Henry was 61 years of age, a farmer and owned a grist mill. He had real estate valued at $20,625 and a personal estate of $1,937. Rachel was 55 and keeping house. A large number of their extended family lived in their household in 1870 including: their orphaned Beeson grandchildren from their daughter's first marriage, Fremont and Malinda Beeson, ages 13 and 9, respectively, their deceased daughter's second husband, George Wesley Baker, who was 32, a farmer with real estate valued at $2,500 and a personal estate of $1,700, and their deceased daughter's son Frederick Baker, age 5, and Rachel's brother Henry's children, Joseph and Rachael Willis, ages 14 and 12 respectively. Also enumerated in the household were two mill workers, George Johnson, age 27, and Henry Muntz, age 30.5

Wiseman in Center, Knox County, Missouri. We've not yet been able to determine the relationship between Ellen's deceased husband, Emery Wiseman, and Thomas J. Wiseman, although we feel certain one existed. The widow Ellen was 26 years of age and her children, Elizabeth A. Wiseman and Emery Wiseman, were 2 years old and four months old, respectively.4

They were both 38 years of age and James was a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and a personal estate valued at $500. They were enumerated with nine children. William, Elizabeth, David and Jasper Finley, from James's first marriage, were ages 17, 15, 12 and 9 years, respectively, and the three boys had attended school within the census year; Elizabeth and Emery Wiseman, from Ellen's first marriage, were ages 11 and 10 years, respectively, and both had attended school within the census year; and John, Andrew and James Finley, from the couple's marriage, were ages 4 years, 2 years, and three months old, respectively.1 
Census US 1870*1 July 1870Ellen and James Finley were enumerated on the 1870 census taken on 1 July 1870 near the Colony Post Office, Benton, Knox County, Missouri. They were both 49 years of age and James was a farmer with real estate valued at $4,000 and a personal estate valued at $4,400. Ellen was keeping house. Seven of their children were enumerated with them in 1870. Elizabeth Finley was 24 years of age and at home, and Jasper Finley was 19 years old, worked as a laborer on the family farm and had attended school within the census year. Elizabeth Wiseman was 21 years of age and at home, and Emery Wiseman was 20 years old, worked as a laborer on the family farm and had attended school within the census year. John, Andrew and James Finley were ages 14, 12 and 10 years, respectively, worked as laborers on the family farm and had all attended school within the census year. James's oldest son, William, had passed away in 1865, and his married son, David Finley, was enumerated with his wife in the next household on the same census page as the rest of the family.6 
(Mother) Marriage1 September 1878The marriage ceremony between her daughter, Elizabeth A. Wiseman, and Stephen Powers was held on 1 September 1878 in Knox County, Missouri, at the home of Ellen and her husband, James Finley, who had raised Elizabeth since she was four years old. The couple's son, Andrew Finley, who was two weeks short of becoming 21 years of age, signed as a witness to the marriage.7,8
