Although she only had three surviving sons, her obituary named five, William E. Freet of Marion, Indiana, and Ray Freet of Ocala, Florida, her two surviving sons from her first marriage, and Roger Covey of Marion, Indiana, her son from her second marriage. Identified incorrectly as her sons were Bob Sailors and Don Sailors of New Port Richey, Florida and Gaithersburg, Maryland, respectively, who were actually her nephews, the sons of Lucy's deceased brother, Chester Earl Sailors. Listed as a daughter, Mrs. Faye Miller of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was actually a niece, a daughter of Lucy's deceased brother, Chester Earl Sailors. Also included were one stepdaughter, Mrs. Beatrice Hueston, of Tucson, Arizona, and a one stepson, Woodrow Covey, of Falls River, Massachusetts, both children of her deceased second husband, Roy Roger Covey, from his first marriage. And mentioned, although not named, were 26 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.10

We've not been able to identify Lucy on the 1930 census, and her former husband, her children's father, Carl Edward Freet, was enumerated in 1930 in the household of Lucy's brother, Leo Waldren Hale, in Gary, Lake County, Indiana.17 
Marriage*1938She married second, as his third wife, Roy R. Covey, son of William Covey and Annie C. Schultz, about 1938. Lucy had three young sons from her first marriage, Raymond, Fred and William Freet, who were aged about 15, 13 and 10 years, respectively; and Roy had four children from his first marriage. His two older daughters, Bessie and Beatrice (Covey) Hueston, were ages 28 and 23 years, respectively. Beatrice was married and Bessie would marry for the first time in 1940. Roy's two younger children, a son Woodrow and a daughter Doris, were ages 20 and 18 years, respectively, and both were single.2,18

Freet of Marion, Indiana, and Ray Freet of Ocala, Florida, her two surviving sons from her first marriage, and Roger Covey of Marion, Indiana, her son from her second marriage. Identified incorrectly as her sons were Bob Sailors and Don Sailors of New Port Richey, Florida and Gaithersburg, Maryland, respectively, who were actually her nephews, the sons of Lucy's deceased brother, Chester Earl Sailors. Listed as a daughter, Mrs. Faye Miller of Fort Wayne, Indiana, was actually a niece, a daughter of Lucy's deceased brother, Chester Earl Sailors. Also included were one stepdaughter, Mrs. Beatrice Hueston, of Tucson, Arizona, and a one stepson, Woodrow Covey, of Falls River, Massachusetts, both children of her deceased second husband, Roy Roger Covey, from his first marriage. And mentioned, although not named, were 26 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren2

Friday night Officer Marsh found Saylors in an intoxicated condition and placed him in jail. Oscar was charged with Intoxication when arraigned in city court Saturday morning. He pleaded guilty and was fined $5 plus costs, and was to remain in jail for fifteen days in default of payment.6 
Divorce Filing*24 June 1908His wife, Florence Sailors, filed for divorce from Oscar in Grant County Circuit Court about 24 June 1908. She asked for the custody of their three children, Clarence, age twelve, Chester, age six and Everett, age three, alleging that her husband has a notable police record and that he spends all his money for intoxicating liquor and that she is compelled to support herself and her children.16,17

Research Notes*We wonder if Florence was aware she was pregnant at the time she was granted her divorce from Oscar. Her baby daughter was born in January of 1909, six months after her divorce was final in July of 1908. On the one hand, she only requested child support for her four sons who were alive at the time; and on the other hand, she had experienced other pregnancies and, even at only three months, she may have recognized the symptoms, feelings or changes in her body. It's a question we will likely never have an answer to.3,18 
Census US 1910*15 April 1910Oscar Sailors, his surname spelled "Saylors" by the census taker, was enumerated as a Prisoner on the 1910 census taken on 15 April 1910 in the Grant County Jail, Center, Grant County, Indiana. He was 37 years of age, Divorced, able to read, write and speak English, and his occupation was working for wages as a Painter. He was out of work, and had been without work for 15 weeks in 1909.19 
(Father) Death21 May 1916His son, Lester Saylors, died from pulmonary tuberculosis on 21 May 1916 at the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital, Adams, Parke County, Indiana, at age 14.20,21

He worked as a Painter in the Contracting business on his own account, and had not been at work the last working day before the census was taken.24 
Death*3 May 1930 On 3 May 1930, at age 57, about a month after his enumeration on the 1930 census, Oscar died from tabes dorsalis in his lodgings at 1009 N. Branson Street, Marion,10

Civil War (U.S.)*During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army as a Private in Company F of the 2nd Indiana Cavalry. Following his death, The Marion Leader newspaper of Marion, Indiana published an article about his experiences in the war. What follows is our own transcription of much of the newspaper's story:

