Name VariationHer full name was Hannah Rebecca Smith.5
(Daughter) Census US 185027 August 1850Hannah was enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 27 August 1850 in the household of her parents in Jackson, Gentry County, Missouri. She was 3 years old.4
Marriage*1865She married Thomas J. Chapman about 1865.1,2,6,5
Census US 1870*27 August 1870Hannah R. and Thomas J. Chapman were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 27 August 1870 in Wilson Township, Gentry County, Missouri. Thomas was 32 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $600, and Hannah was 24 years of age, could read and not write, and was keeping house. Three children were enumerated with them in 1870. Robert P. was 4 years old; William E. was age 3; and Thomas was one year old. Hannah's mother, Thursey (Means) Smith, whom we suspect had been widowed, was enumerated with Hannah's two youngest siblings two households below the Chapman's in 1870.7
Census US 1880*16 June 1880Hannah R. and Thomas J. Chapman were enumerated on the 1880 census taken on 16 June 1880 in Wilson Township, Gentry County, Missouri. Thomas was 39 years of age and a farmer, and Hannah was 34 years of age and was not able to write, although she could read. They were enumerated with their nine children in 1880. Robert P. was 14 years old, able to both read and write and had attended school within the census year. His occupation was recorded as at home. William E. and Thomas H. were ages 12 and 11 years, respectively. They were unable to write, although both could read, and had attended school within the census year. James W., Julia A. and Amos A., were ages 9, 7 and 6 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year; John S. and George W. were ages 4 and 2 years, respectively; and baby Minnie B. was nine months old.1
Census US 1900*23 June 1900Hannah and Thomas J. Chapman were enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 23 June 1900 in Wilson Township, Gentry County, Missouri. Thomas was 61 years of age and a farmer, and Hannah was 53 years of age. They owned their farm with a mortgage, had been married for 38 years, and Hannah had given birth to ten children, eight of whom were living. Their youngest son, Matthew M., was enumerated with them in 1900. He was 16 years old, was able to both read and write, had attended school for six months of the census year and worked as a laborer on the family farm when not in school. William C. Smith, was also enumerated in the Chapman household in 1900. He was 46 years of age, single, and worked as a laborer on the farm. No relationship to Hannah was identified, and it's possible there was none and he was "just another Smith."8
(Wife) Death3 June 1921Hannah became a widow when Thomas J. Chapman died on 3 June 1921 at age 82.6
Death*19 February 1934She died of chronic valvular heart disease on 19 February 1934 in Alanthus Grove, Gentry County, Missouri, at age 875,3,2
Burial* and was buried with her husband in Jennings Cemetery, Alanthus Grove.5,6
Family Photo*This wonderful photo of the family of Thomas Jefferson Chapman and Hannah Rebecca (Smith) Chapman of Gentry County, Missouri, was shared originally by Roxanne Held on 15 March 2022 when she posted it to her Ancestry Tree. We estimate the date of the photo as about 1895, before the death that year of the couple's fourth son, James Woodson Chapman. Their younger daughter, Minnie B. Chapman, who is not in the photo, was likely deceased as we have found no evidence of her after her enumeration with her parents and siblings in the 1880 census. And the couple's second son, William Edmond Chapman, is missing from the photo and we don't know why. He was not deceased; he was enumerated with his wife and son on the 1900 census in Wilson Township, Gentry County, Missouri and he, with his family, relocated to Oklahoma in 1901. We wonder if he was away on a future relocation scouting-trip when the photo was taken.9,10,1,11

