing about Valentine and his past. We also didn’t find anything to connect Valentine Heaton to our Brick Wall John Heaton.12,13,14,3,4,15,16,17,18,19,5 
Brick Wall Research About this time, John Shelton mentioned he had read about a group of people who had departed from Washington County, Pennsylvania and settled in Madison County, Illinois about 1817. He suggested we all take a fresh look at the county's history. So, we regrouped and headed back to Madison County with a clean slate to learn more about the Six Mile Prairie where John Heaton had lived. We learned from The History of Madison County, Illinois that the first settlement on the Six Mile was made in 1801, and that one of the earliest, and most numerous of the families in the early history of Madison County was the Gillham family.

We researched the Gillhams and their extended families until our brains fell out. We learned that William Campbell Gillham Sr. settled briefly in Six Mile Prairie and his daughter Agness Gillham married John Guy Lofton, one of the earliest judges of the Court of Common Pleas of Madison County. Their son Thomas G. Lofton married Betsey Heaton in 1819. We learned that William Campbell Gillham Sr.'s brother, Isaac Gillham Sr., had sons, William Gillham and Isaac Gillham Jr., who married sisters, Barbara Heaton and Rebecca Hayden, in 1821 and 1823, respectively. Isaac Gillham Jr. was appointed administrator of our Brick Wall John Heaton’s probate in 1844 and, when Isaac died in 1845, his widow Rebecca (Hayden) Gillham and Calvin Kinder, son of Valentine Kinder, took over John’s probate as administrators.

A quick note: In our research over the years, we have often seen the HEATON surname spelled a variety of ways. EATON, HAYDEN, HAYTON, HAIDEN, for example. So we asked ourselves, did we now have five Heatons in and around Madison County: John, Valentine, Betsey, Barbara and Rebecca?

Also from The History of Madison County, Illinois, we learned that Valentine Kinder led quite a large company of families from Washington County, Pennsylvania to Madison County, Illinois in 1817. The colony included the families of Valentine Kinder, Isaac Braden, Philip Hawks, and others as well. The party traveled by flat boat down the Ohio from Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia) to Shawneetown, Illinois. From there, their stock was driven across the country via the New Design Settlement, and they traveled from Shawneetown by keel boat to St. Louis, and then along the Six Mile route to their chosen home of Six Mile Prairie.20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33 
Brick Wall Research We were familiar with the name Valentine Kinder from the work we had done in 2017 to establish which John Heaton was the father of Washington Heaton of East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Valentine was closely associated with Washington Heaton’s brother, James Heaton, who died in Washington County in 1810 leaving a widow Barbara Heaton and five children, two sons and three daughters. Dave told us that several people with the Kinder surname had married into his extended Heaton family in Madison County later in the 1800s, and John's interest was piqued because of the name Valentine Kinder. Maybe Valentine, being a relatively unusual name, would be a clue leading to his Valentine. We were all hopeful as we began researching the Kinder family.

Valentine’s eldest daughter’s name was Barbara – and the bells started ringing! Could James Heaton’s widow Barbara be the daughter of Valentine Kinder? Could our Brick Wall John Heaton, our Brick Wall Valentine Heaton, Betsey Heaton, Barbara Heaton and Rebecca Hayden be the children of James and Barbara (Kinder) Heaton?

William Gillham, husband of Barbara (Heaton) Gillham, purchased Valentine Kinder’s Bible from his estate. James Heaton’s parents were John and Rebecca, and Barbara Kinder’s parents were Valentine and Elizabeth. If James and Barbara Heaton followed the naming rules for their children that were common at the time, their sons would have been John and Valentine, and their daughters would have been Elizabeth (Betsey), Rebecca and Barbara.

We didn’t know if we were on the right track with that thinking or not, and the coincidences were piling up. We don't believe in coincidences, so... what were we missing?34,35,36,2,37 
Brick Wall Solved* As we were contemplating our next steps, Dave Benne, who first introduced us to his John Heaton Brick Wall, decided to take another look at the probate records in Madison County, Illinois. “Just in case”, he told us. And: Voilà! Success! Right where they had been silently waiting all these years, Dave found all the answers we needed. His Brick Wall John Heaton was solved, and in the process, John Shelton's Brick Wall Valentine Heaton was also solved.

