Biographical Info* | | Margaret's husband was an important man with a distinguished career. In 1714, he became a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and was in that same year elected its first sergeant. He was elected constable of Boston in 1717, but refused to serve and was excused by the justices. He was an overseer of the poor in 1720 and 1721, and was appointed a justice of the peace for Suffolk County in 1723/24, for Middlesex County in 1725, and reappointed for Suffolk County in 1731. He was one of His Majesty's councilors from 1730 to 1733. He was a man of large wealth and influence, gave liberally to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Indians, and founded the Alford Professorship of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Policy at Harvard University.
The town of Alford, Berkshire County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), was named for Madam Margaret (Savage) Alford of Charlestown, in honor of his work in preaching Christianity to Native Americans, and for sponsoring a theology professorship at Harvard College's Divinity school.3,2,4 |
