Ermenilda Wright, age 22 and a sister of Thomas's deceased wife, was working in the home as a governess and was also enumerated with the Michael family in 1871, as was Melinda Dodge, age 30, who worked as a general domestic servant.10

Census England 1881*3 April 1881Sarah and Thomas Michael were enumerated on the 1881 census taken as of the night of 3 April 1881 at 27 Hampden Place, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Thomas was 53 years of age and a Baptist Minister, and Sarah was 55 years of age. Two of Thomas's children and one of Sarah's resided in the Michael household in 1881. Fred H. Michael was 16 years old and an art student pupil and his sister Ethilda M. Michael was 13 years old and a scholar. Sarah's son, Henry C. Notcutt, was 16 years old and a pupil teacher, which may have meant he was a tutor. Also enumerated in the Michael household in 1881 was Thomas's sister, Hannah (Michael) Saunders, who was 51 years of age, married, and an assistant housekeeper. The final person enumerated with the family that year was Mary A. Watson, age 19, who worked as a general servant.11 
Occupation*1884Thomas Michael was a well-respected Baptist Minister. He was first educated in his native town of Abergavenny, Wales, and in 1853 entered Pontypool College where he remained for three years. In 1856, he undertook his first pastorate at the Mill Street chapel in Evesham, Worcestershire, England, and in 1861 removed to the Pellon Lane church in Halifax, Yorkshire, a pastorate he held for 23 years. In 1882 he was elected president of the Yorkshire Association of Baptist Churches. He took an active part in the public affairs of the town and, side by side with Dr. Mellor, fought many a battle in the cause of liberty of conscience. In 1884, he resigned his pastorate, and spent the remaining years of his life in London.5

He was 63 years of age and a retired Baptist Minister.3
