Illness*1879During the summer of 1879, Nelson Tawataw, a grandson of Meshingomesia, became ill with tuberculosis. He had just finished building his fine new brick house. One visitor to that home reported that she saw, at one time in that house, not only Nelson Tawataw, but also his grandparents, Meshingomesia and Tak-e-quah, his father Aw-taw-waw-taw, his uncle and aunt, Pe-con-ge-oh and Aunt Polly, and other Indians. With the exception of Pe-con-ge-oh's wife, Nelson and all the others of those just named died before the following Christmas. They were buried in the Indian cemetery just back of the Indian church. Fine tombstones for that day were erected to their memory.6

(American Indian) Indian Names Getting the Native American Indian names in our project "right" has been a struggle for us because we have often seen the same person's name spelled in several different ways. This was, at first, both frustrating and stressful to those of us who strive for accuracy in the presentation of our research. When we learned that the Miami Indians, who feature prominently in our project, had no written language before their associations with the French and English who kept records by writing them down, we began to understand. It’s all very human. Not every person speaks their words in the same way, and each listener may hear the same words differently. So, it’s not surprising that, phonetically, when names were spoken, they would be written down as each individual listener heard them.7,8,9,10,11,12,13

His place of birth was reported as England on his marriage record, and as Michigan on the 1910, 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses. His son reported his place of birth as Sault Ste. Marie, Chippewa County, Michigan on Arthur's death certificate. His year of birth was also estimated differently on different documents, and was likely between 1872-1874.1 
Marriage*12 October 1904He married Rose Davern, daughter of David Davern and Mary Ann Crocker, on 12 October 1904 in Newberry, Luce County, Michigan. Arthur was 31 years of age and a steamfitter, and Rose, whose age was actually about 37, was reported as 30 years of age and a dressmaker.1 
Census US 1910*27 April 1910Rose J. and Arthur Taylor were enumerated on the 1910 census taken on 27 April 1910 in Whitefish, Chippewa County, Michigan. Arthur was 37 years of age and worked as a surfman for the United States Life-Saving Service, and Rose was 35 years of age. They owned their home free of mortgage, had been married for five years, and Rose had given birth to two children, both of whom were living and enumerated with their parents in 1910. Francis J. was 4 years old and his brother, David D., was 17 months. Three boarders were also enumerated in the Taylor home in 1910. George Johnson was 34 years of age; William J. McGraw was 25 years of age; and Bernie Sullivan was age 21; they all worked with Arthur as surfmen for the United States Life-Saving Service.2

Eli was 45 years of age and a farmer with a personal estate valued at $50, and Rhoda was 40 years of age. Two children were enumerated with them in 1860. Samuel was 6 years old and Sarah's age was three months.3 
Census US 1900*26 June 1900Rhoda and Eli Taylor were enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 26 June 1900 in Birch, Braxton County, West Virginia. Eli was recorded as 69 years of age and a farmer, and Rhoda was also recorded as age 69. They reported being married for 50 years, and Rhoda had given birth to twelve children, five of whom were living. They owned their farm free of mortgage and neither of them was able to read or write. Their son, Thomas, and his wife, Sarah, were enumerated with them in 1900. Thomas was 26 years of age, worked as a farmer, and was unable to read and write, and Sarah was 28 years of age and able to both read and write. They had been married for less than a year, and Sarah had given birth to no children. Also enumerated in the Taylor household in 1900 was Samuel L. Taylor, Eli and Rhoda's grandson. He was 19 years old and able to read and write.6 
Relationship Note*Rhoda and Eli Taylor were the paternal grandparents of Samuel Lee Taylor, whom we believe was a son of their eldest, Samuel E. Taylor, and his wife, Lucinda Carr. Additionally, the Taylor's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Taylor) Ramsey Boone, was the stepmother of their grandson's wife, Ocie Boone.6,3,7,8,9

Under the heading of "Special Inquiries Relating to Indians", Mary's other name was recorded as "Wonconquah", her Nativity, and that of both of her parents, was East Miami, she was mixed blood, was ¼ White, was not living in polygamy, was a United States citizen, was taxed, had obtained citizenship in 1853, not by allotment, and her home was a fixed dwelling.3

(Daughter) Census US 190021 June 1900Jessie M. was enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 21 June 1900 in the household of her parents in Avoca, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. She was 12 years old and able to read, write and to speak English.1

