(Original Proprietor) Land Grant1656Christopher Wadsworth was among the fifty-four Duxbury men listed in 1645 as original proprietors for the development of the town that would become Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts (Plymouth Colony). Two others, Reverend James Keith and Samuel Edson, were added to the group later, and when the town of Bridgewater was actually incorporated in 1656 there were a total of fifty-six. Of these proprietors, only eighteen, about one-third, actually relocated and became residents of the new plantation. Christopher Wadsworth was one of those who never relocated his family and moved to Bridgewater.

The area known as the Bridgewaters was originally inhabited by Wampanoag who called it Saughtuchquett (Satucket). In 1642 when the township of Marshfield was separated from Duxbury and became its own distinct entity, Duxbury petitioned the court for additional land “to the westward” in compensation.

The General Court granted their petition in 1645 and six trustees, Captain Myles Standish, John Alden, George Soule, Constant Southworth, John Rogers, and William Brett were appointed to divide the land. The action by the General Court was primarily an authority to purchase land, and Captain Standish, Samuel Nash, and Constant Southworth were appointed to make the purchase. The deed was signed on 23 Mar 1649.

The Bridgewater lands were divided among the inhabitants “by an agreement among themselves”. Unfortunately, there is no record to tell us how the town proceeded to agree to their division, or how, by whom, or when it was determined what residence or other circumstance should entitle anyone to a share. Land Grant*The proprietor's land in Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony, that had originally been granted to Christopher Wadsworth was later owned by his sons Joseph Wadsworth and Samuel Wadsworth. Whether by gift or inheritance is not known.9

The real estate, which consisted of 100 acres of land and a dwelling house, a barn, and a blacksmith shop on his farm, was valued at £222.00 by the appraisers who had been appointed by the probate court. The appraisers also prepared an equitable division of the real estate which was accepted and approved by the deceased Samuel Wadsworth's heirs. The Division of Property document, dated 13 April 1789, mentions his widow, Huldah, as "now the wife of Thomas Butterfield", and describes her share as her Dower or Thirds. The balance of his estate was divided between Samuel and Huldah's six children, and named their five daughters, Esther Dwinel, Abiah Wadsworth, Rachel Carter, Huldah Wadsworth, and Thankful Wadsworth, and their youngest child and only surviving son, Samuel Wadsworth. Confirming their approvals of the divisions with their signatures were the widow Huldah's brother, Samuel Heaton, as guardian for the Wadsworth minor children, the husband of the eldest daughter, Jonathan Dwinel, the third daughter, Rachel, who had married Jonas Carter the previous November, the second daughter, Abiah Wadsworth, the widow, Huldah Butterfield, and her second husband, Thomas Butterfield.5

(3rd Daughter) Estate Distribution13 April 1789The division of Rachel's deceased father's real estate was not finalized by the probate court until seven years after his death when his heirs requested, for the family's convenience, the legal division of the property. Her mother had remarried, Rachel and her sister, Esther, had married, and their younger siblings were represented by their guardian, their uncle Samuel Heaton, their mother's brother. The real estate, which consisted of 100 acres of land and a dwelling house, a barn, and a blacksmith shop on his farm, was valued at £222.00 by the appraisers who had been appointed by the probate court. The appraisers also prepared an equitable division of the real estate which was accepted and approved by the deceased Samuel Wadsworth's heirs. The Division of Property document, dated 13 April 1789, mentions his widow, Huldah, as "now the wife of Thomas Butterfield", and describes her share as her Dower or Thirds. The balance of his estate was divided between Samuel and Huldah's six children, and named their five daughters, Esther Dwinel, Abiah Wadsworth, Rachel Carter, Huldah Wadsworth, and Thankful Wadsworth, and their youngest child and only surviving son, Samuel Wadsworth. Confirming their approvals of the divisions with their signatures were the widow Huldah's brother, Samuel Heaton, as guardian for the Wadsworth minor children, the husband of the eldest daughter, Jonathan Dwinel, the third daughter, Rachel, who had married Jonas Carter the previous November, the second daughter, Abiah Wadsworth, the widow, Huldah Butterfield, and her second husband, Thomas Butterfield.4

Marriage*Ruth Wadsworth may have been the name of the woman who married Daniel Heaton as reported by a 2nd great grandson of Daniel's in his Sons of the Revolution application based upon Daniel's son David's service. Ruth may have been from Connecticut, but more likely was from New Jersey, and they probably married there. Heaton Families II stated that Daniel married Ruth Wadsworth in Connecticut in 1734, and that she was born in Framingham, Massachusetts on 14 April 1711 to John Wadsworth and Elizabeth Stanley. Well.... it turns out that John and Elizabeth Wadsworth had a daughter Ruth, born on 14 April 1711 in Farmington, Connecticut. However, their Ruth Wadsworth married Elisha Lewis on 18 April 1739 in Farmington, and died on 15 October 1776 in Farmington. Ruth's husband, Elisha Lewis was born on 23 July 1710 in Farmington to Nathaniel and Abigail (Ashley) Lewis, and died in Farmington on 13 May 1769. Both Elisha Lewis and his wife, Ruth (Wadsworth) Lewis were buried in Memento Mori Cemetery, Farmington, Connecticut.

