She was recorded as their daughter, was 13 years old, a student at the community school, and had attended school within the census year. Everyone in the household was able to read, write and to speak English.7

He was a widower, 36 years of age, and was working as a saloon keeper. His children were not with him in 1900, and Samson was the only member of his household. His daughter, Florence Miller, who was 3 years old in 1900, was enumerated as a niece in the household of Samson's brother, Milton Miller. Two of Samson's sons, Floyd Miller and Clarence Miller, were enumerated in 1900 with their paternal grandparents, Susannah and David B. Miller, and we've not been able to identify where Samson's other two sons, Elmer and Virgil, were on the 1900 census.8 
Marriage*16 July 1901He married, as his second wife, Nancy Heaton, daughter of James Andrew Heaton and Elizabeth L. Berry, on 16 July 1901 in Elkhart County, Indiana. Samson was a widower with four children between the ages of 4 and 10.1,9,10 
Census US 1910*6 May 1910Nancy and Samson Miller were enumerated on the 1910 census taken on 6 May 1910 in Union, Elkhart County, Indiana. Samson was 46 years of age and a farmer working on his own account, and Nancy was 29 years of age. They rented their farm, had been married for 9 years and Nancy had given birth to five children, all of whom were living. Eight children were enumerated with the couple in 1910. Samson's three sons from his first marriage, Floyd, Elmer and Clarence, were ages 19, 16 and 15 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year. The three eldest of the couple's children, Virgil, Mabel and Charles, were ages 10, 7 and 6 years, respectively, and had all attended school within the census year. The couple's two youngest children, Lillie and Bernice, were ages 4 and 2 years, respectively. Samson's sister, Amanda Saunders, and his parents, Susan and David B. Miller, were also enumerated with the family in 1910. Amanda was 34 years of age and recorded as a widow, although her former husband was still living in 1910. She had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. David B. Miller was 71 years of age and no longer working, and Susan Miller was 72 years of age. They had been married for 50 years, and Susan had given birth to nine children, eight of whom were living. English was spoken by everyone in the family, and everyone over the age of 7 years was able to read and write. We note that Florence Miller, Samson's daughter from his first marriage, was again enumerated in the household of her uncle, Milton S. Miller, who was Samson's brother. Florence was recorded, not as Milton's niece in 1910, but as his daughter, and was 13 years old.11,12

Richard was 36 years of age and a farmer, and Susan was 33 years of age. They owned their farm free of mortgage, had been married for 16 years, and Susan had given birth to six children, all of whom were living and enumerated with their parents in 1900. Sheridan W., Ida M. and Ivy E. were ages 15, 10 and 8 years, respectively, and all had attended school within the census year. Twins Rosa and Cora were 5 years old and Otto was age 3. A nephew, George E. Boone, was also enumerated with the Cutlip family in 1900. He was the son of Richard's deceased sister, Eliza, and her husband, John Allen Boone. George was 2 years old, and his father and siblings were enumerated nearby, also in Birch Braxton County. Richard's mother, Elizabeth (Rose) Cutlip, was also with her son's family in 1900. She was 75 years of age, a widow, and had given birth to eleven children, nine of whom were living. Richard and Susan, as well as Richard's mother and the couple's three eldest children, were able to read, write and speak English.4

All of the records we've found for him report that his father was Samson Miller, although some report his mother was Samson's first wife, Mary Ann (Werner) Miller, who died in 1897, two years before Virgil was born. Samson married, as his second wife, Nancy Heaton, in 1901 and in other records, Nancy was reported as Virgil's mother. Bottom-line, while we're sure that Mary Ann was not Virgil's mother, we're not absolutely sure that Nancy was. Nevertheless, our decision for this project, was to present Nancy, who raised him, as his mother.1,3,4

An application for temporary custody and support money was submitted and, by agreement, the temporary custody of the three (two) older children was given to Chester, and the youngest child was placed in the custody of her mother. Chester was ordered to pay to the Court Clerk $2.50 per week for support beginning July 6, 1937 and $25, on or before 140 days, for the use of Zelma to pay her attorney. We were unable to find any further report of their actual divorce until late September of 1939.11 
Divorce Granted*September 1939Chester Sailors was granted a divorce from Zelma in late September 1939 in Grant County, Indiana. A local newspaper reported that the court found for Chester, the plaintiff, against Zelma, the defendant, in that the allegations of the complaint were true and that Chester was entitled to a judgement and decree of divorce. The care and custody of the couple's two daughters, Faye Sailors, age 8, and Joyce Ann Sailors, age 3, was awarded to Zelma, while we learned from the 1940 census that their sons, Robert and Donald, remained with Chester, their father. The court order of support was continued, and costs were ruled against the defendant.12 
Marriage*September 1939She married second, as his second wife, John M. Gerling, son of Peter John Gerling Sr. and Elizabeth Seibel, shortly after her divorce from her first husband was final in late September 1939.13,12 
(Married Daughter) Census US 194021 May 1940Zelma Gerling was enumerated with her two daughters from her first marriage on the 1940 census taken on 21 May 1940 in the household of her parents at 1531 South Florence Street, Marion, Grant County, Indiana. She was 30 years of age, had completed her education through the 8th grade of Elementary School, and helped with the home housework. She was eight months pregnant with her first child with her second husband, John Martin Gerling, who was not with her. John was enumerated in 1940 in the household of his cousin, Adam Gerling, in California. Zelma's two daughters, Delene Faye Sailors and Joyce Ann Sailors, were enumerated with their mother and recorded with their stepfather's surname, "Gerling." Delene F. was 8 years old and had completed her education through the 1st grade of Elementary School; and Joyce Ann was 3 years old. Zelma and Delene had lived in the same place, although not in the same house on April 1, 1935. Zelma's former husband, Chester Earl Sailors, who also lived in Marion, was enumerated in 1940 with Zelma's two sons, Robert Saylors and Donald Saylors.14
