Both the Bride and Groom were from Richmond, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and were married by the Reverend Silas Churchill. According to the New Lebanon resource, The town of New Lebanon in the Northeast corner of Columbia County is separated from Berkshire County, Massachusetts, only by the Taconic range of the Berkshire Hills. In the first half of the 1800' s the town was noted for two things: at Mount Lebanon was the largest and most important settlement of the Shakers, and at Lebanon Springs only a few miles to the North was one of the most popular Summer resorts. Some of the many hotels of that period are still standing, though showing their age. The Spa was evidently much frequented by Berkshire County people and was a favorite place for weddings.3,4,1

Obituary Under the title, "Mrs. Caroline Dougherty", her obituary reported that Caroline died on Sunday at the home of her son, Gaylord Dougherty of Clark street, Waverly, at the age of 83 years. She was on a visit to her son, and while there was stricken with pneumonia. Her home was in Lestershire, New York. She was survived by two sons, Gaylord Dougherty of Waverly, and Henry Harrison Dougherty of LaPorte, Indiana, and five daughters: Mrs. Nellie E. Hurlbutt of Buchanan, Michigan; Mrs. Mertie Wood of Lestershire; Mrs. Dora Levitt of Tioga Center; Mrs. Alice Carter of Camptown, Pennsylvania; and Mrs. Almeda Wilcox of Rush, Pennsylvania. Her funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon and burial was made in East Waverly cemetery.11

Census US 1900*14 June 1900Margaret and Michael N. Bracken were enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 14 June 1900 in Rudd, Floyd County, Iowa. Michael was 61 years of age and a farmer on his own account, and Margaret was 43 years of age. They had been married for three years, owned their farm free of mortgage, and Margaret had given birth to two children during her first marriage, both of whom were living. Four children, all from Michael's second marriage, were enumerated with the couple in 1900. Frances was 18 years old and had completed her schooling; Michael L. and Jesse were ages 14 and 12 years, respectively, and worked as laborers on the family farm; and Pearly was 9 years old, at school, and had attended school for eight months of the census year. All the adults in the family were able to read, write and to speak English.11 
(Wife) Will23 December 1907Her husband prepared his will dated 23 December 1907 in Rudd Township, Floyd County, Iowa, naming and bequeathing the following:

To his wife, Margaret Bracken, he gave one-third of all his property, both personal and real, to be in lieu of her dower right.

To each of his ten surviving children, Douglas Bracken, Sarah E. Gast, Lizzie McKee, Amanda Strawn, Victoria Stickney, Roy Bracken, Jesse Bracken, Pearl Bracken, Frankie Tatum and Maggie Eggers, he bequeathed one-eighteenth of his estate, both personal and real.

To his four grandchildren, Nealy Nelson, Sadie Nelson, Florence Lewis and James Lewis, who were the children of his two deceased daughters, Minnie Nelson and Lottie Lewis, he bequeathed to each of them, one-thirty-sixth of his estate, both personal and real.

He further clarified that Sadie Kingsbury and Nealy Nelson were the children of his deceased daughter Minnie Nelson, and that Florence Lewis and James Lewis were the children of his deceased daughter Lottie Lewis.

He nominated Henry Buckman of Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, to be the Executor of his will, stating that he, knowing and believing and fully trusting to Henry Buckman's integrity and judgment, gave him by his will the power to defer the distribution of his property, both personal and real, as to all the beneficiaries except his wife, giving to him full power to rent, lease or dispose of the property both personal and real at any time within a period of five years from his death. At the end of five years, property was to be distributed as set forth in his will.

