He agonized for a few months over choosing between becoming a minister or a merchant as his career, and then became a merchant. His marriage to Hannah Hull, whose father was Mintmaster of Massachusetts Bay, greatly increased his opportunities for success in the business world. During the next fifty-four years, Sewall was awarded some of the colony's highest offices, culminating in his appointment as Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Judicature in 1718.1