(Daughter) Death10 March 1917Her mother died at age 72 at her home in Pottawatomie County, located about 7½ miles east and south of Asher, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on or about 10 March 1917.8 
Probate*8 May 1917Probate was opened on her mother's estate after Jessie submitted a petition to the County Court, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 8 May 1917, requesting that August Zoeller be appointed the estate's administrator. Ater the required legal notices had been published regarding Jessie's petition, a hearing was held by the court on 24 May 1917. The court found that August Zoeller was a proper and suitable person for the trust, and there being no objections, appointed him Administrator of the estate as requested in the petition of Jessie Brown.2 
Estate*8 May 1917Also filed by the court on 8 May 1917, Jessie's petition for probate of her mother's estate, was a document Jessie had prepared, signed, sworn to and notarized on 5 May 1917 in preparation of petitioning the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, to appoint an administrator for her mother's estate. From that document we learned that the estate of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, deceased, was believed by Jessie to consist of $300 of money in the bank and 50 acres of land in Section three, Township five, Range four East I.M. in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma valued at $2,000. She stated in the document that, in respect to the Letters of Administration she had requested, the value of the estate did not exceed $2,500. Regarding her relationship to the deceased, Jessie stated she was a daughter, 29 years of age, and resided in Asher, Oklahoma. She believed she was her mother's next of kin and her heir at law; that she left no other children or grandchildren and that her husband was dead at the time of her death. In the same document, Jessie waived the issuance of Letters of Administration to herself and requested the appointment of August Zoeller to be the administrator.3 
(Daughter) Probate14 June 1917In regard to the probate of her mother's estate, Jessie's uncle, her mother's brother, Anthony Revarre, submitted a petition to the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 14 June 1917. In it he stated that on 24 May 1917 an order was entered by the court appointing August Zoeller as administrator of the estate of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, deceased, upon the petition of Jessie Brown, filed on 8 May 1917. He stated that in that petition, Jessie Brown had alleged that she was a daughter of the decedent and that she waived issuance of letters to herself and requested the appointment of August Zoeller as the administrator of her mother's estate.

Anthony's petition further stated that Jessie Brown was not a daughter by blood of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, and was never adopted by Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor in any form or manner as required by law, and that Jessie Brown was not an heir at law of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor and was not entitled to a share in the distribution of the estate of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor.

He stated that Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor had died intestate on or about 10 March 1917, and that diligent search had been made for a will of the decedent, but none had been found.

He stated that he, Anthony Revarre, was the sole and only surviving brother of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, and was the only surviving heir at law of said decedent, and was entitled to receive all of the property left by said decedent, and was entitled to appointment as administrator of the estate, and that no person had a superior right to that appointment above the rights of himself.

He stated that if there were any other heirs at law of his sister, the decedent, their names, places of residence and place of business were not known to him, and could not be ascertained by any means within his control.

His petition additionally stated that the property left by his sister in the County of Pottawatomie, State of Oklahoma consisted of real and personal property of the value and character as follows, to wit: About $300 in money, some chickens of uncertain value, household goods, and certain real estate which Anthony was informed and believed was not subject to administration under the jurisdiction of that court, but only subject to administration by the officers of the United States Government.

It went on to state that the decedent, his sister, Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, at the time of her death was a resident of Pottawatomie County, and died in Pottawatomie County, at her home about seven and one-half miles east and south of Asher in Pottawatomie County.

He stated that he, Anthony Revarre, was a resident of the State of Indiana.

Wherefore, Anthony petitioned, that the order appointing August Zoeller administrator be vacated and set aside, and that George E. McKinnis of Shawnee, Oklahoma, a proper person be appointed administrator of the estate. He further requested that a day be set for hearing his petition, and that notice be given of the hearing by posting and publication as required by law and in addition thereto that written notice be given to the said Jessie Brown and to the said August Zoeller of the time and place set for the hearing at least five days before the hearing.

Although it was dated 15 June 1917, Anthony Revarre likely signed his petition, under oath, before a notary public, on 14 June 1917, since it was filed by the court on that date.

