They rented their farm, two of John's three children from his first marriage were enumerated with them in 1920, and the family's surname was spelled "Jaurden" by the census taker. Bessie M. was 5 years old and "Jessie S." was recorded as a son and 3 years and 10 months of age. The entry for this child is confusing to us because John's first three children were Bessie M., William S. and Jessie M. Bessie's age was correct; she would have been 5 years old. William S., not "Jessie" S., would have been almost 4 years old; and Jessie "M." would have been about two years old. It's possible the census taker recorded the two younger children in his notes when he visited the home and then later, unintentionally, merged the two children together when he completed his report at home.2

John was 47 years of age, worked as a farmer on his own account, and was an employer. Gertie was 28 years of age. John reported being age 27 at his first marriage to Clara Cash, and Gertie was recorded as age 20 at her first marriage, which was to John. They rented their farm, did not own a radio set, and five children were enumerated with them in 1930. John's two daughters from his first marriage, Bessie and Jessie, were ages 16 and 14, respectively; John and Gertie's two sons, Frank and Arthur, were ages 7 and almost 5 years. None of the children had attended school within the census year, and Bessie and Jessie could both read and write.5 
Census US 1940*3 May 1940Gertie A. and John B. Jordan were enumerated on the 1940 census taken on 3 May 1940 in Glaize, Jackson County, Arkansas. John was 56 years of age, worked as a laborer making railroad ties, and had completed his education through the 3rd grade of elementary school. He had worked 30 weeks in 1939 for his income of $180, had worked 28 hours the week prior to the census, and had no other sources of income. Gertie was 38 years of age, did her housework at home, and had completed her education through the 4th grade of elementary school. They rented their house for $2 per month, and in 1935 the family had lived in rural Arkansas. Their three youngest children, all boys, were enumerated with them in 1940. Frank was 17 years old, had completed his education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had not attended school within the census year. He worked as a laborer making railroad ties, had worked 16 weeks in 1939 for an income of $100, had worked 26 hours the week prior to the census, and had no other sources of income. His brother Arthur was 14 years old, had completed his education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year. Young Homer was 5 years old and had not yet attended school.6

The couple's four children were enumerated with them in 1940. Their daughter, Jessie was 26 years of age and had initially been recorded as married. The M was crossed out, and she was enumerated with her maiden name. As we had already learned from her former husband, Charles William Meade's, second marriage, he and Jessie were divorced. Jessie had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school. She worked as a waitress in a restaurant and had earned $12 in 1939. Her brother, Jack, was 20 years old, had completed his education through the 1st year of high school, and worked as a glove cutter in a glove factory. He had worked 26 weeks in 1939, earned $286, and worked 40 hours the week before the census was taken. His sister, Margie, was 15 years old, had completed her education through the 6th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year; and Ida was 12 years old, had completed her education through the 4th grade of elementary school, and had attended school within the census year.4

(Applicant) Religion29 March 1805Zilpah Bolton and Nathaniel Everett, along with eight others which included George Briggs Cox, Peter Vallett, John Woodward, Lydia Sweetser, Sally Lovis, Mary Marnson, Ruth Thayer and Venus Sylvester, applied for membership in the Second Baptist Church, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, at a Friday evening meeting on 29 March 1805. The applicants spoke "with regard to works of grace upon their souls and after a candid and full examination, they were unanimously received into the fellowship as Candidates for baptism."2

Also enumerated with the family in 1940 was Cail's father, Harry Friel, who was 49 years of age and had completed his education through the third year of High School. He was unable to work and was recorded as married, although his wife, Cail's mother, Marie, was enumerated on 17 April 1940 with the man who would become second husband, Joseph Kieffer Stouffer, in National City, San Diego County, California. Everyone in the Friel household in Philadelphia had lived in the same house in Philadelphia on 1 April 1935.2

Harriet's mother, Sophia (Brown) Van Arnsdale, was 61 years of age and a widow. Mary J. O'Neil, whose relationship to the family has not yet been identified, had been born in New York, was 10 years old, and had attended school within the census year. Aaron Benham, who may have been a relative of Eliza Benham, the future wife of Harriet's brother John H. Van Arnsdale, had been born in Ohio and was recorded as 25 years of age. The two remaining men enumerated in the Dixon household in 1860 were working as farm laborers. James Whitaker was 16 years old and James Boggs was age 18, and both had been born in Illinois.7

McClure had been filed with the county clerk making the following disposition of the property of the estate: Usual provision for payment of funeral expenses; Bequeathing to Zephaniah W. Van Ness, a brother, $100; to her husband, J. R. McClure, $1, "one pair of feather pillows, one hand-quilted quilt, and any one article of my clothing he may see fit to select"; to her daughter, Mary Bailey, $1; to her granddaughter, Ada Van Ness, $1, her enlarged picture, a glass plate and a diamond ring; the property else is to be sold by the executor, E. D. Boyd, named in the will, and devoted to the permanent caring for the graves of the testator and her second husband, James Downing; that in the event of her decease within 100 miles of the town of Dayton, Washington, her body was to be taken there to be interred besides that of James Downing; otherwise to be interred where she died; that the proceeds arising from the sale of property were to be retained by the executor, E. D. Boyd, the interest to be used in caring for the graves as aforesaid; that no further bequests were made in the will and no further order given regarding the disposition of the money realized from the sale of property, excepting for the expense for erecting of tombstones at the graves; that the estate was estimated at $1200 in the petition for the probating of the will; that E.