Marriage*5 November 1754He married Agnes Bolton on 5 November 1754 in Palmer, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England).1,2
Research Notes*It is unclear if there were two daughters named Mary born to Hugh and Agnes Smith in Palmer, Hampshire County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England). In the records for Palmer, two births are listed with identical birth dates and different years, 1765 and 1767. The 1765 date was noted as appearing on her grave stone and the 1767 date appears to have been transcribed from the original record. To further confuse the issue, two death dates are listed also. The one appearing to have been transcribed from the town records reports her death on 30 Jul 1767 and the other, obtained from her grave stone in Old Center Cemetery was noted as 20 Sep 1768, age 10 (or age 1 followed by an O and not a zero.)2
(Husband) Death27 September 1768Hugh became a widower when Agnes Smith died on 27 September 1768, the same day she gave birth to John. She was only 33.3,2

Relationship Note*Jane Smith and Thomas Smith are believed to have been siblings who married siblings.
Marriage License1789A marriage license bond was issued to Jane Smith and Walter Hinds in Diocese of Meath, County Meath, Ireland, on 1789.2
Marriage*circa 1789Jane Smith married Walter Hinds, son of Ralph Hinds and Esther Cannon, circa 1789 in the Meath Diocese, County Meath, Ireland.3,4
(Wife) Death27 March 1804Jane became a widow when Walter Hinds Esq. of Corrakane died on or about 27 March 1804.4
(Mother) ResidenceJane (Smith) Hinds lived with her son and daughter, Walter Hinds Esq. and Mary Anne Martha Hinds, at Portland Place, Dublin, at the time her daughter's marriage settlement was signed in September 1817.5
(Mother) Marriage Settlement15 September 1817 On 15 September 1817 James Ellis of Summerhill, County Meath, and his bride-to-be, Mary Anne Martha Hinds, spinster of Portland Place in the City and County of Dublin, were participants in a Memorial Deed of Marriage Settlement agreement. Others participating in the settlement included Jane Hinds of Portland Place, Dublin, a widow and the mother of Mary Anne Martha Hinds, Walter Thomas Hinds Esq., also of Portland Place, Dublin, the son of Jane Hinds and brother of Mary Anne Martha Hinds and William Smith Esq. of Laracor in the County of Meath.

The Memorial deed recited that a marriage had been agreed upon and was soon intended to occur between James Ellis and Mary Anne Martha Hinds and that James Ellis was entitled under the will of his uncle John Cade late of Leadenhall Street in the City of London, a Merchant deceased, to the sum of £700 payable upon the death of his mother, Mary Cade, otherwise Ellis, and that that sum was at that time invested at 4 percent compounding in the Bank of Ireland in the name of John Robinson of Leadenhall Street, a Merchant, as a Trustee for James and his mother. It further recited that Jane Hinds, the mother of Mary Anne Martha Hinds, had agreed to give her daughter a fortune of £500 and that it had been agreed by James Ellis, Mary Anne Martha Hinds and Jane Hinds upon the surety of the intended marriage that the sum of £700 should be assigned to and vested with Walter Thomas Hinds Esq. and William Smith Esq. and that the sum of £500 should be paid to Walter Thomas Hinds and William Smith as Trustees for the specific intents and purposes outlined in the agreement.

James Ellis, in consideration of the marriage, had agreed that Mary Anne Martha Hinds, in case she should survive him after their marriage had been solemnized, should have, hold and enjoy during the term of her natural life all the Estate, Real, freehold and personal, he owned or was entitled to at the time of his death. Jane Hinds, with the agreement of James Ellis, had already paid to Walter Thomas Hinds and William Smith, as Trustees, her portion of £500 and it was therefore established that James Ellis and Jane Hinds had each vested their sums of £700 and £500 with the Trustees for the following Trusts: the sum of £700 in Trust for James Ellis, his Executors, Administrators and assigns until the said intended marriage should be duly had and solemnized; and the sum of £500 held in trust for Jane Hinds, her Executors, Administrators and assigns until the intended marriage should be dully had and solemnized. Then, from and immediately after the solemnization of the intended marriage, the two sums of £700 and £500, with Walter Thomas Hinds and William Smith as Trustees, and the survivor of them, and the heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns of such survivor, were to invest the sum of five hundred pounds in Government or other good and rated security with the prior written approval of James Ellis and Mary Anne Martha Hinds, and that they were to permit James Ellis and his assigns during the time of his natural Life to have, receive and take for his own proper use and behalf all the dividends, interest and other profits which should during his natural life accrue, arise, be made by or from the two sums of £700 and £500 or any portion of them and from and immediately after the death of James Ellis, in case Mary Anne Martha Hinds should survive her husband, the Trustees were to permit Mary Anne Martha Hinds and her assigns during her natural Life to receive and take for her own use, all the dividends interest and other profits which should during her life accrue, arise or be made by or from the two sums of £700 and £500 or any portion of them.