Dave found the evidence we needed to prove that Barbara Heaton, widow of James Heaton of Washington County, Pennsylvania was, indeed, Barbara Kinder, daughter of Valentine Kinder of Washington County, Pennsylvania and Madison County, Illinois. From the multiple probate packets Dave obtained for us, we also discovered that Barbara (Kinder) Heaton remarried, after the death of James Heaton, to Alexander Laughlin. After their marriage, Alexander and Barbara, with her five Heaton children, relocated with the Kinder family and others to Madison County, Illinois. Barbara became a widow for the second time when Alexander died in 1825, and Barbara herself died in 1831. Barbara's probate papers proved that the Heaton children, Betsey (Heaton) Lofton, Brick Wall John Heaton, Brick Wall Valentine Heaton, Rebecca (Hayden) Gillham and Barbara (Heaton) Gillham were her children and heirs. Her probate also introduced us to three additional children she had had with her husband, Alexander. Mary (Laughlin) Lewis, James Laughlin, and Sarah Laughlin were also her heirs.

We were thrilled! What began as first Dave's search for the parents of his Brick Wall John Heaton, and then John Shelton's search for the parents of his Brick Wall Valentine Heaton, grew to become a very worthwhile sharing of ideas, healthy skepticism and puzzle-building teamwork to find even more answers than we bargained for. What an exciting finish to the rewarding experience of collaborating with other Heaton researchers. Dave Benne and John Shelton are two fine gentlemen, and we thank them both for letting us share their journey, and for welcoming our help as we all worked together to identify their Heaton ancestors.

Research Opinion*While our research confirmed that Brick Walls John Heaton and Valentine Heaton were brothers, we did not learn their respective years of birth. Only one son was enumerated on the 1800 census, and both were enumerated on the 1810. We can't yet be sure which son was the older. If their parents adhered to the naming rules common at the time, John would have been born first and named for his paternal grandfather, John Heaton, and Valentine second and named for his maternal grandfather, Valentine Kinder. Both of the boys' grandfathers lived nearby, and we know that their maternal grandfather, Valentine Kinder, was an integral part of their daily life, and we're not sure what role their paternal grandfather, John Heaton, played. Our conclusion is that either name, John or Valentine, could have been chosen for their first-born son. We've gone with John, here, primarily because of the common naming rules and will be happy to switch their birth-order if new information becomes available to us.57,58,2

The household consisted of 1 male age 10 thru 14, 2 males ages 20 thru 29, 1 female age 5 thru 9, 1 female age 15 thru 19 and 1 female 40 thru 49. We believe that John and Valentine Heaton, at ages 31 and 29 respectively in 1830, were the older males. All of their Heaton sisters were married and enumerated in their husbands' households and their Laughlin half-sister, Mary (Laughlin) Fielding, had married early in 1830 and was enumerated in her husband's household. Their two other Laughlin half-siblings, James at 13, and the youngest Sarah being between the ages of 5 thru 9, along with a female household helper between the ages of 15 thru 19, we believe would have made up the remainder of his mother's household.42 
(Son) Death9 December 1831Valentine's mother died intestate on 9 December 1831 in Madison County at age 50.44 
(Purchaser) Estate Sale11 January 1832Valentine was among the purchasers of items from the sale of the estate of his mother, Barbara Laughlin, deceased, lately of Madison County, Illinois, his name appearing several times on the Bill of Sale list dated 11 January 1832. Almost all of the purchasers were members of her immediate and extended family. Those on the list of the most interest to us for the purpose of this project were John Heaton, Valentine Heaton, Thomas G. Lofton, Isaac Gillham Jr., Fielding Jefferson Lewis, Gallatin Kinder, Samuel Kinder, Hiram Arthur, Thomas Gillham, Jacob Kensler, Isaac Braden, Ephraim Davidson and Margaret Letitia Davidson.61 
Land Records*1832 In 1832, Valentine owned and operated land in Township 3, Section 13, Range 10, Madison County.14 
Estate Sale*August 1832Valentine Heaton and John Heaton were among those relatives, friends and neighbors who purchased items from the estate of John's father-in-law, Jacob Kensler, of Madison County, Illinois, in August 1832. The list of purchasers included the names of Jacob's widow, Mary Kensler, their son Jacob Kensler, the administrator of the estate, Thomas Gillham, the fourth party to the probate bond, James Botkin, Jacob's son-in-law, John Heaton, his brother, Valentine Heaton, Thomas G. Lofton, Ephraim Davidson and Hiram Arthur.62 
Guardianship*4 September 1832Valentine was appointed guardian of the persons and property of his half-siblings, James and Sarah Laughlin, minor heirs of their deceased mother, Barbara (Kinder) Heaton Laughlin, on 4 September 1832 by the probate court of Madison County.48 
(Heir) Estate Distribution6 April 1833Valentine received $105.50, his full heir's share, on 6 April 1833 from the administrators of the estate of his mother, Barbara Laughlin, deceased. On the same date he received $211.00 for the full shares, as guardian, of James and Sarah Laughlin, his minor siblings. The shares of the two older sons, Valentine and his brother John Heaton, were paid by the estate administrators directly to them, the shares of the four married daughters were paid to each of their husbands, and the shares of the two minor children were paid to their half-brother, Valentine Heaton, as their guardian. On 13 February 1846 Rebecca Gillham, daughter of the deceased, provided a written statement to the probate court stating that she was one of the several heirs of Barbara Laughlin and that, to her knowledge, the several heirs of said deceased received of the administrators of her estate the sum of $105.50 each, by themselves or through their guardians.63,50,51,52,53,54,55,56 
Marriage*24 April 1843Valentine married, as her second husband, Nancy (Berry) Gordon, daughter of Samuel Berry, on 24 April 1843 in Morgan County, Illinois. Valentine had described Nancy as his childhood sweetheart. They had quarreled for some reason, and broken up, and she had married William E. Gordon and moved with him to Morgan County.

