Della was identified as the adopted daughter of the Doerfers, and Ray as the couple's son-in-law. Della's biological father was reported to have been born in the Irish Free State, and her biological mother in Ohio. Her father's birth place, which in previous censuses had been consistently reported as Ohio, has become our first clue to Della M. Diehl's birth parents.7
