Roy was 34 years of age and worked "on his own account" as an engineer in an auto shop, and Hazel was 32 years of age. They lived in a house they rented, had been married for two years and lived with their daughter, Mary Lou, who was 4 months old. Also residing with the family was Hazel's mother, Louisa A. Conger, age 68, who worked as a librarian in a library.6 
Relocation*1917Roy and Hazel moved with their daughter in 1917 to homestead in Powder River County, Montana.7 
OccupationRoy Heaton was not very well and needed an outdoor life. He was a mechanical engineer and, according to his daughter, a genius with machinery. His skill took him all over Powder River County as well as into neighboring Custer and Rosebud counties. He was called on to work with automobiles and other engines, which in those days were giving owners more accustomed to horses and cattle, trouble they could not fix themselves.7 
Residence*1919In the summer of 1919, a fire destroyed the Heaton's house on their homestead ranch in Powder River County and their 10-year-old daughter, Mary Lou, was sent to live for a few months with her aunt and uncle, A. D. and Elizabeth (Conger) Heaton, in Dickinson, North Dakota.7

The family sailed aboard the ship Griffin, leaving England on 01 August 1634 and arriving in Boston on 18 September 1634 with about one hundred passengers and livestock.3,4,1 
Land Records*25 August 1649A "Samuel Eaton" witnessed a release by Thomas Pell on 25 August 1649 in Boston. Given the fact that Samuel's first stepfather was Joseph Pell, and that there were no other Eaton / Heaton families in Boston at the time, it is possible that the witness was Nathaniel Heaton's eldest son. If so, he would have been alive in Aug 1649. He was not found to appear in the records again, however.5 
Death*before 1660Samuel probably died in Boston before 1660 when his father's estate was probated and his brother Jabez was treated as the eldest son. In 1660, he would have been only 29 years of age.5,6

Research Notes*Why wouldn't Samuel's son, Isaac Heaton, have known the name of his mother? This worrisome question puzzled me as a child and, as we began our Heaton family research project, we still had no answer. A handwritten pedigree chart, with names and dates of our Heaton family descending from our immigrant Nathaniel Heaton, had been prepared for distribution within the family in 1941 by Roy Henry Heaton in Montana, a 2nd great-grandson of Isaac Heaton, and a 5th great-grandson of the immigrant Nathaniel Heaton. It had been our understanding, when we received a copy of the handwritten chart in the late 1960s, that the information had been culled and copied from notes made by Isaac Heaton, himself, from information that had been kept by his ancestors and expanded upon by later generations. The handwritten chart incorrectly recorded a duplicate entry, and generation, for Isaac's father, Samuel Heaton, son of Nathaniel and grandson of the immigrant Nathaniel, with Samuel's wife recorded as "Susanna Howe". The second entry for Isaac's father, Samuel Heaton, identified him as Samuel Jr., son of Samuel, grandson of Nathaniel and great-grandson of the immigrant Nathaniel, with Samuel's wife recorded as "Sarah Hancock".

A second, typewritten expansion of the handwritten chart, was prepared in 1944, again by Roy Henry Heaton, and included additional information obtained from various Heaton family members. Roy sent the original copy of his expanded document to his 1st cousin, Arthur Duane Heaton, in North Dakota who sent it to his son in California to have it typed by the secretaries in his son's office. The finished, typed copy, as distributed to members of the Heaton family, contained the same incorrect extra generation, and the confusion with Samuel identified twice, first in the Third Generation with wife "Susannah Howe" and then in the Fourth Generation as Samuel Jr. with wife "Sarah Hancock." The typewritten, and expanded, version also included the surprising and new information that Sarah Hancock was "probably an aunt of John Hancock". (These family stories take on a life of their own, don't they?)

Our path to learning about Isaac's mother turned out to take a surprising turn. Her name was the easy part. She was Sarah Hawes, and she doesn't really qualify as a "Brick Wall" because she was not at all difficult to identify. It's the other things we learned about her along the way that make us wonder now. What's the rest of her story? Why was she ignored, or forgotten, or misremembered by her Heaton family? We're hoping that somewhere, someone can share the answers to these questions.6,2,7,8,9