At Gordon's death in November 1839, Nancy was left a widow with six children, and was having a hard time financially. She was struggling to support her family and to keep the farm on which she lived. Valentine heard of her hardship from a man who had gone to Madison County for supplies. Upon learning the news. Valentine said he would go to Morgan County and marry her, if she would have him, as he had never loved any other girl. The man advised against it, telling Valentine that Nancy had teenage sons who might resent a stepfather. Valentine, however, went to Morgan County, and to Nancy, anyway.12,14,13 
Residence*After their marriage, Nancy and Valentine continued to live on the farm to which she had come as a bride in the fall of 1823. Valentine purchased more land in Morgan County and proved to be a good provider and stepfather to Nancy and her children.14 
Death*28 November 1845He died on 28 November 1845 in Scott County, Illinois, at about age 4514 
Burial*30 December 1873 and was buried first in Lynnville Cemetery, Morgan County. Almost 30 years later, on 30 December 1873, his body was moved to Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville, Morgan County.14

Zachary was 30 years of age and working as a stair builder, and Jennie was 24 years of age and keeping house. Their three children were enumerated with them in 1880. Wallace was 7 years old and at school, and Clara and Charles were ages 4 and 2 years, respectively.3 
(Daughter) Will20 May 1890In the will of her father, Grove L. Heaton. Dated 20 May 1890 in Hanover, Chautauqua County, New York, all the real estate he owned at the time of his death was devised and bequeathed to Virginia's mother for her use during her natural life, and all the rents, issues, profits of said real estate and appurtenances during that said period. Upon the death of her mother, his will gave, devised and bequeathed, absolutely, all of his said real estate to his two daughters, Gertrude L. Howes and Virginia Weir, and to the children then surviving of his deceased daughter, Fanny H. Talcott. His will clarified that one-third was to go to each of his said daughters, and one-third to the surviving children of his deceased daughter, to be divided among them, share and share alike. His will appointed Melvin Montgomery his Executor and in the will authorized and empowered him to sell and convey his real estate at any time that he believed it advisable to do so, and to invest the proceeds thereof and pay the income therefrom to his said wife.7