In an order, also dated 14 June 1917, the court ordered that his petition be heard before the County Court on the 30th of June, 1917, at 10:00 a.m., a day of the regular April term of the County Court of Pottawatomie County.9,10 
(Adopted Daughter) Probate23 July 1917In the matter of the administration of the estate of her mother, Mary E. Taylor, deceased, her mother's brother, Anthony Revarre's petition to change the administrator from August Zoeller to George E. McKinnis was heard on 23 July 1917, a regular judicial day of the July 1917 term of the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Zoeller had originally been appointed two months earlier at the request of Jessie Brown, who was his sister's daughter, Anthony's niece. During the hearing, Jessie Brown and August Zoeller confirmed they were aware of Anthony Revarre's petition, and that they were in agreement that Revere’s request for the appointment of George E. McKinnis as administrator of the estate.

It was then considered, ordered and adjudged by the court that the order entered on 24 May 1917 appointing August Zoeller Administrator of the Estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, be set aside, vacated and held for naught, and August Zoeller was ordered to make and file a report with the court, within ten days from and after the date of the order, of all his acts as Administrator, including an inventory and statement of any and all property belonging to the estate coming to his hands as Administrator.

It was further ordered, adjudged and decreed that George E. McKinnis be and is appointed Administrator of the estate.11 
(Adopted Daughter) Probate7 October 1918In the matter of the administration of the estate of her mother, a hearing was scheduled to be held in the County Court room, Tecumseh, Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 7 October 1918, at 2:30 o'clock p.m.. Notices had been published in Oklahoma newspapers as required by law, beginning on 16 August 1918. They reported that Anthony Revarre was the sole and only heir of the decedent, and that Jessie Brown had appeared in the cause claiming an interest in the estate, and that she was the only person besides Anthony Revarre who had appeared and claimed any interest in the course of the estate's administration. The notice, issued by W. S. Pendleton, County Judge, stated that Jessie Brown, and all other persons interested in the estate, named or not named, having or claiming any interest in the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, were ordered to appear at the hearing and exhibit their respective claims of heirship, ownership, or interest in the estate.

Researcher's Note: We have found no evidence that this hearing ever took place, although we also discovered the reasons why at the hearing held a week later.12,13,14,15 
(Niece) Death4 November 1918Her uncle, Anthony Revarre, died on or about 4 November 1918 in Bement, Piatt County, Illinois, at about age 70.16,17,18 
(Niece) Probate12 February 1919The Oklahoma estate of her uncle, Anthony Revarre, deceased, was opened for probate on 12 February 1919 in the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, with the appointment of George E. McKinnis as administrator. His Letters of Administration stated that the last will of Anthony Revarre, deceased, a copy of which was thereto annexed, having been proved and recorded in the County Court of Piatt County, Illinois, and the Executrices therein named, (Pearl Groves, 125½ N. Franklin Street, Danville, Illinois, and Mrs. Millie Anders, 227 S. Main street, Decatur, Illinois), being non-residents of Oklahoma, and having filed a petition for the appointment of George E. McKinnis, George E. McKinnis was appointed administrator with the will annexed.19

John was 41 years of age and a general farmer working on his own account, and Jessie was 30 years of age. They owned their farm free of mortgage, and both were able to read and write. Their five children were enumerated with them in 1920. Edna was 11 years old, was able to read and write, and had attended school within the census year; Bula was 6 years old, was not able to read or write, and had not attended school within the census year; and their three younger children, Johnnie, Georgie and Dollie, were 3 years, 1 year, and six months old, respectively.20 
(Adopted Daughter) Probate14 October 1921In the matter of the estate of her mother, attorneys for Jessie's uncle, Anthony Revarre, filed a request with the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 14 October 1921, for permission to withdraw a petition they had filed previously which had asked the court to determine the heirship of Mary E. Taylor, deceased. Their new petition referred to certain real estate being the allotment of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, as an adopted member of the Pottawatomie Tribe of Indians; that the land was at the time of the death of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, under the charge and control of the Department of the Interior and was not in any manner subject to administration under the laws of the State of Oklahoma; that since the death of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, the Secretary of the Interior had, under the Acts of Congress in such case made and provided, after hearings duly had and conducted, determined the heirship of Mary E. Taylor, deceased; that the Pottawatomie County Court had never acquired jurisdiction over the said land, nor to determine the heirship thereto, nor the interest of the heirs in the land; that the petition to determine heirship and all other pleadings pertaining to the determination of heirship merely encumber the record herein.