Freeman*1708According to town records, Samuel was declared a Freeman in 1708 and was given a small parcel of land in Wrentham.3,16 
Land Records*24 March 1718 On 24 March 1718 Samuel Heaton, spelled "Heeten", of Wrentham in the County of Suffolk within the Province of the Massachusetts Bay purchased 26 acres on the west side of North Pond in Hebron, Hartford County, Connecticut, from Benoni Trumbell.17 
Relocationbetween 1734 and 1736 Sometime between 1734 and 1736, the three oldest of Sarah and Samuel Heaton's sons, Samuel, Jabesh and Daniel, left Connecticut and moved to an area on the Black River near Mount Olive, Morris County, New Jersey, with plans to establish an iron works. How long they operated, or how successfully, is not known, however the mountain range there was rich in iron for many years. It is believed by many descendants of this Heaton family that the boys' father, Samuel Heaton, journeyed with them from Connecticut, and assisted them in setting up their business in New Jersey. If the elder Samuel was with them initially, he also returned, before the spring of 1736, to his wife and younger children in Connecticut. His sons, though, remained in New Jersey, operating their business until they eventually ran out of trees for charcoal.18,19,3,20 
Land Records*27 April 1736Samuel Heaton, spelled "Heton", of Hebron sold "a certaine persell of bog meadow lying in Hebron" to Joseph Phelps on 27 April 1736.17 
Land Records*27 February 1737/38 On 27 February 1737/38 Samuel Heaton and his wife Sarah sold their land bordering on North Pond in Hebron to Godfree Tarbox.17 
Relocation*Following the sale of their Connecticut property in 1738, the movements and residences of Sarah and Samuel Heaton become unclear. In Sarah's father's probate agreement dated 11 February 1742, Samuel and Sarah are identified as residents of Hebron, Windham County, Connecticut and on that same date, in the same document, Samuel is identified also as of the Black River area of New Jersey. We suspect that, at the time, Samuel was in New Jersey with the couple's three oldest sons, and may have been preparing to move there permanently with the rest of his family.21 
(2nd Son-in-Law) Probate Agreement11 February 1741/42Samuel's brother James Heaton, representing his brother Samuel Heaton and Samuel's wife Sarah (Hawes) Heaton, participated in the discussion on 11 February 1741/42 to prepare and finalize an agreement between the heirs and assigns of John Hawes, late of Dedham, Suffolk County, Massachusetts Bay Province (New England), yeoman, deceased. The probate document identified each of the parties to the agreement, and their relationships to the deceased, as:

James Heaton of Rutland in the County of Worcester, yeoman, on behalf of himself and on behalf of his wife Eliony (Hawes) Heaton, one of the children and co-heirs of the estate of the deceased John Hawes.

James Heaton, again, on behalf of his brother Samuel Heaton of Hebron, in the County of Windham in the Colony of Connecticut, yeoman, and his wife Sarah (Hawes) Heaton, one of the children and co-heirs of the estate of John Hawes. James identified Samuel Heaton further by adding "alias Samuel Heaton, his brother, of Black River in the Jerseys in America, yeoman, and Sarah his wife, one of the children and co-heirs of the estate of John Hawes deceased."

Joseph Pratt of Dedham, yeoman, on behalf of himself and his wife Lydia (Hawes) Pratt, one of the children and co-heirs of the deceased John Hawes.

Ebenezer Ellis of Dedham, a wheelwright, on his own behalf and also on behalf of Samuel Everett. Samuel Everett was an heir of the deceased John Hawes as the son and only child of Mary (Hawes) Everett, late of Dedham, deceased, who had been the eldest daughter of the deceased John Hawes. Samuel Everett had assigned his share to Ebenezer Ellis

Hannah Hawes of Dedham, spinster, one of the children and co-heirs of the deceased John Hawes, on her own behalf.

Elizabeth Hawes of Dedham, spinster, one of the children and co-heirs of the deceased John Hawes, on her own behalf.

Grandson John Hawes on behalf of himself and his brothers and sisters. They were all identified as the children of John Hawes of Dedham, deceased, who had been a son of the deceased John Hawes. The other grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, were not named.

Daughter-in-Law Elizabeth (Warren) Hawes, widow of Samuel Hawes, late of Dedham, husbandman, deceased, on behalf of herself and her children. Her husband, the children's father, had been a son of the deceased John Hawes.

The agreement was signed by James Heaton, Joseph Pratt, Ebenezer Ellis, Hannah Hawes, Elizabeth Hawes, John Hawes and Elizabeth (Warren) Hawes. On 10 March 1741/42 in Boston, Joseph Pratt, Ebenezer Ellis, Hannah Hawes, Elizabeth Hawes and John Hawes acknowledged the instrument to be their voluntary act, and on 31 July 1742 in Boston, James Heaton and Elizabeth (Warren) Hawes made their acknowledgements.21 
(2nd Son-in-Law) Estate and Land11 February 1742Under the 11 February 1742 agreement, Samuel Heaton and his wife Sarah (Hawes) Heaton received £34 15s in moveables as their full share in the estate. Additionally, they, and each of the other heirs, received a one-seventh part of 14 acres on Hawes Hill.