As part of the process, his surviving heirs were identified and recorded as follows: His widow, Sophia Heaton of Silver Creek, New York, of full age; his daughter, Gertrude Howes of Silver Creek, New York, of full age; his daughter, Virginia Weir of 563 East 141st Street, New York City, New York, of full age; his grandson, George H. Talcott of Joliet, Illinois, age 18; his grandson, Walter Talcott of Joliet, Illinois, age 14; and his grandson, Chauncey Talcott of Silver Creek, New York, age 5. His three grandsons were the children of his deceased daughter, Fanny (Heaton) Talcott.8 
(Wife) Death19 March 1898Jennie became a widow when Zachary Taylor Weir died on 19 March 1898 at age 48.9,10 
(Mother) Death22 October 1898Her son, Wallace, who was married and had a child, died at age 25, on 22 October 1898, after developing overlapping lung and brain complications from pulmonary tuberculosis. He died in his mother's home at 706 East 143rd Street, Mott Haven, Bronx, New York City, Bronx County, New York.11,12,13 
Census US 1900*5 June 1900Jennie Weir was enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 5 June 1900 at 706 East 143rd Street, Bronx, New York City, Bronx County, New York. She was 43 years of age, a widow, and had given birth to three children, only one of whom was living. She rented her home, was able to read, write and to speak English, and had no occupation reported. Her son, Charles, was enumerated with her in 1900. He was single, 22 years of age, able to read, write and to speak English, and had no occupation reported.2 
(Mother) Death7 May 1901Her son, Charles, died from pulmonary tuberculosis at age 23, on 7 May 1901, in the home they shared at Bronx, New York City, Bronx County, New York.14,15 
Death*28 October 1901She died on 28 October 1901 in her home at 706 East 143rd Street, Bronx, New York City, at age 45. The cause of her death was recorded as a hemorrhage resulting from a 32-caliiber pistol shot wound entering her chest and passing through her liver.16 
Burial*She was buried in Section: 1 Plot: 4 Grave: 4, of Evergreen Cemetery, Morristown, Morris County, New Jersey.17 
Research Notes* Sadly, during the 15 years between 1886 and 1901, all five members of the Zachary Taylor and Virginia M. (Heaton) Weir family passed away. Their daughter, Clara Louise, who was just 10 years old, died in 1886. Husband and father, Zachary, and son, Wallace, both died in 1898, Zachary in March and Wallace, who had a wife and child, in October. Charles died in May of 1901 and wife and mother Virginia, by then a widow and childless, died in October of 1901. Little Clara Louise was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York City, and all the other members of the family, who passed away after Clara, were buried together in the same Section and Plot# of Evergreen Cemetery in Morristown, New Jersey. Death Certificate information, which included a cause of death, was found for Wallace, Charles, and their mother, Virginia, so we know that both Wallace and Charles died from different variations of tuberculosis, and that their mother died from a gun-shot wound to her chest. We haven't learned the causes of the deaths of Clara Louise or her father, Zachary, although we wonder if, they too, had tuberculosis.15

Warren was 36 years of age and a manager, and Marie was 35 years of age. They owned their home which was valued at $12,000, and also owned a radio set. Their three children were enumerated with them in 1930. Betty V. was 11 years old and attending school; Warren W. Jr. was 9 and also attending school; and Robert M. was 5 years old. Also enumerated with the Heaton household in 1930 was Ella Tolbert, who was a widow, Black, 52 years of age, and worked for the family as a servant.8 
(Husband) Death1 January 1948Warren became a widower when Marie T. Heaton died on 1 January 1948 at age 52.6

Brick Wall Solved*Washington Heaton has challenged researchers for many years. Who was he?... The story his descendants learned was that Washington's father's name was John Heaton, a soldier serving in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington when his son was born on 11 September 1777 -- and that Washington Heaton earned his name because of his father's admiration for the General. In his Heaton Families II, Dean Heaton wrote that Washington was "very likely" the son of Colonel John Heaton "either by an earlier marriage or born out of wedlock." No explanation for the statement was provided, and some of Washington's descendants who have remained skeptical talked to other Heaton researchers, and together we decided to try and learn which John Heaton really was Washington Heaton's father.

We had previously researched only nine John Heatons, yet not with Washington in mind, so we began with those nine, which included the "very likely" Colonel John Heaton. We were able to eliminate all nine fairly quickly. Regarding the "very likely" John Heaton, as we learned more about how committed he was to his family, we believed that if he had been Washington's father, we would have found some evidence or record of their involvement in something together -- or at least have found them in the same location once or twice. We also believe Washington would have been included in the Heaton family Bible records kept by Colonel John's daughter Charlotte (Heaton) Black. Howard Leckey's The Tenmile Country, wrote about the Bible which did not include a son named Washington, however did mention a daughter born to Colonel John's wife by her previous marriage, and who was raised by Colonel John. We decided at that point that Colonel John was not the father we were looking for, and also decided to extend our search and research to include as many other John Heatons as we could find until we found the John Heaton that felt "right". We added 453 new people to our Heaton Project, found sixteen "new" John Heatons and researched them enough to eliminate all but four of them.

