Deacon John Willis1

Relationship3rd great-grandfather of John Bolton
Marriage*He married Elizabeth (Hodgkins) Palmer.1
Residence*1637Deacon John Willis was at Duxbury, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts (Plymouth Colony), very early; he and his wife Elizabeth were recorded there in 1637.2
(Original Proprietor) Land Grant1656John Willis was among the fifty-four Duxbury men listed in 1645 as original proprietors for the development of the town that would become Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts (Plymouth Colony). Two others, Reverend James Keith and Samuel Edson, were added to the group later, and when the town of Bridgewater was actually incorporated in 1656 there were a total of fifty-six. Of these proprietors, only eighteen, about one-third, actually relocated and became residents of the new plantation. John Willis was one of the first proprietors to move his family from Duxbury and settle in Bridgewater.

The area known as the Bridgewaters was originally inhabited by Wampanoag who called it Saughtuchquett (Satucket). In 1642 when the township of Marshfield was separated from Duxbury and became its own distinct entity, Duxbury petitioned the court for additional land “to the westward” in compensation.

The General Court granted their petition in 1645 and six trustees, Captain Myles Standish, John Alden, George Soule, Constant Southworth, John Rogers, and William Brett were appointed to divide the land. The action by the General Court was primarily an authority to purchase land, and Captain Standish, Samuel Nash, and Constant Southworth were appointed to make the purchase. The deed was signed on 23 Mar 1649.

The Bridgewater lands were divided among the inhabitants “by an agreement among themselves”. Unfortunately, there is no record to tell us how the town proceeded to agree to their division, or how, by whom, or when it was determined what residence or other circumstance should entitle anyone to a share. Biographical Info*He was Bridgewater's first Deacon and held many town offices, both at Duxbury and Bridgewater. He represented Bridgewater at the Old Colony Court for 25 years and was appointed to solemnize marriages and administer oaths to witnesses and others.2
Land Transfer*1657Deacon John Willis sold his estate in Duxbury to William Pabodie in 1657.2
(5th Neighbor) Land RecordsJohn Willis was identified as a neighboring land owner in transactions recorded in the original purchase record books of Bridgewater reflecting purchases made by John Bolton from Joseph Cary. The records were not dated, however all appear to have occurred around the same time Bolton settled in Bridgewater. Bolton purchased five acres of land joining to the five acre lot of John Willis, running in breadth to a small walnut tree marked on two sides and running in length to a heap of stones which was the corner bounds of the ten acre lots.8
Will*1692He left a will dated 1692 and proved in 1693. In it he mentioned his children John, Nathaniel, Joseph, Comfort, Benjamin, Hannah, the wife of Nathaniel Hayward, Elizabeth, who married a Harvey and Sarah, the wife of John Ames. His son Nathaniel was appointed Executor. He gave to Joseph "land at Farfield as we go to Taunton", "to Comfort, 15 acres at the Indian Field"; "to John, land his house stands on", "to Nathaniel, the homestead", and mentions the pond "that divides between me and Benjamin" and also "the Wolf Trap Gutter."2

Marriage*before 20 December 1699He married second, as her second husband, Mary (Blake) Leonard before 20 December 1699 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England). Although Torrey appears to indicate the son and not the father, Joseph Willis, married the widow of Joseph Leonard, it is more "logical" the other way around. The son would have been about 30 years of age in 1699 and Mary was 54.7,8
