Our transcription of John's will follows:

In the name of God Amen, I John Meyer of the Borough of Easton in the County of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, being very sick in body, but of sound mind, memory and understanding, blessed be God for the same, but considering the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in the manner and form following, to wit:

Principally, and first of all I commend my immortal soul into the hands of God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors herein after named, and as to such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give and dispose of the same in the following manner, to wit:

First, it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease.

Item. I give and bequeath unto my dear wife Catherine the use and occupation of my house and lot in the Borough of Easton aforesaid, together with all my personal estate for her support for and during her natural life or widowhood, and in case my said wife shall see fit at any time to dispose of the said personal Estate, and the same to apply for her support during the time aforesaid, without any hindrance from any of my heirs.

Item. It is my will that my daughter Catherine shall live in my said house with my said wife so long as she remains single, but in case my said wife and she cannot agree, and my said wife wishes to live alone, in such case she shall immediately remove from the premises at my said wife’s desire.

And it is my will that immediately after the decease of my said wife, I do order and direct that my executors hereinafter named shall sell and dispose of all my real estate situate in the Borough of Easton or elsewhere at public vendue (together with my personal estate that shall remain after my wife’s death) to such person or persons and for such price or prices as may be reasonably gotten for the same and for that purpose I do authorize and empower my said Executor to sign, seal, execute and acknowledge all such deed or deeds of conveyance as may be requisite and necessary for the granting and assuring the same to the purchaser or purchasers thereof in fee simple. And the monies arising from such sale, together with my personal property, shall be divided into six equal shares, to wit:

One share to my daughter Elizabeth, one share to the heirs of my son Christopher, deceased, one share to my son John, one share to my son Jacob, one share to my son Peter, and the other share unto my daughter Catherine, and to their, and to each of their heirs and assigns.

And lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my said wife Catherine Executrix and my son John Executor of this my Will, hereby revoking all other wills, legacies and bequests by me heretofore made and declaring this and no other to be my last will testament.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal at the Borough of Easton the 4th day of February in the year of our Lord 1807, and he signed his will Johannes Muir in the presence of witnesses, William Roup and Jacob Shipe.1

John was 50 years of age and an innkeeper, and Ann was also 50 years of age. Seven children were enumerated with their parents in 1841, and were recorded sons first and daughters second. Ebenezer was 22 years old and a painter, John was 20 years old and worked in a draper's shop, and Thomas was 12 years old. No question regarding education was asked that year, and no occupations were recorded for the daughters. Ann was 19, Sarah 17, Mary 16, and Hannah was 11 years old. Two others, Isaac Evans, age 20, who worked as a male servant, and Rebecca Edmunds, age 22, working as a female servant, were also enumerated with the family in 1841.1

John was 60 years of age and a maltster, employing one man, and Ann was 61 years of age. Their five youngest children were enumerated with their parents in 1851. Ann and Sarah, ages 29 and 27 years, respectively, were both dressmakers, Mary was 25 years of age and at home, Thomas was 23 years old and worked as an assistant maltster, and Hannah, who was 21 years old, was recorded as a maltster's daughter. Two others were enumerated in the Michael household in 1851. Margaret Owen, age 26, worked as a general servant, and Phillip Embry, age 27, was a maltster’s man.2

Esther had been born in Studley, Warwickshire, England. The couple's son, Henry Smith, age 23 and a painter, was also enumerated in his parents' household in 1861.6 
Marriage*1862He married first Emma Hiles Wright, daughter of Abraham Harding Wright and Martha Hiles, and their marriage was registered in the First Quarter of 1862 in Evesham, Worcestershire, England.7,8 
(Husband) Death15 December 1870Thomas became a widower with three very young children when Emma Hiles (Wright) Michael died on 15 December 1870 at age 34.9

Ermenilda Wright, age 22 and a sister of Thomas's deceased wife, was working in the home as a governess and was also enumerated with the Michael family in 1871, as was Melinda Dodge, age 30, who worked as a general domestic servant.10

Notcutt, was 16 years old and a pupil teacher, which may have meant he was a tutor. Also enumerated in the Michael household in 1881 was Thomas's sister, Hannah (Michael) Saunders, who was 51 years of age, married, and an assistant housekeeper. The final person enumerated with the family that year was Mary A. Watson, age 19, who worked as a general servant.11 
Occupation*1884Thomas Michael was a well-respected Baptist Minister. He was first educated in his native town of Abergavenny, Wales, and in 1853 entered Pontypool College where he remained for three years. In 1856, he undertook his first pastorate at the Mill Street chapel in Evesham, Worcestershire, England, and in 1861 removed to the Pellon Lane church in Halifax, Yorkshire, a pastorate he held for 23 years. In 1882 he was elected president of the Yorkshire Association of Baptist Churches. He took an active part in the public affairs of the town and, side by side with Dr. Mellor, fought many a battle in the cause of liberty of conscience. In 1884, he resigned his pastorate, and spent the remaining years of his life in London.5
