This indenture made and entered this 2nd day of August 1831 by and between Jesse Bewley and Mary, his wife, of the County of Barren and State of Kentucky of the one part and Elisha Carver of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Jesse Bewley and Mary his wife for and in consideration of the sum of $100 to them in hand paid by the said Elisha Carver at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge, have bargained, granted, sold and conveyed, and do by these presents bargain, grant, sell and convey unto the said Elisha Carver one certain tract or parcel of land lying on Peters Creek in the County and State aforesaid, being the land whereon said Carver now resides and bounded as follows, viz:

Beginning at a beech and sugar tree on the South bank of said Creek, thence due S 74 poles to a beech and elm in the old line with the same, S 78½ E 25 poles crossing a branch to a hickory, N 66½ E 45 poles to a beech, N 27¼ W 44 poles to a beech at a small spring, N37 W43 poles to a sugar tree and the bank of the creek down the same with the meanders 17 poles to the Beginning, containing 23 acres more or less, to have and to hold the said land aforesaid with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging, and the said Jesse Bewley and Mary his wife to covenant and agree that they will for themselves and their heirs forever warrant and defend the said land and premises in fee simple unto the said Elisha Carver, his heirs and assigns. The signatures of both Jesse and Mary Bewley were sealed in the presence of Asa Young and James Frazier, who signed their names as witnesses. The deed was recorded in Barren County, Kentucky on 1 August 1832.3

Jesse was 67 years of age and a farmer with real estate valued at $100, and Mary was 70 years of age and recorded as unable to read or write. The couple's sons, Thomas Bewley, Jesse Bewley Jr. and Nathan Bewley, were all enumerated in 1850 with their wives and children, in their own households, on either side of their parents. The four households of the extended Bewley family were clustered together and spanned two consecutive census pages.2

Census US 1940*12 April 1940G. G. Huddleston was enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 12 April 1940 at the Terrell State Hospital, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. The hospital, previously named "North Texas Hospital for the Insane", was renamed "Terrell State Hospital" in 1925. The hospital was established for the treatment and care of the "chronic incurable insane" whose care had previously been supplied by county jails or poor houses. Gilmer was an inmate, 40 years of age and married. He had completed his education through the 7th grade of elementary school, and his residence in 1935 was not known. He was able to work for pay at the institution and had worked for 3 hours the week prior to the census. His wife, Lillian, and their son, Jesse, had lived in rural Dallas, Texas in 1935 and were enumerated in Los Angeles, California, in 1940.4