Wherefore, the attorneys for Anthony Revarre asked the court to permit them to withdraw all pleadings, and proceedings of every nature or kind pertaining to the determination of heirship in the cause.

The request was signed and notarized by G. C. Abernathy, an attorney with Abernathy & Howell, on 14 October 1921.13 
(Adopted Daughter) Probate14 October 1921On the same date of 14 October 1921 that the attorneys for Anthony Revarre had filed their request, it being one of the regular days of the October 1921 term of the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, the court heard their application to withdraw their petition for determination of heirship, and all the proceedings therein in the matter of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased. The order the court issued in the case as a result of the hearing stated that said application ought to be granted and that it was therefore considered, ordered, adjudged and decreed that the petition, notices of hearing, demurrer and any and all orders made in connection with such petition be and same are hereby stricken from the files in said cause, and permission is granted to withdraw all such pleadings, papers, notices, orders, etc. pertaining thereto.

The order was signed by Clarence Robinson, County Judge, and signing his agreement or acceptance with an "O.K." was Maile Goode, as the attorney for Jessie Brown. The firm of Abernathy & Howell, attorneys for Anthony Revarre, who had initiated the hearing, also signed the document.14 
(Adopted Daughter) Administration14 October 1921 Also on 14 October 1921, in the matter of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, George E. McKinnis, Administrator, submitted his Final Account and Petition for Distribution and Discharge to the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. His petition stated that the time for creditors to submit claims had expired on 24 November 1917, but he had received no claims, and that if any claims existed, they had long since been barred by the Statute of Limitations, and reported that, at that time, there were no claims against the estate.

His petition next reported a full and correct statement of his receipts, expenses and disbursements by himself as administrator, of the estate, adding that no property, except money, had been received by him as administrator, so no appraisement had been necessary. He reported total receipts as $342.34, consisting of $309.40 from the Oklahoma State Bank of Konawa and $32.94 in interest to June 1, 1921; the total expenses of the estate were reported as $139.52, consisting of his paid out expenses as administrator of $72.40, the Administrator's fee of $17.12, and attorneys' fees of $50.00; and he reported $202.82 as his balance on hand.

His petition went on to allege that he was entitled to receive, as he had included in his report, the $17.12 in fees as the administrator of the estate. He also stated that, as far as the attorneys' fees he had included, that Abernathy & Howell, attorneys, had prepared all papers, and performed all the usual services incident to the administration of the estate, and that he, as the court's Administrator of the estate, had paid the attorneys, Abernathy & Howell, $50.00 for their services rendered in connection with the administration. He added that the amount was not to cover any compensation the attorneys were to receive for their services connected with hearings conducted by the Secretary of the Interior to determine the heirship of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, and the persons entitled to inherit her allotment.

His petition stated, further, that Mary E. Taylor left surviving her no husband, nor children, nor child or children of any deceased child or children, nor father, nor mother, nor sisters, and only one brother, to-wit: Anthony Revarre, who was the sole and only surviving heir at law of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, and who was entitled to inherit all of the property left by Mary E. Taylor, deceased.

He went on to state that Anthony Revarre had died on or about 4 November 1918 in Bement, Piatt County, Illinois, leaving a last will and testament which was being probated in this Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, as a foreign will in case# 2563. He stated that he, himself, had been appointed administrator, with the , will annexed, of the last will and testament of Anthony Revarre, deceased, and that all of the rest, residue and remainder of the property belonging to the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, should be distributed to himself, George E. McKinnis, as administrator with the will annexed of the estate of Anthony Revarre, deceased.

His petition closed with the statement that all the lawful debts of the estate of Mary E. Taylor had been paid and that her estate was ready for settlement and distribution. Wherefore, he requested that his final account be allowed and confirmed, and that upon that being allowed and settled, that the residue belonging to her estate be distributed as requested above, and that thereupon he, George E. McKinnis, be discharged from his duties as administrator of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased.

His petition had been signed and notarized on 4 October 1921 by George E. McKinnis.15 
(Adopted Daughter) Probate29 October 1921 The Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 29 October 1921, issued a Final Decree regarding the administration of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased. The court's document reviewed each of the matters reported and requested in the petition of the administrator, George E. McKinnis, accepting and approving each. Lastly, the court ordered, adjudged and decreed that the described property of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, which amounted to $202.82, be and hereby is transferred, vested, assigned and conveyed to George E. McKinnis, administrator with the will annexed, of Anthony Revarre, deceased.