The agreement then outlined how each of the seven parts of the 14 acres on Hawes Hill was to be divided. Joseph and Lydia (Hawes) Pratt had the first lot, adjoining his meadow; James and Eliony (Hawes) Heaton received the second lot; Samuel and Sarah (Hawes) Heaton received the third lot; Hannah Hawes, the fourth and Elizabeth Hawes, the fifth; grandson John Hawes, the sixth lot; and Ebenezer Ellis, the seventh lot adjoining Old Field. The lots were to be southeasterly and northwesterly and to be of unequal breadth at the southeasterly end, and also have convenient cart paths leading from the brook, to and over each of the lots.21 
DesertionNovember 1743According to divorce documents filed four years later, Samuel's wife Sarah left her husband in Connecticut in November 1743 with plans to relocate to the Black River area of Morris County, New Jersey. The documents stated she had no plans to return to Connecticut, or to her husband. The couple had been married 37 years and had 9 children, ranging in age from 36 to 12 years. The couple's movements are, again, unclear. It is not known if Sarah ever reached New Jersey or where Samuel or their children were living in 1743.22,17 
Relocation*1744Samuel moved permanently, with his additional unmarried children, Hannah, John, James and Isaac, to Morris County, New Jersey, possibly as early as 1744, although he didn't file for divorce in Connecticut until September 1747. In his divorce documents he gave his address as Lebanon, Connecticut, and it is possible he was there only temporarily visiting at the home of his daughter Sarah and her husband John Porter.3,23,20 
Divorce Filing*14 September 1747 On 14 September 1747 Samuel Heaton of Lebanon, Windham County, Connecticut, petitioned the Superior Court to grant him a bill of divorce from his wife Sarah (Hawes) Heaton. The evidence submitted to the court included a transcript, prepared on 2 April 1747, of their Dedham marriage record. Samuel's petition stated that he was married to one Sarah Hawes on 10 December 1706, and lived with her and did all the duties of a loving, kind and faithful husband to her until sometime in the month of November 1743, at which time she departed from him to some parts of the Jersey with a design never to return and live with him again and that, without any just cause given her by the petitioner, she did then and has ever since deserted him and has not since performed any one of the duties of a wife to him and hath broken her marriage covenant, for a time period of more than three years. The confirmatory testimony of Joseph Phelps, written at Hebron in September of 1748 reported that Sarah Heaton, wife to Samuel Heaton of Lebanon in the County of Windham did some time in the month of November in the year 1743 set out to go to a place called Black River "beyond York Government", as he understood, with a load of goods on her horse, and had not heard that she had returned home to her husband, and had often heard that she had not.24,22,17 
Death*circa 1756The date and place of Samuel's death is not known, although the year may have been circa 1756. The Hawes source, noting that some of the information used had been obtained from a third source, stated that Samuel died in Flanders (Roxbury), New Jersey about 1756 and that Sarah died there also about 1769. All of the Heaton sources reported that Samuel died in New Jersey between 1732 and 1737. He was definitely still alive, and living in Connecticut, when he divorced his wife Sarah in 1747. He was called of both Hebron, Connecticut and the Black River area of New Jersey in 1742 when he and Sarah were parties in the agreement to settle and divide the estate of his father-in-law John Hawes. The "Sarah Heaton, wife of John Porter" source stated that no probate record has been found in either Connecticut or New Jersey relating to Samuel Heaton or his wife Sarah (Hawes) Heaton. There is so much conflicting information regarding this couple that one wonders if it might not be deliberate. The Heaton family, in the stories I grew up with, always married happily and never, ever divorced. Maybe the confusion was a concerted effort to hide unpleasant facts from inquiring descendants.25,17,26,27,2

Marriage*1740The identity of Samuel's first wife is not known. They probably married in New Jersey about 1740.2,3 
Marriage*He married second Abigail Tuttle, daughter of Ephraim Tuttle and Sarah Colver.2 
Children* It is not clear if Samuel had any children with his first wife, and all of Samuel's ten children appear to have considered Abigail their mother. We believe that Gideon was Samuel's first child and are thoroughly confused and uncertain about the birth order of the others. For the purpose of this project, we have assigned all of the ten children to Abigail -- until we learn otherwise.9 
Religion*Samuel had been raised a Presbyterian, and wanted a Presbyterian minister to christen his son. His wife, however, objected, saying, "If you show me a text that warrants christening a child, I will take him to the minister." Samuel quoted several, but his wife was not satisfied. Samuel then went to the minister, sure that infant baptism must be in the Bible. The minister acknowledged that there was no text that directly proved the point, but that it was probable by deduction from many texts. Samuel was shocked by this information, and went home to "search the Scriptures," the end result being that he became a Baptist.