Our best candidates were John Heaton, John Heaton, John Heaton and John Heaton -- and then we knew! John Heaton must have been Washington Heaton's father -- at least until some new information proves us wrong.3,4,5 
Birth*11 September 1777Washington Heaton was born on 11 September 1777 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, which would become part of the newly formed Washington County in 1781. We note here also that on the 1900 census Washington's daughter Phoebe Packwood's enumerator reported her father's birthplace as Maryland and on Phoebe's 1903 death certificate, Phoebe's son Jesse reported his grandfather Washington Heaton's birthplace as Pennsylvania.6,7,8 
Research Notes1790One of our early tasks as we searched for Washington's father was to organize and group the several Heaton families in Washington County, Pennsylvania, using the 1790 census. This was our list of Heaton Heads of Households in 1790: Daniel Heaton, David Heaton, Ebenezer Heaton, Henry Heaton, Isaac Heaton, Isaac Heaton, John Heaton, William Heaton, Jonah Heaton, John Heaton, Miles Heaton and John Heaton. The names of heads of household on the census taken in the county that year were not later alphabetized so it's possible to get a feel for relatives and other neighbors who probably lived nearby. On page 170, Daniel Heaton is near the top of the census page, and his son David is across from him on page 171. William Heaton is next to David. Near the bottom of page 170, Isaac Heaton is listed between his sons John and Henry. Jonah "Eaton" appears a short distance above them on the same page. John Heaton and William "Eaton" appear near the top and bottom of page 159, another Isaac Heaton is on page 160, Miles Heaton on page 169, John "Hitton" on page 183, Ebenezer Heaton on page 192 and another John Heaton on page 199. In 1790, Washington Heaton was only 13 years old and lived with his parents.9,10,11,12,13,14 
Research Notes1800The earliest record we found for Washington Heaton was his appearance on the 1800 census in Washington County. Enumeration of Heads of Households on the census that year, for each county, was taken by location within the county, so we were able to see more specifically where the various Heaton families lived and their proximity to each other. Eight Heaton heads of household were enumerated that year in Washington County and five, including Washington, were in East Bethlehem: Washington Heaton, Henry Heaton, John Heaton Sr., John Heaton Jr. and James Heaton. The remaining three Heaton families each lived in separate places: Myles Haidan, who had been enumerated as Miles HEATON in 1790, was in West Bethlehem, John Heaton was in Morris Township, and Thomas Heaton was in Somerset. Our challenge, as we identified it, was to find out who each of these people were in the hopes of finding a connection to Washington or, even better, a father or brother. At the very least we needed one or more clues to pursue. It was wonderful when we discovered that Thomas Heaton of Somerset turned out to hold the ultimate clue we'd been looking for.

Robert Clarke, John Clarke and John Clarke, whom we suspected might turn out to be related to Washington's wife Phoebe, were also enumerated in 1800 in East Bethlehem.15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24 
Census US 1800*1800Washington appeared on the 1800 census in East Bethlehem, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of three people: one male age 16 thru 25, whom we believe was Washington, one female age 16 thru 25, possibly his wife Phoebe, and one female under 10. We note that other researchers have reported that 1802 was the year of Washington's marriage to Phoebe, so this may be a first wife and child, or a learning that Washington and Phoebe married before the census was taken in 1800.15 
Marriage*1802He married Phoebe Clark, daughter of Robert Clarke and Hannah Halbeck, in 1802 in Washington County, Pennsylvania.6 
Loan Agreement*14 April 1808 On 14 April 1808 Washington Heaton made a loan of $15.50 to his brother Thomas Heaton during his last sickness for the purpose of discharging his bills. Administration documents show that Washington's loan was needed immediately for $5 for a doctor and $10 for burial expenses.2 
(Brother) Administration16 May 1808Items from the inventory of the goods and chattels of the estate of Thomas Heaton late of the township of Somerset, Washington County, that were sold on 16 May 1808 reached a total of $764.15 and a list, including purchasers, items purchased and their values, was included in the administration packet. Many individuals made purchases, including Thomas' widow Martha Heaton and two of his brothers, James Heaton and Washington Heaton.