One of the things we've learned as we've improved our genealogical problem solving skills is how tempting it is to jump to the wrong conclusions in our desire to "connect the dots". We're guessing that somewhere along the line of Daniel's descendants, someone stated his wife's name was "Ruth" or even "Ruth Wadsworth", maybe from one of the Wadsworth families of New Jersey. Over time, that "information" has been passed along in the Heaton family, with someone even selecting the Connecticut origins for Ruth we now find published in the Heaton Families II as fact and, sadly, duplicated hundreds of times on websites and other electronic genealogical trees. It's sad because we realize that once the untruth reaches the internet, it never goes away.2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,1 
Relocation*1770Daniel and his wife Ruth remained in Morris County until the mid 1760s when they joined their sons, first in northern Virginia and then finally about 1770 in that part of Westmoreland County that would, in 1781, become Washington County, and in 1796, Greene County, Pensylvania.10,11

The Division of Property document, dated 13 April 1789, mentions his widow, Huldah, as "now the wife of Thomas Butterfield", and describes her share as her Dower or Thirds. The balance of his estate was divided between Samuel and Huldah's six children, and named their five daughters, Esther Dwinel, Abiah Wadsworth, Rachel Carter, Huldah Wadsworth, and Thankful Wadsworth, and their youngest child and only surviving son, Samuel Wadsworth. Confirming their approvals of the divisions with their signatures were the widow Huldah's brother, Samuel Heaton, as guardian for the Wadsworth minor children, the husband of the eldest daughter, Jonathan Dwinel, the third daughter, Rachel, who had married Jonas Carter the previous November, the second daughter, Abiah Wadsworth, the widow, Huldah Butterfield, and her second husband, Thomas Butterfield.4

(Boarder) Census US 19203 January 1920Gustav was enumerated as a boarder on the 1920 census taken on 3 January 1920 in the household of Elizabeth and Alfred Ward at 3121 Meyer Avenue, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Alfred was 31 years of age, a naturalized citizen of the United States, and worked for wages as a roofer in the Building Trade. Elizabeth was 29 years of age. They rented their home, and their two sons were enumerated with them in 1920. William and Elmer, ages 9 and 6 years, respectively, had both attended school within the census year. A boarder, Gustav Wagenhoffer, was also enumerated with the Ward family in 1920. He was 29 years of age, had been born in Bohemia, had immigrated to the United States in 1910, and had submitted his papers for citizenship. He was able to read and write, and to speak English, and worked for wages as a driver in the Trucking Industry.4

However, both boys reported being unemployed, and not working at the time the census was taken. A lodger, Viola Bigam was also enumerated in the Wagenhoffer household in 1930. She was 39 years of age, had been born in Ohio, was married, had been 19 years old at her first marriage, and worked for wages as a clerk in a store.8 
Draft Registration*26 April 1942Gustav Wagenhoffer completed his World War II Draft Registration Card on 26 April 1942 in Parma, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. His name was spelled "Gustave" on the card, and his home address was reported as Ridge Road, North Royalton, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was 52 years of age and was employed by the National Paper and Twine Company, 654 Broadway, Cleveland. He named the person who would always know his address as his stepson, Elmer Ward, whose address was 4100 Fulton Road, Cleveland.2

Margaret's son Frank S. was 38 years of age and worked in a bakery; his wife Loris was 30 years of age; their daughter Gertrude was 8 months old; and Margaret's adopted son, Charles A. Crozer, was 12 years old and had attended school within the census year.6

Crozer, at 1103 Cypress Avenue, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. She was 79 years of age and a widow. Charles was 22 years of age, single and worked as an appraiser for a bank. They rented their home for $25 a month, and owned a radio set.7 
Census US 1940*6 April 1940Her son, Frank S. Crozer, was enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 6 April 1940 as head of the household he and his mother shared in an apartment complex at 282 South Union Place, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. Frank was recorded as married, 64 years of age and no longer working. His mother, Margaret, was a widow, and 90 years of age. They rented their apartment for $30 per month, and each had completed their respective educations through the 4th year of high school.8