He went to Kingwood, about 40 miles away and seeming three or four times farther considering the roads and route. He was baptized there, and joined the Kingwood Baptist Church. Returning home, Samuel began to preach. Converts were made who went to Kingwood and were baptized into that church, and that was the beginning of what became "Schooley's Mountain Baptist Church". in Mount Olive, Morris County.10 
(Son) DesertionNovember 1743Samuel was age 32 and living in New Jersey when his father was deserted by his mother in November 1743. His father filed for divorce four years later in Connecticut on 14 September 1747. According to the divorce documents, Sarah (Hawes) Heaton left with a load of goods on her horse with plans never to return to Connecticut, or to her husband, and headed for the Black River area of New Jersey where the three oldest of her sons were already living. It is not known if she ever reached New Jersey.11,5 
Religion1751Samuel was ordained at Mount Olive in 1751 and went the next year to Mill Creek in Virginia where he remained for a short time. He went next to Konoloway in Cumberland, Pennsylvania where he founded another church in 1751 and went the following year to Mount Olive where he remained a short time.10,12,13,14 
Religion1756 He was driven from Konoloway by Indians, and went next to Cape May, Cape May County, New Jersey, where he was pastor from 1756 to 1760. In 1761, he founded his third church at Dividing Creek in Cumberland County, New Jersey where he served as pastor until his death.15,16 
(Husband) Death10 August 1777Samuel became a widower when Abigail (Tuttle) Heaton died on 10 August 1777.17 
Will*16 September 1777He wrote his will on 16 September 1777 in Downe Township, Cumberland County, just a month after his wife's death. He named his children, Ephraim, Levi, Sally, Abigail, Gideon, Thomas and Eliona, and grandchildren, Levi and Samuel.18 
Death*26 September 1777He died on 26 September 1777 at Dividing Creek, Downe Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey, at age 65.13,3,2

Samuel's mother Nancy Heaton was enumerated as the head of her own household immediately preceding Samuel's on the same census page, and the household of his brother John Gordon and his wife Sarah P. (Funk) Campbell Gordon, Maggie's mother, was enumerated immediately preceding his mother's.10 
Census US 1900*6 June 1900Maggie and Samuel W. Heaton were enumerated on the 1900 census taken on 6 June 1900 in Lynnville, Morgan County, Illinois. Samuel was 54 years of age and a farmer, and Maggie was 50. They had been married for 30 years and Maggie had given birth to 12 children, 7 of whom were living. Enumerated in their parents' household in 1900 were Roy E. who was 21, and Berry S. who was 16. Both sons worked as farm laborers. The couple's daughter, Beatrice Coultas, and son, John G. Heaton, were enumerated in their own households on the same census page.11 
Death*28 March 1912He died on 28 March 1912 in Morgan County at age 66. He was returning home from Lynnville, and just outside the town suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He fell out of his wagon and was found along the side of the road sometime later.12 
Burial*He was buried in Diamond Grove Cemetery, Jacksonville, Morgan County.9

(Daughter) DesertionNovember 1743Sarah was age 36 and long married when her father was deserted by her mother in November 1743. He filed for divorce four years later in Connecticut on 14 September 1747. According to the divorce documents, Sarah (Hawes) Heaton left with a load of goods on her horse with plans never to return to Connecticut, or to her husband, and headed for the Black River area of New Jersey where the three oldest of her sons were already living. It is not known if she ever reached New Jersey.11,6 
(Eldest Daughter) Relocation1744Sarah's father moved permanently, with his additional unmarried children, Hannah, John, James and Isaac, to Morris County, New Jersey, possibly as early as 1744. In his divorce documents dated 14 September 1747, he gave his address as Lebanon, Connecticut, possibly visiting there at the home of his daughter Sarah and her husband John Porter.2,12,13

Their now extended family, with Sarah and her husband Nicholas and others, left Virginia in 1785, and moved west to Pennsylvania where two of the Heaton brothers, John and Henry, had already settled. They established their new home in that part of Washington County, Pennsylvania, which would become Greene County in 1796.2 
Census US 1800*1800Sarah was likely enumerated on the 1800 census in the household of her husband Nicholas Wathen in Morgan, Greene County, Pennsylvania. A total of 10 people made up the Wathen household in 1800. Nicholas and Sarah would have been the two people, 1 male and 1 female, between the ages of 26 thru 44, and the other 8 members of their household were all under the age of 16 identified as 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 3 females under 10 and 3 females 10 thru 15.9 
Census US 1810*1810Sarah was likely enumerated on the 1810 census in the household of her husband Nicholas Wathen in Morgan, Greene County, Pennsylvania. A total of 10 people made up the Wathen household in 1810. Nicholas and Sarah would have been the two people, 1 male and 1 female, over the age of 45, and the other 8 members of their household were identified as 2 males ages 10 thru 15, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10 thru 15 and 3 females 16 thru 25.10