Washington purchased 1 pair of tongs for $1.60, 1 skillet for $.40, 1 hive of bees for $2.31, a second hive of bees for $2.25, 1 shovel for $1.05, and a case of razors for $.25.2 
Administration*27 February 1809 On 27 February 1809, Washington received $15.76 as payment in full for his final loan to his brother Thomas Heaton deceased from Martha Heaton, as administrator of her late husband's estate.2 
Research Notes1810There were five Heaton heads of household and four Clarke heads of household listed on the census taken in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1810. Washington Heaton was the only Heaton enumerated in the township of Pike Run, not far from East Bethlehem, where Barbara Heaton, widow of James, John Heaton, Ebenezer Heaton, John Clarke, James Clarke and Hannah (Halbeck) Clarke, Robert Clarke's widow and Phoebe (Clarke) Heaton's mother, all lived in 1810. John Clarke was in Somerset, John Heaton was still in Morris Township, and Henry Heaton had moved to Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Of special interest to us was that Barbara Heaton, John Clarke, Hannah Clarke and James Clarke were all enumerated on the same page, the names were not listed alphabetically, and Hannah was next to and between John Clarke and James Clarke.25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34 
Census US 1810*1810Washington appeared on the 1810 census in Pike Run, Washington County, Pennsylvania. The household had grown to a total of 8 people in 1810 and consisted of one male and one female each age 26 thru 44, whom we believe to be Washington and Phoebe, one female age 16 thru 25, one female age 10 thru 15 and four females under 10.25 
(Brother) Administration29 February 1812The final accounting for the estate of Thomas Heaton, dated 29 February 1812, reported a zero balance after a total amount of $1,848.62 in credits and debits. The itemized list of those who had received disbursements included two of Thomas's brothers, John Heaton and Washington Heaton. The document submitted and registered by the court in Washington County was signed by Martha Hardgrove and Duncan Campbell, administrators, and Isaac Kerr, Register. Washington had received $15.46 "for proven account and receipt" and Robert Clarke's name appeared next after Washington's on the disbursement list.2 
Relocation*1818Phoebe and Washington moved with their family in 1818 to a farm near Borden, Clark County, Indiana.35 
Census US 1820*1820Washington appeared on the 1820 census as the Head of Household in Washington County, Indiana. The household consisted of 10 people: one male age 45 and over and one female age 26 thru 44, who were probably Washington and his wife Phoebe, one male age 26 thru 44, four females age 10 thru 15, 2 females under 10 and one male under 10. Two people were engaged in agriculture.36 
(Husband) Death1823Washington became a widower when Phoebe (Clark) Heaton died in 1823.37

Weaver's household contained more people than his own family, and one wonders who the others were. Weaver, himself, was likely the one male between the ages of 30 through 39 and his wife Rebecca was likely the one female between the ages of 20 through 29. Their two children, Emaline and James, would be the one male and one female under 5. That leaves one male ages 60 through 69, two males ages 20 through 29 and two females ages 15 through 19 unaccounted for.10

Weaver was 40 years old, and his occupation was millwright. There was nothing shown for the value of his real estate. Rebecca was age 34, and living with the couple were their six children. Emaline was 14, James 12, Rachel 9, Eliza 7, Henry 4 and William 2. John H. Sharp, who was age 19 and had attended school within the year, also resided with the family. Although he has not yet been identified, he is thought to have probably been a relative of Weaver's wife, Rebecca. All members of the household had been born in Pennsylvania. Enumerated in the next household was Rebecca's sister Rachel with her husband, Joel Grabill.14 
RelocationSometime between the dates of the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Weaver and Rebecca Heaton moved to Greenfield, Washington County, Pennsylvania, a community which later became Coal Center.4,11,12

Weaver's age was 49, he was a millwright and the value of his real estate was shown as $700 and of his personal estate as $200. They lived with their children. James was age 21 and working as a ship carpenter. Rachel was 18, Eliza 17, Henry 14, William 11, and twins George and Ella, who were 8 years of age.15 
Census US 1870*21 June 1870Weaver and Rebecca Heaton appeared on the 1870 census taken on 21 June 1870 in the borough of New Haven, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Weaver was age 60, a millwright, and the estimated value of his personal estate was $400. Rebecca was age 55, and keeping house. Three of their children were still living in the household. William was 22 years of age and working in a sash factory, George was 18 years of age, had attended school within the year and was also working in a sash factory, Ella was age 18 and had not attended school within the year. Rebecca's mother, Eliza A. Sharp, who was 73 years of age with real estate valued at $500, also lived with the family.16 
(Brother-in-Law) Census US 187029 July 1870Their son Henry appeared on the 1870 census taken on 29 July 1870 in the household of her brother and his wife, John and Ann Sharp, in Taylor, Appanoose County, Iowa. Henry was 24 years old and working as a carpenter. Also living in the household were eight of her brother's children, ranging in age from 26 to 8 years.17,18 
Relocation*In the early 1870s, Weaver and Rebecca moved to Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.4
