Marriage License15 December 1934A marriage license was issued on 15 December 1934 in Yuma County, Arizona, to Joseph A. Snyder, age 25, a resident of Los Angeles, California and a native of Washington, and Vera Welcome, age 21, a resident of Downey, California and a native of California.7

Residence*1 April 1935On the 1940 census, Vera reported she had lived in Phoenix, Arizona, on 1 April 1935.10
Divorce*Vera and Joseph A. Snyder separated, and were probably divorced, very soon after their marriage. On the 1940 census, Vera reported she had lived in Phoenix, Arizona on 1 April 1935, and Joseph, who was enumerated in San Francisco, California, in 1940, reported on the census that year that he had live in Los Angeles, California on 1 April 1935. Vera probably married her second husband before October 1935 when she gave birth to a daughter whose birth registration recorded her surname as STEVENS, the surname of Vera's second husband. Joseph married his second wife in November 1939.10,11,12
Marriage*She married second, as his first wife, James Emery Stevens Jr., son of James E. Stevens and Edith M. Whitaker.13
(Mother) Research NotesThe birth registration for Emajean Stevens, who was born on 12 October 1935 in San Diego County, California, recorded her surname as STEVENS, and James Emery Stevens Jr. certainly raised her as his daughter. Her conception, however, probably occurred in January 1935, about a month after her mother, Vera Dowis Welcome's, marriage to Joseph A. Snyder, whom we suspect was likely Emajean's biological father.14,10
Census US 1940*8 April 1940Vera E. and James E. Stevens Jr. were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 8 April 1940 at 822 E. 5th Street, National City, San Diego County, California. James was 26 years of age and worked for wages as a clerk in a privately owned retail grocery store, and Vera was 24 years of age and worked doing her home housework. James had completed his education through the 1st year of College, and Vera had completed her education through the 2nd year of College. James had worked 60 hours the week before the census was taken, and 52 weeks, for an income of $1,300, in 1939. They owned their house, which was valued at $1,500, and was not on a farm. On 1 April 1935, James had lived in National City, California, and Vera had lived in Phoenix, Arizona. Three children were enumerated with the couple in 1940. Their daughters, Emajean and Verna Merle, were ages 4 and 2 years, respectively, and their son, James III, was one year old.10
(Sister) Draft Registration16 October 1940When her brother, David Donald Dowis, completed his World War II Draft Registration Card on 16 October 1940 in National City, San Diego County, California, he was living with her in National City at 822 E. 5th.15
Residence*1941James E. Stevens Jr., a clerk at the A & P Tea Company, and Vera, were listed at 822 E. 5th Street, National City, in the City Directory for San Diego County, California, for the year 1941.16,17,18,19
Divorce*Vera and James E. Stevens separated, and were probably divorced shortly after the birth of their daughter, Penny. Vera moved away, leaving all of the children with James.20
Marriage*8 October 1960She married third, as his first wife, Joy A. Andersen, son of Anders Andersen and Else Marie Olsen, on 8 October 1960 in San Diego County, California. Their marriage was indexed twice, once with her maiden name of Welcome, and once with her previous married name of Stevens.21,22,1
Divorce*Vera and Joy A. Andersen were divorced, although we don't know how long after their marriage. Joy married a second time in 1986.23

Residence*1808James lived in Cashel, County Meath, Ireland, in 1808.1
(Trustee) Marriage Settlement1 March 1808A memorial of an indented deed of marriage settlement dated 1 March 1808 was made between John Gerrard of Chamberstown, County Meath, gentleman, of the one part and James Russell of Cashel, County Meath and James Weldon of the same place, gentlemen, trustees in said settlement. The deed recited the marriage of the said John Gerrard with Elinor Gerrard, otherwise Russell, daughter of the said James Russell, with whom she received a marriage portion of £200.

Said deed witnessed that the said John Gerrard, in consideration of the said marriage and the said marriage portion, had executed his bond in warrant of attorney, for confessing judgment thereon, bearing equal date with said deed, for the penal sum of £1,000 for the payment of £500 to be levied off the goods and chattels of the said John Gerrard and handed to the said Elinor in case she should survive him or, in his life time, he might fail in his circumstances. And if issue of said marriage, then one-third part to go to her, and the other two-thirds to such issue. But if neither of such events should happen, then the said bond and warrant to be null and void. And for further securing said sum of £500 upon the contingencies therein, said John Gerrard did encumber that part of the lands of Chamberstown, in the parish of Rathkenny, barony of Navan and county of Meath, devised unto him by his late father John Gerrard, deceased, with liberty to the said trustees to sell his interest therein upon the contingencies aforesaid, not otherwise.

The deed was witnessed by Laurence Brennan of the town of Drogheda, scrivener, and John Gerrard's brother, Edward Gerrard, and the memorial was witnessed by the said Laurence Brennan and John McCudden of the town of Drogheda, weaver. The deed was duly executed, signed and sealed by the parties, John Gerrard, James Russell and James Weldon, and the memorial was registered on 22 November 1809.1