He signed his will on 23 December 1907 in the presence of F. W. Haynes and H. N. Ervay.12 
(Wife) Death2 January 1908Margaret became a widow for the second time when Michael N. Bracken died of diabetes on 2 January 1908 at age 69, 10 days after preparing his will.5 
Residence*1908Following her husband's death in 1908, Margaret left the Bracken home to live her remaining years with a variety of her family members in Iowa.13,14,15,16 
(Mother) Death21 March 1910Her older son, Wylie W. Eggers, died tragically in the Green Mountain train wreck of 21 March 1910 at age 29. Newspapers, calling the accident the deadliest railroad accident in Iowa's history, reported that newer steel passenger cars crushed two wooden day coaches, ultimately killing 54 people and injuring nearly 40, after the train's locomotives left the rails near the Marshall/Tama county line, four miles northeast of Green Mountain in Tama County, Iowa. Wylie's horrific death left his widow, Maggie Eggers, who was 26 years of age, four children all under the age of 10 years, his mother, Margaret Alice (Tatum) Eggers Bracken, who was his wife Maggie's stepmother as well as her mother-in-law, and a younger brother, Joseph.7,8 
(Daughter) Census US 191016 April 1910She was enumerated as Margaret Bracken on the 1910 census taken on 16 April 1910 in the household of her widowed mother, Ruth A. Tatum, in Rock Grove, Floyd County, Iowa. Margaret was 52 years of age, a widow, had given birth to two children, one of whom was living, and had her own income.13 
(Widow) Probate22 January 1912The source's probate package from Floyd County, Iowa, for her husband, Michael N. Bracken, deceased, contained only a few pertinent summarized documents dated 22 January 1912, the first being the election and written consent of his widow, Margaret Bracken. Her consents included her agreement with the provisions of her husband's last will and testament, and also her consent to have the Executor sell the real estate of the estate, including her one-third share of it, and agreeing that one-third share of the proceeds, after deducting the expenses of the sale, be paid to her in lieu of her distributive share in the estate.

The Executor, Henry Buckman, had provided a list of several pieces of land that had been owned by the deceased, Michael N. Bracken, and reported that he believed that those lands could not be equitably divided among the legatees of the will without sale.

He said there was a petition from the widow of the deceased, Michael N. Bracken, on file with the court asking that her distributive share, consisting of one-third of the estate, be left intact with that of the other legatees and that the Executor sell the same, together with that of the other legatees, and pay to her one-third of the proceeds of the sale.

He provided the court with a document titled "Exhibit A" which was a revised transcription of Michael N. Bracken's will dated 23 December 1907. In the transcription, Sadie Nelson's name had been changed to Sadie Kingsbury, as she had married in August 1908, after her grandfather's death.

The Executor, in his petition, then asked that an order be made by the court empowering and ordering him to sell at private or public sale the real estate as it had been described and to appoint appraisers to determine the lowest price for which the land could be sold, if sold at private sale. There were no objections to his request, and his petition was approved by the court.

There was no final accounting in the probate package reporting sale proceeds or the timing or amounts of distributions to Michael's heirs.12 
(Mother) Census US 192013 February 1920Margaret was enumerated on the 1920 census taken on 13 February 1920 in the household of her son and daughter-in-law, Harriett M. and Joseph M. Eggers, in Nora Springs, Floyd County, Iowa. Margaret was a widow, 65 years of age, and was able to read, write and to speak English.14 
Census US 19302 April 1930Margaret Bracken, her son, Joseph M. Eggers, and grandson, John L. Eggers, were enumerated together on the 1930 census taken on 2 April 1930 at 1021 Paxton Street, Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa. They were the only roomers in the home of Thekla Johnson, who was 46 years of age, divorced, and owned her house which was valued at $6,000. Margaret, who was recorded as Alice Eggers, was 76 years of age and a widow; her son, Joseph, was 46 years of age and divorced; and his son, John, was 24 years of age and single. Joseph was a roofer and painter for private houses, and John was employed for wages as a roofer and painter in his father's business.15 
(Sister) Census US 19408 April 1940Margaret was enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 8 April 1940 in the household of her sister, Ruth Ellen Ayres, in Rockford, Floyd County, Iowa. Margaret was 84 years of age, a widow, and was unable to work. She had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had income from sources other than employment. Her sister was 71 years of age, a widow, and worked doing the home housework. On April 1, 1935, she and her sister, Ruth Ellen, had been living together in Ruth Ellen's same house. Margaret's grandson, Ivan Eggers, was also living with them in 1940. Ivan was 37 years of age, single, had completed his education through the 8th grade of elementary school, and worked for wages as a mechanic in a privately owned automobile garage. He had worked 52 weeks in 1939 for an income of $800, and had worked 70 hours the week before the census was taken. He had no income from other sources, and on April 1, 1935, he had lived in Rockford, although not in the same house.16 
ResidenceOctober 1943At some point before her death in October 1943, Margaret moved to 603 N. Washington Avenue, Mason City, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, which was located about two blocks away from the home of her son, Joseph Eggers.17,18,19
