Relationship Note*Thomas Jefferson Priest's relationship to the Priest family is uncertain to us. He was enumerated on the 1850 census in the household of Thomas Priest (1786 - ), whose wife we have not identified. He was recorded that year as Jefferson Priest, was 29 years of age and married with one son. He and his family were listed by the census taker after Thomas's daughter-in-law, Phoebe Priest, and her five children. Phoebe's husband, Thomas Priest (1805- ), was a son of Thomas Priest (1786- ) and identified at the time of their marriage as Thomas Priest Jr. It is doubtful to us that the elder Thomas Priest (1786- ) would have named two sons Thomas while both boys were living. It is clear to us that Thomas Jefferson Priest was not the son of Phoebe and Thomas Priest Jr. (1805- ) because they didn't marry until 1826 and Thomas Jefferson's year of birth has been recorded, by different sources, as between 1816 and 1821. He could have been the son of Thomas Jr. (1805- ) and an earlier wife or relationship, however that seems unlikely to us also, as Thomas Jr. would have been a young teenager at Jefferson's birth -- and we still run into the same issue of two sons named Thomas. We definitely have too many Priests named Thomas! Our "best guess" at his point is that Thomas Jefferson Priest was a nephew or other relative of Thomas Priest (1786-.2,3,4 )

He was 64 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $5,000. His daughter-in-law, Phoebe Ann (Urton) Priest, widow of his son Thomas Jr., was enumerated with her children in her father-in-law's household in 1850, as was Jefferson Priest with his wife and son. Phoebe Priest was 45 years of age, and her five children ranged in age from 19 years to 9 months. Anna E. was 19 years old; Thomas W. was 16 years old, worked as a laborer, and had also attended school within the census year; Warren and Preston were ages 15 and 12, respectively, and had both also attended school within the census year; and baby Mary W. was 9 months old. Jefferson Priest was 29 years of age and a school teacher; his wife Amelia was age 26 and their young son, Theodore, was one year old.1 
Census US 1860*11 August 1860Thomas Priest was enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 11 August 1860 in Clay, Ralls County, Missouri. He was 74 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $16,000 and a personal estate valued at $13,200. Three of his grandchildren, children of his son and daughter-in-law, Phoebe and Thomas Priest Jr., were enumerated with him in 1860. Thomas W. and Preston Priest were ages 26 and 23, respectively, and both were farmers with their grandfather; and Mary W. Priest was 11 years old and had attended school within the census year.5

His youngest daughter, Mary, was 19 years old and keeping house; his son Preston was 32 years of age and a farmer with a personal estate valued at $600; and his daughter, Annie E. Hawkins, was 40 years of age. Anna's six children ranged in age from 16 to 5: Ella, Ann, Georgia, Alice and Sallie Hawkins were age 16, 14, 12, 10 and 7 years old, respectively, and all had attended school within the census year; and Thomas Hawkins was 5 years old.2

William was 52 years of age and worked as a plumber for contractors and had employees. Nora was age 50 and they rented their house. Six children were enumerated with the couple in 1920. Bertie Harper, Nora's son from her second marriage, was recorded as Bertie Prior. He was 13 years old and had attended school within the census year. Bertie was an infant when his parents divorced, and he was raised by his stepfather, William S. Prior, as his own son. Bertie was known as Bert Prior for the rest of his life. Pearl, William and Paul Prior, the couple's biological children, were ages 9, 8 and 6 years, respectively. Pearl and William had attended school within the census year. The ages of the two older boys, Dillard Anderson and Welland Prior, were not recorded by the census taker. We know, however, that Nora's son, Dillard Anderson, from her first marriage, and William's son, Welland Prior, from his first marriage, were each 22 years of age. They were both working for wages as farm laborers. Everyone in the Prior household spoke English, and all except 6-year-old Paul, were able to read and write.9
