Civil War (U.S.)*He enlisted in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War and served as a Private in Company K of the 33rd New York Infantry Regiment.1

Illness*The Van Wert Times of 20 March 1891 published an account of the weakened health and war injuries Barney had suffered from for many years, and we thank his Find a Grave memorial page for including the information, which they tell us has been edited, and which we share, "He was physically weak and afflicted, being unable to work hard, and yet he was disposed to be industrious. He was always quiet and inoffensive. His health had been undermined while in the service and he had also received a number of wounds. The government denied him a pension because of a lack of proof, there being none of his company nearby to furnish him aid in support of his claim. The poor man was assisted by the Van Wert county soldiers' relief commission for whatever amount it was empowered to bestow."1
Burial*He was buried in Section 53, Row 13, of Woodland Union Cemetery, Van Wert, Van Wert County.1
