(Nephew) Probate | 8 November 1906 | The estate of Albert's aunt, Bell B. The International Trust Company's Supplemental and Amended petition, dated 18 August 1906, stated that the deceased left, as her sole and only surviving heirs at law, devises and legatees, the following: The International Trust Company, of Denver, Colorado, devisee and legatee, in trust; First Church of Christ, Scientist, legatee in trust; Geraldine C. Brockway, sister of deceased and now the wife of George Brockway, and residing at Blissfield, Lenawee County, State of Michigan. Mary C. Miller, formerly Mary C. Strong, niece of deceased, now residing at Blissfield, Lenawee County, State of Michigan; Albert Henry Strong, nephew of deceased, now residing at Toledo, Ohio. In the same document, The International Trust Company itemized the estimated value of Bell's estate as $5,975.00 from her various properties in Denver and Leadville, Colorado, which produced an estimated $600.00 per annum from rents, issues and profits; and about $1,540.00 in cash, watches, jewelry, household goods and wearing apparel, with about $1,500.00 of that amount being in cash. With everything, The International Trust Company estimated the value of her estate to be $7,515 plus the annual income from her real estate. For 33 consecutive days, from 27 September 1906 through 29 October 1906, the County Clerk for the City and County of Denver published a "Notice to Non-Resident Heirs at Law" in the Daily Journal of Denver which sent greetings from the people of the state of Colorado to Geraldine C. Brockway, sister of deceased and now the wife of George Brockway, and residing at Blissfield, Lenawee County, Michigan; Mary C. Miller, formerly Mary C. Strong, niece of deceased, now residing at Blissfield, Lenawee County, Michigan and Albert Henry Strong, nephew of deceased, residing at Toledo, Ohio. The notice reviewed the contents of the Will and estimated value of the estate of their relative, Bell B. Edwards, and directed each or all to appear in the County Court of Denver on Monday, 29 October 1906 to show cause if they have, or may have reason not to open probate as directed by the Will. The probate documents do not indicate any of them appeared. On 6 December 1906, the court appointed Allan M. Culver, George S. Van Law and John C. Gallup, all of the City and County of Denver, to inventory, value and appraise the goods, chattels and personal estate of Bell B. Edwards, deceased. Their inventory, valued at $601.80, was submitted on 15 December 1906 and approved by the court on 18 December 1906. The court approved the Executor's request, on 16 January 1907, to sell at private sale or sales, all the goods and chattels of said testatrix mentioned and described in the Appraisement Bill on file herein, for cash in hand, at not less than the appraised value of each article therein mentioned.3,4,2,5,6,7 |

(Niece) Probate | 8 November 1906 | The estate of Mary's aunt, Bell B. Edwards, was opened for probate on 8 November 1906 in Denver, Colorado, and, as directed by her will, The International Trust Company was appointed Executor. About four months of activity on the case had occurred, however, before the Executor was officially appointed. On 12 July 1906, when The International Trust Company filed its first petition to the court, they had not yet determined the name of the sister Bell had mentioned in her will, nor had they determined if she had left any other surviving heirs at law who needed to be notified of Bell's will and probate. Mary C. Miller, formerly Mary C. b. 1813, d. 1868
Birth* | 1813 | Mary Polly Strong was born about 1813 in New York.1 |
Name Variation | She was called Polly.2
Marriage* | She married Christian Gierhart.1,3
Census US 1850* | 23 September 1850 | Polly and Christian Gierhart were enumerated on the 1850 census taken on 23 September 1850 in Milton, DuPage County, Illinois. Christian was 40 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $200, and Polly was 37 years of age. Their six children were enumerated with them in 1850. Alfred was 18 years old, worked as a laborer on the family farm, and had attended school within the census year; Susan and Olive were ages 15 and 14 years, respectively, and had attended school within the census year; and John W., Mary Jane and Laura were ages 10, 8, and 6 years, respectively. Also enumerated with the family in 1850 was David Crumb, who was 30 years of age, had been born in Ireland, and worked as a laborer on the farm.2 |
(Mother) Research Notes | The name Robertson has been found, both as a surname and as a given name, in our research of Susan Gierhart and Henry S. Godfrey. In an early transcription of Susan's name in the record of the couple's 1853 marriage, and then subsequently recopied in other indexes of that marriage, she was identified as Susan Robertson. Her parents were not named, and we don't know if Robertson had meaning or was an error in transcription. Had she been married before to a husband with the surname Robertson? She was 17 years old when she married Henry Godfrey, so an earlier marriage, while not impossible, seems unlikely. Our research, through census and Find a Grave records, indicates her maiden surname was Gierhart, and that her parents were Christian Gierhart and Mary Polly Strong, and when her daughter, Emma, married in 1878, Emma's parents' names were reported as Henry S. Godfrey and Susan Gierhart. Then, when Susan and Henry's son, Charles, married, also in 1878, his marriage record identified his father's name as Robertson Godfrey. It was actually Henry Sheldon Godfrey, so therein lies our dilemma. Two marriage records, 25 years apart, and both including the name Robertson, which may be a clue to something significant. We don't believe in coincidences, and wonder if somewhere, in the Gierhart or Godfrey family, or an earlier marriage, there is a Robertson. We'd very much like to know, and would appreciate hearing from anyone who is able to help us resolve our Robertson conundrum.4,5,6,2,7,1,3
Census US 1860* | 23 June 1860 | Mary and Christian Gierhart were enumerated on the 1860 census taken on 23 June 1860 in Toulon, Stark County, Illinois. Christian was 51 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $3,200 and a personal estate valued at $300, and Mary was 47 years of age. Two of their children were enumerated with them in 1860. John was 18 years old, and their second Laura, who had been given her deceased sister's name, was 2 years old. The couple's eldest son, Alfred Gierhart, was enumerated with his wife and children in the next household on the same census page.8 |
Death* | 1868 | She died in 1868 in Toulon, Stark County, Illinois, at about age 551 |