After the deaths of both James Ellis and Mary Anne Martha Hinds, the Trustees, heirs, Executors, Administrators and assigns were to transfer, assign, pay, apply or dispose of all the several sums or parcels of stock and all the dividends, interest and other profits thereof to each and every of the sons and daughters lawfully to be begotten of James Ellis upon the body of Martha Hinds and the children of such sons or daughters in case any of them should be then dead leaving issue in equal shares and proportions, and if but one, wholly to that one. But the child or children of such sons or daughters as should then happen to be dead, should be entitled only to the share which his, her or their father and mother would have been entitled to if living; equally to be divided amongst such children if there be more than one and if but one, wholly to that one. In case Mary Anne Martha Hinds should survive James Ellis, and should not have any issue of their marriage living at the time of his death, or that having issue or being pregnant and that such issue should die unmarried in the lifetime of Mary Anne Martha Hinds, the Trustees, or the survivor of them, their or either of their Executors, Administrators or assigns were to transfer, assign and pay over to Mary Anne Martha Hinds or her assigns the several sums of money or stock and all the dividends, interest and other profits thereof, and of any part thereof, to her for her sole and separate use forever growing, arising or accruing from or out of the properties involved for and during the term of her natural life.

Following her death, and from and after the determination of the marriage settlement Estate then in Trust, the trustees were to pay, apply, dispose and divide the Estate in such manner as James Ellis should have directed, limited or appointed in writing, by his last will and Testament. Or, for want of such appointment, then the several sums of £700 and £500 were to descend to the next of kin of James Ellis, and if that were the case, the deed contained a Covenant permitting the Trustees, with the consent of James Ellis and Mary Anne Martha Hinds, to invest the several sums in other Securities to accrue to the Trustees and the deed also contained a clause that one Trustee should not be answerable for the act of the other.

The deed together with the memorial was witnessed, signed, sealed and delivered by James Ellis and Jane Hinds in the presence of William Wildrige and George Canall. William Wildrige, under oath, stated that he was a witness to the deed of which the above writing was intended to be a memorial and saw the same duly executed by James Ellis, Mary Anne Martha Hinds, Jane Hinds and Walter Thomas Hinds and also saw the above Memorial duly executed by the above named James Ellis and Jane Hinds and that he, William Wildrige, as a witness to the deed and memorial verified the participants' names and handwriting and stated he delivered the deed and Memorial to Francis Armstrong Esq., Deputy Register, at the Four Courts, Dublin at or near the hour of 2 o'clock in the afternoon of the 15th day of September Inst. Sworn by William Wildrige this 15th day of Sept 1817, and signed by Francis Armstrong DR.5

Some of the information from the website is presented here in acknowledgement that not all of the early Heatons to America were "our" Heatons, and specifically to remind us of the reasons for the confusion expressed by our Heaton family researchers over the years as they tried to distinguish between the Lincolnshire John Heaton and the Yorkshire John Heaton, the two John Heatons of Loudon County, Virginia. Marriage*12 November 1798He married, as her second husband, Jane Vipont, widow of William Gerrard of Liscartan, daughter of Charles Vipont and Mary Stiles, on 12 November 1798 at St. Ann's, Dublin. They appear to have planned to marry originally four years earlier in 1794 when they received their first marriage licence and, for reasons not yet determined, didn't marry until 1798.2,1,3,4
(Trustee) Deed Memorial10 November 1806A memorial deed of appointment dated 10 November 1806 was made between John Smith of Kells in the county of Meath, Esq. and Jane Smith otherwise Gerrard his wife of the first part, and Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan in the county of Meath Esq. of the other part.