On the same date, in open court, the judge read the court's Final Discharge, stating that it was adjudged and decreed that George E. McKinnis, Administrator of the estate of Mary E. Taylor, deceased, had fully and faithfully discharged the duties of his trust; that he was thereby wholly and absolutely discharged from all further duties and responsibilities as the administrator and that the letters of administration were thereby vacated; and declared the estate fully distributed, and the trust closed, and George E. McKinnis and his sureties thereby released from any liability to be hereafter incurred.21 
(Niece) Probate20 December 1921In the matter of the estate of Anthony Revarre, deceased, a Notice to Creditors dated 20 December 1921 was prepared, posted and published, as required by law and ordered by the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. It stated that all persons having claims against Anthony Revarre, deceased, were required to present the same, with the necessary vouchers, to the undersigned administrator at 105 North Broadway Street, Shawnee, Oklahoma, within four months of the date hereof or the same will be forever barred. The notice was dated December 20, 1921, and was signed by George E. McKinnis, Administrator.22 
(Niece) Probate4 January 1922An itemized accounting of the charges of R. C. Stuart against the estate of Anthony Revarre, deceased, was received and filed on 4 January 1922 by the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Stuart listed: Seventeen months that Revarre had boarded at Stuart's home at the rate of seven dollars per month, or $119.00; Money loaned in the sum of $50.00; Paid the sum of $40.55 for Doctor services and medicine.23 
(Niece) Probate2 May 1922In the matter of the estate of her uncle, Anthony Revarre, deceased, George E. McKinnis, administrator with the will annexed of the estate, submitted his final accounting and petition for distribution to the Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, on 2 May 1922.

His report stated that notice to creditors of the estate to submit claims had been given according to law as according to affidavits on file with the court.

His report listed one item of receipt and two disbursements: Anthony Revarre's estate had received $202,82 from the estate of his sister, Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, deceased, of which George E. McKinnis was also the administrator; and the disbursements were $25.00 for costs and $25.00 for his Administrator's fee. He stated that $152.82 was the amount remaining in the estate of Anthony Revarre, deceased.

He next stated that, as the administrator of the estate with the will annexed, he had been presented with a claim for board and room and amounts expended for medicines, and that had been allowed by himself as administrator, and approved by the court, in the sum of $209.55 in favor of R. C. Stuart. He wrote that the remaining $152.82 should be paid to the said R. C. Stuart on his claim.

He stated that he, as administrator with the will annexed, had not received any other or further sums of money nor property than as above stated, nor had he taken possession, or control of any real estate belonging to the deceased.

Additionally, he reported that the deceased, Anthony Revarre, had been held by the Honorable Secretary of the Interior to be the sole surviving heir at law of Mary E. (Revarre) Taylor, deceased, but that the determination was made long after the death of the said Anthony Revarre, deceased, but that patent for the real estate embraced in said allotment was issued directly to the persons named in the last will and testament of Anthony Revarre, deceased, to-wit: Mrs. Millie Anders and Pearl Groves, and that the said real estate was never in the possession or control of the administrator, himself, George E. McKinnis.

He further stated, as administrator with the will annexed, that if there were any debts other than that to R. C. Stuart above named, they had been barred by the Statute of Limitations, and that the balance remaining on hand after court costs and Administrator's fees should be paid to the said R. C. Stuart, aforesaid, to be applied in satisfaction of his claim against the estate, aforesaid.

He then reported that the said decedent left surviving him no widow, nor child nor children, nor child or children of any deceased child or children, nor father, nor mother, nor brother, nor sister, but did leave a last will and testament, which had been admitted to probate, and in said will Mrs. Millie Anders and Pearl Groves were named as sole devisees.

In his last paragraph, which began... Wherefore, he petitioned the court that his final account as above set forth be allowed and confirmed; that upon the same being allowed and settled the residue belonging to the estate be distributed as above requested; and that thereupon said George E. McKinnis be discharged from his duties as such administrator with the will annexed of the estate of Anthony Revarre, deceased.

After swearing his oath that his document was true and correct, George E. McKinnis signed and notarized his name on 2 May 1922.24