Under the headline, "William Sailors' War Experience", the narrative described William Sailors as a man who fought valiantly during the Civil War and suffered as few men have suffered. He had died at the Soldiers Home in Marion, Grant County, Indiana, and was buried in the Home cemetery. Military honors were paid the man who had sacrificed so much for his native land. For years, Mr. Sailors had been a prominent resident of Liberty township in Wabash County, and about one year ago he went to the Soldiers' Home at Marion, for his suffering had become such that he could better receive attention at the Home. He was a member of the G.A.R. in good standing, and was interested in the work of the post. When he could be present, he usually attended. He was born in Rush County on May 2, 1841 and removed to Wabash County with his parents when but a boy. He continued to live in Wabash County and was a farmer until his failing health made him give up his work.

He was a member of the Second Indiana Cavalry and was wounded at Barnett station, Georgia, being shot entirely through the body. He was left for dead on the battle field, not only by his soldiers, but the Confederates, who were following and passed over the field. He was later found by two women who carried him to a veranda of an adjacent house and left him to die, first placing a knapsack beneath his head. When the Confederates returned, they found him, and made him a prisoner. This was after he had remained, almost dying, for twenty-four hours. The first thing done was to pass a silk handkerchief through his body along the course taken by the bullet. He lay in a hospital at Atlanta, Georgia for one month, then, still feeble, he was taken to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. He was there a month before he made his escape with three companions. He was overtaken by bloodhounds and southern soldiers, and was returned to the prison and kept in irons for one week. From Andersonville, he was removed to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia, where he remained for eight months before being exchanged. His record through the army was a noble one, although he never recovered from that shot through his body. Since then, he has always suffered, and these sufferings ended in his death late on a Monday evening.6,7

(Husband) Deathafter 1 June 1870William became a widower when Mary E. (Sailors) Sailors died at about age 22, after 1 June 1870, the official date of the 1870 census, and before the date William married a second time on 10 October 1870. Willaim's household wasn't enumerated until August of 1870 and, even though Mary had died after June 1, she would still have been enumerated as a member of the household as of June 1 on the census. Her death left her husband with two very young sons, a 2-year-old and an infant.10,11

Joshua was 2 years old and Omer, who was recorded as "Homer", was one year old.10

William was 38 years of age and Farming, and Mary was 34 years of age and Keeping House. Three children were enumerated with them in 1880. Joshua and Omer, William's sons with his first wife, were ages 12 and 10 years, respectively, and Joshua had attended school within the census year. Oscar, the son of William and Mary, was 8 years old.1

Rexford was 16 years old; Wilhelmina and Elaine were age 13; and John W. Jr. was 8 years old.5 
(Wife) Death20 January 1933Laura became a widow when John W. Holt died on 20 January 1933 at age 48.6 
(Mother) Arrested and Charged13 November 1938Her son, Rex, 24, and L. L. Powell, 25, both residents of Cisco, were arrested on 13 November 1938 in Fort Worth, Texas, and charged with automobile theft and armed robbery of a service station. A third man, Pete Eudy, who had left the car a few minutes before Powell and Holt were arrested, later surrendered to police. The two men initially in custody readily admitted their part in the robbery, blaming whisky for their complicity. The men had stolen the car in Cisco, Eastland County, Texas and driven it to Stamford, in Jones County, Texas where they committed the robbery, then were apprehended with the car in Fort Worth.7,8,9,10,11 
(Mother) Criminal Conviction2 May 1939Her son was the second man to go on trial in connection with the Stamford service station holdup on 13 November 1938. His trial began on Tuesday morning, 2 May 1939 in District Court, Anson, Jones County, Texas, with jury selection completed at noon. Testimony was presented during the afternoon, and attorneys' arguments were heard the following morning. Unfortunately, we did not find information in the newspapers about what the jury heard at his trial. We did learn, however, that they returned with their verdict after 30 minutes, found Holt guilty in connection with the holdup, and sentenced him to five years in state prison for armed robbery. At the time of Holt's conviction, the first of his accomplices to go on trial, J. M. Eudy, had already been convicted of the same crime. Eudy had also been sentenced to five years in state prison and had begun serving his sentence in April. The trial of the third man, L. L. Powell, was scheduled to begin the following day.7,8,9,10,11 
(Sister) Census US 19408 April 1940Laura was enumerated with her son Walter on the 1940 census taken on 8 April 1940 in the household of her sister, Lucille Salters, at 1306 Peabody Street, Dallas, Dallas County, Texas. Laura was 45 years of age, widowed, had completed her education through the 7th grade of elementary school, and worked at home doing the housework. Her son Walter was 19 years old, had completed his education through the first year of high school and had attended school within the census year. All three members of the household had lived in the same place in 1935.12