Reciting that Thomas Gerrard was guardian to his younger brothers and sisters, Mary Anne Gerrard, William Edward Gerrard, Charles Gerrard and Jane Gerrard;

and also reciting that by indenture of lease bearing date 13 November 1778 made between William Waller Esq. of Allenstown, County Meath of the one part and the children's grandfather, Thomas Gerrard of Martry, County Meath of the other part, both now deceased, the said William Waller for the considerations therein mentioned devised unto the said Thomas Gerrard of Martry all that part of the lands of Balrathboyne, otherwise Boon, then in the occupancy of the said Thomas Gerrard of Martry, containing 181 acres, 2 roods and 8 perches. To hold to the said Thomas Gerrard, his executors, administrators and assigns from the first of November (just past) for the term of 21 years at the yearly rent of £118, 19s, 4p in which said lease was contained a covenant for renewal on the part of the said William Waller, his executors, administrators and assigns to the said Thomas Gerrard, his heirs, administrators and assigns as often as he, the said William Waller should review the same with the Archdeacon of Meath for such further term as the said William Waller, his executors, administrators should obtain a lease of the same and he the said Thomas Gerrard, his executors, administrators or assigns pay one-third part of the fines which should be paid by the said William Waller, his executors or administrators in obtaining such renewal.

And also reciting that Robert Waller, only son of the said William Waller, then deceased, renewed said lease with the Archdeacon of Meath and did in pursuance of the said lease by indenture bearing date 20 February 1797 devise unto the said Jane Smith otherwise Gerrard, who was described in the deed as the "personal representative of the said Thomas Gerrard (of Martry) and of William Gerrard his son", the said and therein before mentioned lands and premises at the said renewed yearly rent and subject to all the clauses and covenants in the original lease mentioned.

It should be noted here that, although Jane Smith otherwise Gerrard was described in the deed as only the personal representative of Thomas Gerrard and his son William, Jane was actually the widow of William Gerrard of Liscartan and daughter-in-law of Thomas Gerrard of Martry and the mother of Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan of the "other part" of this deed.

The deed also recited that Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan on 23 July 1803 arrived at age, and on 25 July 1804 took letters of guardianship to his younger, minor brothers and sisters.

And reciting that Robert Waller, having then lately renewed his lease with the Reverend Thomas Lucy, Archdeacon of Meath, had agreed to execute a renewal of the said lease to the person lawfully entitled to receive it;

and also reciting that in order to indemnify the said Robert Waller from all disputes as to the person legally authorized to receive said rent, it was thought necessary that the said John and Jane Smith should assign all their right and title to a renewal of the lease from Robert Waller to Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan, Jane's son and heir of his father William, to which John and Jane Smith did agree.

And witness that John Smith and Jane Smith for the considerations therein mentioned did assign unto Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan all their interest in or to any renewal of the said lands and premises and the covenants of the deed of 1778 from William Waller, deceased, to Thomas Gerrard of Martry, deceased;

And also witness that the deed was executed by Thomas Gerrard of Liscartan in trust for the sole benefit of his brothers and sisters, Sophia Webb otherwise Gerrard, Mary Anne Gerrard, William Edward Gerrard, Charles Gerrard and Jane Gerrard, and for no other use, trust or purpose whatsoever.

The deed of assignment was executed by all parties mentioned and duly signed and sealed by John and Jane Smith and witnessed by James Webb of Kells and Jane's sister Anne Vipont of Kells in the county of Meath on 15 November 1806. It was registered a few months later on 8 June 1807.1
